A minor complaint among some fans this season is that there were “too many Countries of the World references,” and it became tired.

I have a slightly different perspective and explanation: Yakko is just so damn attached to that song because he knows it’s made him popular! S1’s Halloween episode showed us that Yakko is terrified of not being funny or being ignored. But his “Countries” song is of meme status, and so he clings to it because he knows it makes people like him.

It’s telling that in “Yakko Amakko,” Yakko says to the animator that he bets he can make her like him—and then almost immediately starts singing a jazzed-up version of “Countries of the World”! And earlier in the Sweet 16 episode, when the Warners start being booed, Yakko awkwardly starts singing the lyrics. The song is like a security blanket for him; he wants people to like him, and he sees “Countries of the World” as his easiest, safest ticket to ensuring that happens.

But it is a tired bit. Dot and Wakko certainly think so, if their reactions in the Columbus and Oliver Twist episodes are any indication. What they don’t understand, though, is that Yakko keeps trying to sing it as a way of telling the audience, “Here! I’m doing this funny meme song! Please like me and give Animaniacs another season.”
