3 ACT STRUCTURE - PART 2
In the previous blog we looked at what is 3 Act structure. In this blog we are going to look at each of this act in details.
Act 1 (Set up)
In Setup we have two things:
Hook: It tells audience why they should watch the films. It grabs the attention of the audience. Usually in hook we have question. This creates curiosity in audience and watch whole films to find the answer. In hook, we also sometimes use mid story, or action scenes to grab audience attention. It is considered to be good hook in most of the cases.
Example: Avengers: Endgame
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this we that Hawkeye is enjoying with his family, but suddenly due to the snap he lost them all. Also Iron man recording one video, where he is not sure whether he will be alive or not. This both the scene create curiosity among the audience, and they were able to connect with the Avengers Infinity war. This makes audience curious whether Ironman will be saved and all the families will be back or not.
Inciting event: In this, it brushes up the protagonist against problem. Here hero has the choice to go back without involving in the problem or go with the situation. In this we see the Glims of the problems, which continues till the 1st plot. It usually covers around 12% of the story.
Tumblr media
In Endgame, Avengers located Thanos, and they had chance of not going to him and involve in fight, but they went and fought. Where they found that infinity stones are destroyed and they were left with no hope.
Act 2 (Confrontation)
1st Plot point: It covers 25% of the story. It is major plot point, where in this hero fully deals with the conflict. He has entered in it, now he can't go back. It is now setup is done, and hero is engaged with conflict.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the Endgame, we see that five years later. In this everything was settled, but Scott Lang returns from the Quantum Realm. Where he suggests the idea of time heist. Even Ironman was ready to that. All the Avengers started working on the time heist mission.
1st pinch point: It covers 37% of the story. Here hero deals with the fist problem and cross the obstacle. Here the stakes of the hero and antagonist forces are introduced. In this actually they deal with the problem.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We saw that all the Avengers were broken. We see everyone's emotional side, what they have lost. In this all the Avengers gather together to go in past. Where they all came together and started planning about the team. They Understood the stakes, that they might lose their life too in this, if they couldn't come back.
Midpoints (2nd Plot Point): In hero understand the problem and their point of view changes. This mainly happens at the 50% of the story. It has the major change, or the twist and they understand how seviour the problem is. In this stage everything gets serious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this we see that Avengers were able to do the time heist, and they were fighting and able to find all the stones. Ironman got idea about how they can have more chemicals for the time travel. However, in this process, they lost their teammates. Natasha was dead on Vormir for the soul stone. Also, Nebula was caught.
2nd Pinch point: It covers 66% of the story. It acts as 1st pinch point. In this we get to know that hero has not won, as we see false victory. Where in reality the villain is wining, but hero thinks that he is wining.
Tumblr media
Here we saw that Avengers were able to get all the infinity stones, and they were able to bring all the people who was killed by Thanos, but they couldn't bring back to Natasha.
Tumblr media
In addition, Nebula opens the time travel portal, through with Thanos come to the actual timeline with his army. All the Avengers were happy, but they didn't know that this was going one.
3rd Plot point: This part is the end of act 2 where it covers 75% of the story. The false victory followed by the low moment. It is lowest point of the all-time. The hero can't fall more than this or else he or she will die. From this part the character arc will rise. This will be the beginning of the act 3.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the Endgame we see that all the Avengers, who was fighting with Thanos, was at the lowest point, where they lost their hope. Everyone was injured and Thanos called his army.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then we see the portal of the Avengers where all the avengers came together like Panther, Doctor strange and Spider man etc. From here the situation was changing and the characters arc was going up.
Act 3 (Resolution)
Climax: It is the last 10% of the story. It is known as a final battle, twist and turning point. Climax can be ending in most of the situation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the climax, we see that Thanos was winning and after the fight with the captain marvel, Ironman took the infinity stones and snap it. This was the turning point. In this Thanos, died and the universe was saved, however we lost Ironman.
The End: It is the end of the story where we see growth of the characters. Here the arc gets completed. It completes the 100% of the story. Here the new aquarium forms.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this we see the ending where all the Avengers were attending the Furnel of Iron man, and then everyone returns for their work. We also see that Captain America returns the infinity stones and story ends.
All the images are the screenshots from the movie "Avengers: The endgame".

3 ACT STRUCTURE - PART 1
Have you ever wondered, why some stories keep you to your seat, while watching it. However, there are some which doesn't do this. I just because of how story is being told or written. Most of the great stories follows one framework: Three act structure. There are many, but mostly this is used. It works on the screenplay, where this structure is applied to the screenplay while writing it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let's have detail understanding about three act structure.
