Remedies - Sabrina and Corina
By Kali Fajardo
As for my final project I decided to do the disappearing act , which was our first project for this class , as you can you I’ve cut out the lice from Clarisas hair while her grandma Estella uses her remedy to remove Clarisas hair. Behind of Clarisa is he grandma which she is holding the remedy in the can it says “ Fuck Lice” and at the bottom “ Consist of Female Power” which I added those for fun and also the mask she is wearing . I really enjoyed reading the story.
In the Book, Sabrina and Corina by Kali Fajardo-Anstine, one of her stories caught my attention, which is really rare since I rarely read books. Remedies was one of my favorite stories , talking about how Clarisa, a 11 year old girl was dealing with lice and how her own mother was finding remedies to remove those lice, but that’s just one of their problems Clarisa and her mom are facing, finds out that Clarisa’s father left them for good leaving her and her mother. As you read furthermore to the story you will find out that the reason for Clarisa’s lice were from her step brother Harrison who was living in a bad home and his mother who was on pills and drank all day never paid attention to Harrison. Clarisa even goes on to explaining how Harrison smelled like pee and that his clothes had holes on them. The same very reason in which Claria’s mom has to take care of Harrison , reason the lice will not leave. One part of the story, Clarisa’s grandmother Estella which she gives a flashback to when she was young and her grandmother was making cookies for Clarisa. As she was eating the cookies , Grandma Estella changed the channel on her TV, Clarisa explains how Grandma Estella likes her TV shows rich and scandalous, as they watch their show her grandma notices Clarisas hair and wants her to grow her hair grow more since it seems to attract more choices for a better Husbands and gives her her remedy for growing her hair and this is part is important at the end. As the story progresses Clarisa is having a hard time at school due to the cause of her having lice, the school had to send her home until she resolves her problem, Clarisas mom had no choice to cut all three of their hair off, but even that didn’t solve anything, until Clarisa had to call her Grandma which in the beginning her mom tells her to never call her Grandma but in this case it was a must. Soon after calling Grandma they meet over to her place to get her remedy to remove lice which I think was the most heartwarming moment. Grandma Estella gave Clarisa her own handwritten and drawn remedy of herbs and plants to anything , headaches , stomachaches, anything which was a very cool thing to do. That's why I chose this story. I really enjoyed it.

Reading and Respond #5
Kali Fajardo-Anstine’s narrative book, Sabrina & Corina with eleven short stories,as I was reading these stories ,it’s about a Indigenous Latina family living in Denver who had witness and experience violence against women, poverty, racism, and addictions of various kinds, through out the stories. This book and the stories show powerful connections with their mothers and daughters as they together face these obstacles. Also the stories talk about our homeland and the truths of events that happen. It also spreads some sense of feminine awareness on how women struggle throughout their life. Even till this day many women are struggling and this book really helps spread out that message.

With the origin of performance art being what we now know as live entertainment, I wanted to pay homage to the circus arts. The circus arts, typically wonderful spectacles, displays of strength, timing, balance, agility, flexibility, choreography, and skill. Always designed to dazzle an audience.
At what point, however, does that entertainment cease to entertain?
At what point does a persons skill move from “very bad” to “ok, not great” to “dazzling”? Is the value in the act itself or in the showmanship of it?
While the individual ends of the spectrum are clear (it is easy to differentiate “world class” from “god-awful” after all), the graduations between are less so.

Performance Art: I am not oppressed.
youtube
Following what’s going on in the world, as a Muslim, I felt obligated to talk about this and especially in the way I love most: through my work.
I am a proud Muslim. As this proud Muslim, I can tell you that my religion in no way calls for violence and murder; in fact, it calls for peace, equality and love between everyone, Muslim or not. Everything you see about Muslims is what the government and political system wants you to see...
Please, I only ask this of you. DO NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU SEE ON MEDIA! I cannot stress how important this is to me. The world is protraying Muslims as terrorists, ignorant and uneducated people, when in fact we are civilized humans just like you! This portrayal actually makes it so hard for us to fight this Islamophobia we face daily and live among everyone else. I cannot tell you how many times Muslims were beaten up, killed and harrased for being Muslims. Since when was abusing people for their religion okay?
It’s 2020 and there is a concentration camp in China, trapping millions of Muslims, brainwashing them out of Islam. FAMILIES ARE BEING TORN APART JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE MUSLIMS! They are forced to drink alcohol and eat pork (considered as sins in Islam), sleep with each other without marriage (also considered a sin) and are banned from prayer. You may not agree with our beliefs, but for sure you can agree that terrorizing people in this way just because they have different beliefs IS NOT OKAY!
My main focus was the Hijab; for those of you who don’t know, a Hijab is a veil wrapped around the woman’s head, along with dressing modestly. It is a way to show loyalty to our religion and obedience to God, similar to nuns. I have one question for you: why is it when you see a nun you have this immense respect for her, but when you see a Hijabi, you think she’s oppressed or “forced to wear it”. My mom is a Hijabi and the ammount of stares she gets when we go out is raging!
Please I do not ask of you to believe in what we believe in, but we are all entitled to believe in whatever we want and respect others who don’t as well. All I humbly ask is PLEASE do your own research; do not believe everything you see on social media!
If you’ve made it this far THANK YOU SO MUCH! I appreciate you giving time for this so so so much!

