i'm obsessed with the hypocrisy of neil watts. he loves working at sigcorp. he sees genuine life and value in the digital recreations of his patients' memories. he also takes every opportunity to play god and test the limits of the technology just for fun. turning fantasy into reality is PART OF WHY he loves it so much, but he's also very protective of it, because knows how dangerous it can be. he scolds eva for using the machine on herself as a coping mechanism, when he was doing the exact same thing in secret. he yearns for a world where no one has to be forgotten by time, yet he refuses to let himself into other people's lives. he always preaches about moving on. he can never truly live in the moment because he's too scarred by the past to see a future for himself. he acts pretentious and uptight on purpose. he never gives himself credit when it matters. he's terrified of dying, but he's all nonchalant about it because he ultimately doesn't believe he deserves better than anyone else. he ONLY believes in the make-believe. he gave up on base reality a long time ago.

thinking about how imposter factory sets up "bestest detectives" not only as neil's theme, but as a theme that can represent anyone in his family. how that can translate to representing anyone whose life he touched. and when we're first introduced to the theme, it's established to include eva. according to him, she's the other detective, after all.

neil shares his theme with her so the two are liked together in a way that can never be undone. so it's like when he's gone, she's missing a part of herself. the theme still plays, but the person who it represents is gone. whether he wanted it or not he's altered her life by simply being in it.