Tumblr media
It is called three act structure because it is divided into 3 parts. Each of them is divided as per the storyline in movie.
Act1: Act 1 which is known as a Set up. In this all the information about the characters and what they are looking for and conflict are introduced to the audience.
Example: The Intern
Tumblr media
In this we get to know about the main character Ben. Who is looking for some life goal as he has nothing to do, where he got chance to apply for intern and then got selected.
Act 2: it is known as Confrontation. In this all the stakes and forces are shown. Where the protagonist tries to overcome the problems and he or she is in the mid-way to solve it. In this part the protagonist learns more about the villain and mistakes which he or she was making.
Example: Avengers Endgame
Tumblr media
In this we see that all the Avengers found way to save all the people who lost their life, because of Thanos. They made plan and did the time travel to collect the Infinity Stone.
Act 3: It is known as a resolution. It has climax and ending, where we see the changes in the characters. Their character Arc is completed, where we see the conclusion or the ending to the story. The hero has overcome the obstacles.
Example: The Godfather (1972)
Tumblr media
In this the struggle of power in mafia world got resolve. Michael succeeds in wiping out all of his enemies and becoming godfather, where he is known as don.
This all together creates the 100% of story. Int he most of the time, act 1 covers the 25% of the story. Act 2 covers 50% of the story. Lastly act 3 covers last 25% of the story. However, this can be different as per the preference as it has no compulsion.

Narration
While watching any film, have you ever felt that the hero was talking to you? Or that there is someone who knows everything, including what the hero is thinking or what exactly the villain is planning? This is all felt because of the narration, which makes them unforgettable.
A story is not all about the events we see in sequence, but it is also about how it has been narrated and who has told the story. The narrator is someone who becomes our guide, helping us feel the story and shape our vision of the characters in the story.
There are different types of Narrators.
First person narrator - When the main hero is talking about himself. It can be anyone, but he or she has to narrate his or her story in the movie.
Barfi
Tumblr media
In this movie, the whole story has been narrated through the perspective of the people, who knew Barfi. People talked about him in flashbacks. The narration made audience connect with the main characters. I myself started looking at Barfi as an innocent, mischievous young man, with disabilities. All the emotional stories and details made me fall in love with the character and see him more than just a disabled person.
Second person narrator - When some other persons narrate someone else's story in the movie. Example: he was coming from the market and suddenly car hits him.
(eg. 12th Fail)
Limited third person narrator - In this narrator just tell audience what is happing in the story, no extra details. It narrates all the scene which can be seen on the screen by audience. This narrator can or cannot be the part of story.
Example: The Intern
Tumblr media
In this, we see everything in the perspective of Ben but there's no direct narration or voiceover from him. Whatever we saw, fell and heard was through him, especially his bond with Jule.
Ominous narrator - This narrator is also called GOD of the story, as he is aware of each and every part of the story, including the life of protagonist and what he or she will do everything. They tell things before the scene will happen. Example, Now Police will catch the thief, and the main culprit will be caught.
Example: Raid 2
Tumblr media
In this the story is narrated by Tauji, played by Saurabh Shukla. He recaps the audience of the first film and kept on narrating things which was going to happen. Example when he was in the swimming pool of the same hotel, where Amay Patnaik (The hero) was going to raid. He was aware of everything in the film. Whose authority will fall was told by him beforehand.
Unreliable narrator - In this narrator do prediction and it get fail. Narrator lies most of the time to raise the interest of the audience. Example: Fight club
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though this was the first-person narration. but the narrator was lying throughout the movie. We are able to listen to the narrator and feel him. However, at the everything was made up. It was because of his disorder. which means he doesn鈥檛 realize that Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) is just a projection of his split personality.
Fly on the wall narrator - When the narrator is narrating through some objects or insect. They are not mainly involved in the story but present, they are silent and present like camera. They cannot participate in the overall story. They just observe and narrate.
Example: Gullak
Tumblr media
Gullak is drama series made on the Mishra family, where we see the middle-class family and their day today problems. How they deal with it and how they all are supportive and live together. In this, each of the episode starts with the narration by the Gullak present in the family of Mishra ji.

Meet - Cutes
Meet cutes is a scene or the moments in the film, where two people come together for the first time. It can be unusual meeting or some funny scenes. This mostly used to show the love, where characters are falling in love. It can be a single character or both. A guy bumps into a girl at a coffee shop and spilling her coffee, this moment is also called a meet cutes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meet cutes adds the humour, romance and they feel like magic as they are mix of coincidence, charm, and chemistry. They remind us that love can start in the most unexpected ways.
There are 4 types of Meet cutes, which is based on internal and External factors.
