Beans on toast is grand and America is the fattest nation in the world. I know this to be true as I am an American… but the beans have to be proper English Heinz blue can beans.

I wanna talk really quickly about beans on toast, because I know Americans like to make fun of it.

The thing about beans on toast is it's a nutritionally complete meal. It gives you all your essential amino acids, naturally low in fat, great source of fibre.

When I was at uni (and we were all skint, so beans on toast was a regular meal) there was a rumour you could survive on beans on toast indefinitely. I've no idea if that's true or not.

Anyway, the point is if you're making fun of a food that is affordable and healthy, then it sort of just makes you look like the arsehole.

It's not meant to be fine dining. It's comfort food. It's last few days before pay day food. It warms you up in the winter, is cheap and easy to cook, can be made using just a microwave and a toaster if you don't have an oven or a hob.

Also, unlike a lot of "skint" food, beans on toast tastes fucking lush.

Ubiquity Press- Journals covering archaeology, comics scholarship, museum studies, psychology, history, international development, and more.  Also publishes open access ebooks on a wide variety of subjects.

Europeana-  Digital library about the history and culture of Europe.

Digital Public Library of America- American history, culture, economics, SO MUCH AMERICA.

Internet Archive- In addition to books, they have music and videos, too.  Free!  And legal!  They also have the Wayback Machine, which lets you see webpages as they looked at a particular time.

College and Research Libraries- Library science and information studies.  Because that’s what I do.

Library of Congress Digital Collections- American history and culture, historic newspapers, sound recordings, photographs, and a ton of other neat stuff.

LSE Digital Library- London history, women’s history.

Wiley Open Access- Science things!  Neurology, medicine, chemistry, ecology, engineering, food science, biology, psychology, veterinary medicine.

SpringerOpen-  Mainly STEM journals, looooong list.

Elsevier Open Access-  Elsevier’s kind of the devil but you might as well take advantage of this.  Mainly STEM, also a linguistics journal and a medical journal in Spanish.

I don’t think a lot of people really understand that ecosystems in North America were purposefully maintained and altered by Native people.

Like, we used to purposefully set fires in order to clear underbrush in forests, and to inhibit the growth of trees on the prairies. This land hasn’t existed in some primeval state for thousands of years. What Europeans saw when they came here was the result of -work-
