Is Your Photography Any Good?

We live in a world where people are eager to criticise negatively other peoples work, that kind of criticism has no place here. But, if we as photographers wish to continue progressing we must be willing to accept constructive criticism that will direct further improvement. That is the idea behind the title question.

The reality is that by pressing a button and taking a picture without any notion of what constitutes a well-composed image is an effortless act. The result is seldom sublime hence the question - Are your pictures any good? How can you tell?

What constitutes a good image? Photography is very subjective and provided you enjoy taking and viewing your photographs why should anyone judge them unworthy?

Throughout the centuries master painters have shown that worthwhile work of art depend on a combination of many things that harmoniously come together to form a great picture.

Simply put, a great photograph is one that stands out from the rest, it stirs the imagination and it becomes part of your photographic memories.

A good image is crafted by the photographer. Students of photography need to reach a basic platform that will provide them with a solid foundation that will enable the them to learn how to use the basic elements of photographic design.

The Foundation of a good photograph

A successful photograph can be compared to writing an article. It must have a theme, that theme must be emphasised and simplified. In photographic terms what does this mean?

The theme is the main idea -why did you click the button to take the picture? To illustrate, in music a theme is a melody repeated often enough to characterize the entire composition.

The theme must be simplified -if it isn't, the image may be cluttered with information that doesn't contribute to the theme and is distracting. Everything that doesn't contribute to the theme must be removed. Very few photographs can survive without being cropped or refined.

The editing process continues even after the camera has recorded the image. Are there any distracting objects? Unnecessary empty spaces? Too much foreground or background? Refinement can be done in Photoshop or other equivalent software. If you use film then changes can also be made to a lesser degree by the film Lab.

Cropping the image to include only the elements of beauty that we desire starts before the picture is taken and it's an excellent management procedure to follow. Just by moving slightly forward, backward, to one side, higher, or lower, we can adjust the elements of beauty or the lighting entering our picture.

Isolating the Elements of Beauty

Forms and Patterns -some are linear; others are shapeless like a cloud. When the same form is repeated, it creates a pattern that may also be visually appealing.

Light -without it there's no photography. Light varies according to the time of day, the season of the year, the weather and even the place where we live. A cloudy day with its diffused light is ideal to photograph portraits, for revealing the subtle tones of wildflowers or autumn leaves, whereas the quality of the light and colour by sun rising or sunset can best reveal the majesty of a mountain range. The strong sunlight in the middle of the day is most often unflattering.

Colour -we're surrounded by thousands of different colours and yet we're only visually aware of a relatively few. Objects reveal their uniqueness by their colour. Colour just like music is powerful, it can make us feel emotional, even aid us to visualize a cold or a hot day.

Composition -the way in which form, light, and colour - combine determines the composition. There's a danger of over-simplifying the element of composition. To many photographers, composition is one of the most difficult elements of beauty to master. There isn't a system that can be applied in all situations, photographic composition depends greatly on the eye of the photographer.

There are rules that over many years the masters of art have devised whose application contribute to a strong arrangement.
