Lord Benjicot Blackwood, also known as Ben the Bloody, was head of House Blackwood and Lord of the Tree of Crows during the Dance of the Dragons and the reign of Aegon III Targaryen.
The Blackwoods gave their support to Rhaenyra Targaryen when the Dance of the Dragons broke out. Benjicot became Tree Lord of the Crows at just eleven years old at the start of the civil war, when his father, Lord Samwell Blackwood, was killed by Ser Amos Bracken in single combat during the Battle of Burnt Mill.
He participated in the Battle of the Lakeside where, although the Northlands and Riverlands men defeated those from the Westlands, such was the toll that Ben wept at the piles of corpses. When Prince Aemond Targaryen devastated the Riverlands on Vhagar’s back, Lord Benjicot enlisted Rhaenyra’s help in protecting the river lords with her dragons, but Rhaenyra did not respond to her call.
Ben was one of the river lords who responded to Addam Velaryon’s call to march alongside him on Ladera. During the battle that took place there, he commanded the center of the army, and witnessed the confrontation between the dragons Vermithor, Bruma and Tessarion, which many years later he would report to Grand Master Munkun. When the battle was over, he ordered one of his archers, Billy Burley, to finish off the dragon Tessarion, who was dying in pain. When he returned home he took the body of Addam Velaryon, which he buried in Tree of Ravens.
At the end of the war, and in response to Aegon II Targaryen’s decision to punish the lords who had not sworn allegiance to him, Lord Blackwood joined forces with Lord Elmo Tully to participate in the Battle of the Royal Road. The riparians led by Benjicot broke through the trees, destroying the flank of Lord Borros Baratheon’s army. He managed to disperse the tormenteños and achieve victory, earning himself the nickname of Blood Ben. Ben and his companions later marched to King’s Landing to besiege the city, but before King Aegon II was even betrayed and killed by his men.
It is said that Ben and his aunt Aly were dismayed when they learned of the king’s death, as they considered poison a weapon of cowards and without honor. Benjicot Blackwood, Lord Kermit Tully, and his brother Ser Oscar, bound by battle, became inseparable and became known as the Boys. Ben remained in King’s Landing while Aegon III Targaryen was crowned and the council of regents formed. When he returned to Raven Tree with his aunt, they were escorted by a thousand Northerners who had come south with Lord Cregan Stark.
Lord Blackwood was considered one of the potential candidates to marry Lady Baela Targaryen, the king’s half-sister. In 132 AD, Benjicot marched to Winterfell to attend his aunt Alysanne’s wedding to Lord Cregan Stark. As it was the middle of winter, the trip took three times as long as planned, being attacked by outlaws who stole all the wedding gifts.
When the death of Queen Jaehaera Targaryen took place the following year, Lord Unwin Peake, Hand of the King and Protector of the Realm, secretly arranged the wedding between the king and his daughter Myrielle. Many lords raised their voices when they found out; Ben questioned the haste, arguing that they must have left Aegon at least half a year to mourn their queen.
In 134 AD Lord Ben led a thousand Blackwood men who joined the army led by Ser Robert Rowan, who was heading to the Valley of Arryn to solve the Arryn succession problem. Benjicot, who had not yet reached the age of majority, assumed command of the army when Ser Robert was killed by the men of the Moon Mountains clans during the voyage. Lord Alyn Velaryon and Ben the Bloody managed to bring order to the Valley and force the remaining partisans to surrender their allegiance to Lord Joffrey Arryn.
In 136 A.D. Lord Benjicot Blackwood was considered a candidate for Hand of the King, but was discarded as too young.
Benjicot Blackwood had a long life.

Queen Alyssa || Art by Doug Wheatley for Fire & Blood
The royal clemency did not extend to all. Maegor’s headsman, gaolers, and confessors were all adjudged to be guilty of abetting Tyanna of the Tower in the torture and death of Prince Viserys, who had so briefly been Maegor’s heir and hostage. Their heads were delivered to Queen Alyssa, together with the hands they had dared raise against the blood of the dragon. Her Grace pronounced herself “well pleased” with the tokens.
