❛ what do you mean , a groundhog predicts the weather ? ❜ sure , he’s not been in america for that long , but he didn’t think he still had THAT much to learn about the country . he doesn’t like to judge , but if people really do let a rodent decide if it’s going to be warm sooner , mihail has some questions . ❛ how do they know it even saw its shadow ? ❜ // @brcinstcrm
benji nodded his head at the man’s questions , “ yeah , groundhog day. it should honestly be universal. little guy peeks out his head and if he gets scared winter is longer and if not --- spring comes faster. “ probably wasn’t the best way to explain it but he was trying his best. “ because it gets scared --- did you not hear what i just said ? “

for someone as smart as benji was, he could be a tad dense. maybe it was the odd nature of the relationship, they were in some sort of inbetween that either have yet to defined (and wyatt was okay with it), but benji was not reading the room. “no. i was thinking we could go somewhere more private,” she told him, wondering if she was going to have to spell it out for him. “is that okay with you?”
everything with wyatt felt new , he wasn’t opposed to it much. it’d been a month since the lockdown and he had a feeling at the question might be brought up again. he might just have to ask her this time around because he enjoyed being around her , enjoyed everything about her. it take him a little too long to figure out what the woman mean , eyes widening as he finally understood , “ oh! “ he exclaimed , prompting a quick shh from someone studying nearby. “ oh yeah , that’s totally cool with me. more than okay , let’s go . ”

“PLEASE ─ I’VE ABANDONED that New Year’s resolution. Apparently being nice to people gives them a reason to be shitty to you. Who would’ve thought?” She feigned shock as she approached the boy. Of course, there was a story behind that but she wasn’t exactly sure if it was something to be whispered about between the bookshelves. “Oh we BOTH know I could kick your ass,” she chuckled back. “How much do you even bench? Two pencils?”
“ when have i ever been shitty to you ? “ last he remembered he was helping the woman with a hand injury , a painful one if he remembered correctly. he did wonder who was being rude to the woman , but he hoped she would tell him ---- though knowing her , she would not. “ with your keyboard ? sure. “ brows rose expectantly. “ yeah , that’s acceptable for blackthorne. “

“So this is what you’ve resorted to? Disrupting a decades old system for your own personal pleasure?” Alec jabbed at his friend with another low laugh. But he knew better than to argue with Benji over issues of academia. Though Alec knew that he was smart, there was a brain and there was a brawn in their friendship. “Well if people have an easier time finding what they needed than I guess you are.”
“ did i mention my parents were activists ? they’d love it if i disrupted any type of system. they were almost disappointed i chose medicine and not something more groundbreaking. “ although benji was willing to work in poorer areas of boston and the east coast knowing there were plenty of opportunities to bring about healthcare. “ i think everyone would have their preference ---- but my way is better. “

shoulders hunch into a heap on his back , but he drops them quickly with no explanation to the library’s unsolved mysteries . there’s a beat of quietness between them which allows them time to sing their silent praises to meredith . " guess you’ll have to practice your lying , ” campbell tells benji . “ we can — help each other practice if you like . ” camp puts the book back between two others . “ it goes here , ” he says , beginning the practicing of lies . “ it goes here . if it doesn’t , it’s not my fault . it was there , when i got here . i’m just putting it back where i pulled it out from a second ago . . . ” he’s smiling , feeling a tad of heat rise in his neck in discomfort , for letting his weird out too soon , but he guessed it meant he felt comfortable around benji . he tried , verbally , to recover nonetheless : “ no habla español , ” finished the frenchman .
benji watches in amusement , the way the other seemed to channel someone else entirely , the other should definitely go into acting if spy work didn’t work out. he had the jaw for it after all. “ parents told me it was okay to lie to the man --- dunno if meredith counts as the man. “ benji never found the appeal in lying , plus it didn’t help much in the medical field. blue eyes traces over the man’s movements , too bewildered to try anything of the sort. he didn’t always used to be this clean cut , but he wasn’t twenty anymore. “ you’re a really good liar , “ he muses with a smile. he let a small chuckle escape his lips , “ maybe i’d stick to french. “