Overthinking
I really hate talking on the phone. I’m not great at communication in general, but having to make a phone call is something I especially dread. It doesn’t matter if it’s a friend, family member, work, or someone I barely know like the doctor’s office, I waste so much time agonizing about what I’ll say and how dumb I think I’ll sound. This is an abridged version of that process.
To record I couldn’t use my phone, luckily I was able to borrow a camera. The lens was too big so I wasn’t able to get quite the angle I wanted, but I don’t think it looks awful. Something else I hate is appearing on camera. I specifically chose a field where I could be behind the camera for a reason. If I could have done this project without showing my face, I would have.

Minute Video
https://vimeo.com/478122779
The insight of a minimum waged barista working a mid-shift. The constant repeated motion of making all kinds of drinks. I wanted to show how one job can create a human robot system. Where the workers know where to step, what syrups to use, and have a understanding of what type of drink is needed. Along with that, the workers know where to move when other workers come down the line without saying a word. We have developed a unique relationship to understand each others body language.
Side Note: Will say the divider that is supposed to keep us workers distant, doesn’t work and it sucks.

One Minute:
For my one minute project i felt like I should do something that i am experienced in and can accomplish under one minute. I chose to do a task at my job, Chicken-N-Spice. Being a shift manager i have many duties in the front line and the back line. This task of making our signature and famous chicken cheese fries is done in our back. I cut up the chicken into bite sized chunks and then drizzle our creamy and rich american cheese over the top of the potato wedges. Adding the 2 together topping it off with a cup of jalapeños. This was a very fun project becuase it allows the artist to create something they enjoy and something they know.

Art Project 4 - One Minute Performance
For this piece, the word performance made me a little bit nervous because my intial thought was taking a video of myself acting out some sort of scene. Although thinking on it deeper, I realized I could share a performance of something that makes me happy, and that I would feel a bit more comfortable sharing, which would be my art! Still wanting to show this art as a performance by me, I drew a small cartoonish self-portrait. Drawing is something I have always enjoyed and used as a outlet for my sadness and frustrations. Eventually allowing it to be what I want to do for the rest of my life! (Hopefully)
I hope you guys enjoy my little drawing and have a great weekend!

This is really cool , sign language is very interesting!
Art Project 4: Performance Art
youtube
I took a couple American Sign Language classes back in high school, so I decided to dedicate this project to the beauty of Sign Language. Sign Language isn’t a very common thing you see on a daily basis. Sometimes at debates or political talks or other types of performances, there is usually a person who is signing what the speaker is saying for those who are hard of hearing at the event.
American Sign Language (ASL) is a complete, natural language that has the same linguistic properties as spoken languages, with grammar that differs from English. ASL is expressed by movements of the hands and face. It is the primary language of many North Americans who are deaf and hard of hearing, and is used by many hearing people as well. I am not deaf or hard of hearing but learning this type of language back in high school was pretty cool because I got to experience what deaf people have to go. If you ever want to learn another language, I would suggest learning Sign Language because this is one that beats all others and a great learning opportunity. As the years go by, I have forgotten how to do most of the signs I learned in those classes but one that stuck around was the alphabet.
So, enjoy my one minute performance art of me signing the alphabet in Sign Language and then at the end, I spell my name.

STIMULATION
This video was meant to be aim towards the feeling of wanting constant stimulation. Recently, I’ve sometimes noticed, or felt, that I have been caught in a sort of trance of wanting consistent entertainment. Sometimes it seems like I obsessively scroll through my phone, play movies, or re-watch shows that I’ve seen too many times already; not for any reason in particular, but just because I have this urge to do so. I think this constant “need” for stimulation, and maybe even escape, is “sucking me in” and then draining me of my energy or even my life in a way.

Reading 4
Live performance must be the hardest art style anyone could do. It takes practice and lots of concentration. I really admire performers since they are not nervous to express themselves in front of many people. Each performer makes his or her own definition of performance in the very manner and process of execution, so that each work becomes an entirely unexpected combination of events. The form allows artists to make a "collage of media," and the means by which they do this are as diverse as the imaginations of the performance artists themselves. Also performers have the ability to manipulate the unlimited choice of material, much in the same way that an editor pieces together the hundreds of thousands of frames of a movie. I really learned a lot after reading these articles. Never thought performing was a way of art.

One Minute turned into Three
Waking up from a warm deep sleep, only to be kissed by the cold draft that leaked in from the window gets my heart pumping. As others around complain about the coldness, I’m quickly throwing on my favorite hoodie and walking out the door to take in a deep breath. I watch the weather app, searching for the first sign of snow. Each day I get more twitchy, waxing my board, pre checking that my gear is all in check, and waiting for the tickets to go on sale. Family and friends look at me as if I’m crazy. All that they want is the sun but as for me I welcome the cold with open arms.
