April 8, 1984: Gerry Marsden, Queenie Epstein and Clive Epstein at the opening of Liverpool’s ‘Beatle City’ museum
A clutch of celebrities and a sprinkling of survivors from the Merseybeat heyday were present yesterday to watch an emotional Mrs Queenie Epstein declare Beatle City officially open.
The mother of the former Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, had left a hospital bed to be there, and said, “In many ways this fills me with emotions both deeply moving and pleasant in a sort of sad way.
“The relationship between Brian and the four boys was eminently professional, astoundingly creative and was filled with so many adventures all over the world, some a little crazy but many intensely human.”
- ‘Magical Memory Tour Goes Pop!’ by Peter Trollope, Liverpool Echo, April 9, 1984

Brian Epstein during a press conference held in an attempt to defuse the controversy re: John Lennon’s comments (during an interview with Maureen Cleave) that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus.
“The Beatles are sort of basically very honest people! Naturally as one goes on in this business, one learns… and it is unfortunate that this quote, and this article appeared in a teenage magazine [Datebook] and was open to so much misinterpretation; when it originally appeared in the Evening Standard in London, nothing happened at all. In fact, there were four articles, one on each of the boys, and they were all thought to be of the very best and highest standard. Maureen Cleave is an excellent columnist.”

Brian Epstein and New Musical Express proprietor Maurice Kinn in Miami, during the Beatles’ first US visit. (February 1964)
“The NME’s was the first chart [the Beatles] entered, and we’d done a feature on them right away. I knew Brian Epstein, because he went to school with my brother-in-law. He became a great friend, although he could be shy and reserved. Berenice, my wife, got on very well with him.” - Maurice Kinn (In Their Own Write: Adventures in the Music Press by Paul Gorman)

Video
Associated Press video covering the 2000 Christie’s auction of several of Brian Epstein’s personal effects - including diaries, letters, manuscripts and photographs.
Shortly before his death, Epstein gave the collection to his chauffeur Bryan Barrett [who features in the video] for safekeeping. At a launch two days before the items were due to be auctioned, Mr Barrett said he initially “threw the objects in a cupboard” but recently looked at them in more detail and decided it would no longer “hurt” anyone to make them public as Epstein’s immediate family had all died.
Items showcased in the video include a four page letter to Epstein from Paul McCartney circa 1966/67 - believed to be the first example of a letter between one of the group and their manager to appear at auction.