this whole situation felt surreal. she’d been trying to focus on her work, her blueprint she’s perfecting. but she couldn’t help but sneak a glance every so often, each stare lingering a little longer than the last. eventually he caught it, as it was bound to happen. and she smiled a small smile. “you wanna take a break?” she asked. something very un-wyatt like, indeed. she began to put her things away. “we should take a break.”
the inner workings of the body hadn’t really changed , but there were still things benji was learning. however , her staring was definitely not helping his train of thought. he thought maybe she was trying to let him know that she was tired , that she wanted to leave. benji would probably would stay a couple of hours more. brow rose , they’d studied before , she wasn’t one to take breaks. “ what’s wrong ? are you hungry ? your head hurt ? “ he muttered as she began to gather her things , he did the same and within second he got up , “ where are we going ? “

“i can’t say i have a strong opinion of him either way, but if you hate him, i hate him,” she tells him, with a small smile. she isn’t sure what benji’s major is exactly, but she thinks it’s something to do with medicine. and she wants to ask him questions, but she’s afraid what’s going to happen when she tells him her news. “it’s tuesday, bud,” she says, with a nod of her head. her hands are shoved into her pocket, and she rocks back and forth on her heels. “i’m– i have something to tell you, but i need you to promise me you won’t freak out.”
“ librarian from the 1800s , total nerd. “ great epitaph if he said so himself. maybe benji should quit medicine and pursue that full time , if people even still wrote epitaphs , been a while since he went to funeral --- probably not the best train of thought to have. “ tuesday , almost wednesday meaning --- almost the weekend. “ even if the weekend was literally there almost 2 days ago. he finally managed to place the abnormally large medical textbook back into the space as he turned his attention towards the woman , “ well , i mean --- when you lead with that how can i not ? but i’ll try , what’s up ? “

taking a step forward , the boy delicately lifts the book from benji . “ nah , no judgement . i could be doing it completely wrong anyway . — but i pretend i know what i’m doing , so no librarian’s ever reprimanded me . — except for snoring loudly at my table once and disrupting the peace . ”
“ then how can anyone know if they’re right if we’re all just acting like we have our stuff together ? “ brows raise in slight amusement , maybe he was a little too sober for big thoughts , he wasn’t a professional yet so it couldn’t really hurt anyone. “ oh i do that all the time , i think its my eyes that give away at the fact that i’m just as lost. “

“just you what?” she had been distracted, so she hadn’t exactly followed the whole conversation for more than a couple seconds. “hating decimals?” she shrugged. “i don’t know. i don’t mind them much. numbers are… safe. science is safe. there’s always facts, you know? it’s the same with math. and decimals. there’s very little room to wonder. i kinda like that.”
“ medicine is straight forward , but its also not at the time. we always have to be ten steps ahead while being perfectly in line. if something goes wrong that’s not in the instructions its not all that easy. “ kind of like math. math was a difficult subject , he had to deal with a lot of it as a biochem major back in undergrad. “ little room to wonder if you know what you’re doing. “

the girl’s never hung out with benji unless bash was around , so this was new , but she was enjoying his chaotic company so far , could see why bash kept the kid around . “ so did you get that book all by yourself ? — did you even read it ? ”
he knew very little about the stewart siblings ? twins ? there were a couple of those around here. “ i want to say yes , but i think meredith helped me out -- i think that’s her name. “ eyes widened in surprise , “ of course i read it , do you think i’m a monster ? “

benji had a really wicked studying face , constantly going over his notes and the notes that he had probably already memorized. he had perfected the act of rigor mortis , as weird as it sounds. he had agreed to study with wyatt because that’s what he tended to do more regularly than not. he was lucky they were at least nerds and happened to study more than others. “ you know i can’t concentrate if you keep staring at me , “ lips curl into a smile before returning to his notes.

it wasn’t often that charlie visited the library, what with his classes all being physical, but he’d recently adopted a keen interest with nasa and their previous flights, so… well, that’s why he was keeping to himself, peering down the different aisles, until he was fortunate enough to cross paths with – whoever this guy was.
smirking, entertained, charles pressed a finger to the top of a book in front of him, pulling out just the corner as he stopped beside the stranger. “you alright there, mate?” he queried, clearly amused.
the library was a fun place , he spend way too much time there in his undergrad , med school was no different and now he perfected the triangle. all the nerdy majors tended to live at the library and the physical majors tended to stay away , unless they had a softer side to them which --- was surprisingly a lot of them. americans tended to find british accents soothing , accents in general tended to be soothing --- never a boston accent. even if they had the body of marky mark , but he was controversial but people tended to forget that fact. “ oh yeah , just fighting with an inanimate object. the usual. “

“I think most of the world,” Alec countered back at his friend with a chuckle. Since he wasn’t a rule-breaker like Benji, he put his book on military history back into its proper space as dictated by the good old dewey decimal system. He didn’t want the wrath of the librarian to fall down upon him. “You know you’re not making finding books in this place any easier?”
“ did you know that most of the world was wrong then ? “ brows rose as he looked at the man then back at the stack of books. benji was always intimidated by the other’s good looks and stature , but then he remembered that he could bulk up --- if he tried , but that meant going to the gym. benji would rather eat pork than go to the gym. “ i think i’m making this place a little better , don’t you think ? “

the library - it’s not a bad place, but definitely not one maddox frequents. mostly, because he hates the decimal system as much as the next person. and really, apparently not as much as benji. and eyebrow raises as she leans against the end of the bookshelf, slight amusement on his face as the other seemingly struggled ; if it was an actual struggle, he’d help, but for now? he’d mess with the guy. “mevil dewey. a real asshole, if you ask me.” a shrug. “think you could make a time machine and go back to stop him from doing it?”
“ with a name like melvil how could you not ? “ benji’s name wasn’t that great either , sounded too proper for his liking but his parents reasoning for it was not. they were too bohemian to actually pick something that didn’t have a cool connotation , that’s why he went as benji --- ben sometimes , but benjamin was rare. someone had once thought his birthname was benji , took him an entire five minutes to convince them otherwise. “ who do you think i should ask ? macguyver or research and development ? “

“REALLY?” SHE DEADPANNED. Katerina had found herself roaming the aisles of the library aimlessly while she was on her break, the last thing she planned on seeing was Benji in a fight with a bookshelf ─ and the bookshelf was winning. “I’ve been watching you struggle for the last five minutes. Tell me, what is it like having twigs for a r m s?”
“ you promised you would be nicer , this doesn’t sound like nicer. “ brows rose as he looked at the woman , small smile gracing his lips. “ it hasn’t been five minutes --- has it , “ he looked down at his watch , maybe she was right. “ i think you could answer that too , “ he let out a chuckle. “ i’m kidding , kidding. “

“melvin dewey?” rory suggested. “although admittedly i don’t know why he decided to organize his library this way. but it’s really not that bad. you just have to remember the ten main groups, and then you know which section of the library to go to. i’m looking for baudelaire, which would fall under literature, and that’s in the 800s. french literature is the 840s, and french poetry is 841. but even if i just knew to look in the 800s, i would have to look through one tenth of the library instead of the whole thing.” it suddenly occurred to rory that the boy was asking a rhetorical question, and her long winded response could be unclear even to someone who actually wanted an answer. being a teacher was still totally foreign to her. “what book did you read?”
“ it just seems slightly outdated if you think about it. too many genres and subgenres that poor ole melvil didn’t even know would exist. “ he had once slept with a girl who actually organized her own book collection that way , it might or might not have scared the crap out of him. that was always a good story to tell though people might not believe that he used to sleep around , he was so calm now a days. “ how long did it take you to memorize the system ? “ he was actually intrigued , he tended to need help despite practically living at the library. “ latest edition of gray’s anatomy , just needed a quick brush up. “