Internal means the meet up affected by the external factors like family, friends, time, situation, etc. Whereas Internal is opposite to external factors, where the lead characters meet due to their personality, mood like reaction to the situation etc.
Example of Internal and External factor is:
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Tumblr media
In this the external factor is when the bunny met Naina on a trekking trip, where she has come suddenly and he鈥檚 already the life of the group, where he was more playful and funnier guy. They both were on the same trip.
Internal factor could be in this is their personality. Naina was more into books, scared and always heisted, but Bunny was different he was outgoing and adventurous. This bought them together.
Now let's look at the four types of Meet cutes.
Pull - Pull- In this two people want to meet and be together but always pulled apart by an external factor.聽
Example : Sita Ramam
Tumblr media
In this, both the characters were in love with each other unconditionally. They wanted to spend their time together, but the misunderstandings, duty and war kept them away from each other.
Push Push- The main characters don鈥檛 want to meet but due to external factor they are pushed towards each other. They have no ideas about each other, but they end up living together.
Example: 聽Tamasha
Tumblr media
In this Ved and Tara meet in Corsica, a beautiful island in France, while both are on vacation. They spend their vacation together, where Tara lost her passport and money. Ved tried to help her out and together they spent their time, but they make one pact. They were not going to reveal anything about them including their names. They will spend their time until Tara's problem gets resolved.
Tumblr media
Here they both doesn't want to be together, but they fall in love, but the situation and place made Tara fall for him.
Push Pull- Where one person wants to be together, but another person doesn鈥檛 want to be together.
Example: Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
Tumblr media
In this Ayan the main character wants love from the Alizeh. He tried doing everything for her. He was deeply in love with her. However, even though Alizeh was aware of Ayan's true feeling. She kept on keeping him as a friend. She just wanted friendship and got married to another guy.
Tumblr media
Neutral-nervous- One person is very neutral, and other person is in love and wants to be together, but he is very nervous聽
Example: Premalu
Tumblr media
Sachin the main character is very nervous, and overly eager to impress the girl (Reenu) to whom he loves. Whereas Reenu was calm, polite, and mostly neutral. She doesn鈥檛 dislike him, but she isn鈥檛 particularly interested either. She was natural throughout except the ending.

STORY END
Stroy ending is not just an end scene, but it is more about the emotions which is being carry out throughout the movie, which get resolve. It's the point where all the conflict, emotion and dreams of the characters converge and leave its last impression on the viewer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ending mainly depends on the protagonist, where the need/ wants/ desire of the main character get fulfilled or sometimes it doesn't. Some endings are happy ending聽some sad ending聽some tragedy and some are left as a cliff hanger.
If the needs and want / desire of the protagonist get fulfilled, then the conflict get resolve which leads to happy ending most of the time. This makes the viewer happy, and satisfied, however there are some movies which didn't had a happy ending, or we can say conflict wasn't resolve, which made them sad and its lefts impactfully impression on them. One of the examples is Titanic's last scene.
Tumblr media
youtube
In the ending, after jack's death, the film closes by showing the older Rose, where she kept all the memories of Jack and died while sleeping. This whole scene was beautiful, but as a audience according to me wanted this ending. Everyone wanted Jack and Rose to be together, however they couldn't, and Rose lived the life just like how Jack wanted her to live. Then she returned to Jack at the end. This ending was a bittersweet ending.
Well, bittersweet ending is one type of ending. We have multiple ending and let's look at each one of them one by one.
4 types of story ends:聽
Sweet Ending: In this the need and want both are fulfilled. As a audience we are satisfied too just like the characters in the movies. Protagonist is happy in his world with the end, which is given
Example: The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
Tumblr media
In this Chris Gardner, who lost his family. His wife left her with his son, and he struggled to manage the food. Additionally, he was struggling to get the Job, but at the end he gets his job, and both father and son walk happily.
2. Semi Sweet Ending: It is when the need is fulfilled, but the want is not.
Example: Avengers End Game
Tumblr media
In Avengers End Game, as a sweet part we saw that avengers were able to undo Thanos' snap, which brought back everyone who was lost. Through this the humanity was saved, families were returned, which made people happy, and peace was restored in the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, in the bitter side, there was lots of loss and sacrifices. Audience lost Iron Man. He sacrificed his life to save everyone. Black Widow died while bringing the soul stone. Lastly the Steve Rogers stays in the past, where he grew older by leaving his team and timeline behind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While the mission was successful; the Earth was saved but at the great personal cost. Audience was happy with the ending that the earth was saved but they lost some characters, which made them feel sad.
3.Bittersweet Ending: When want is fulfilled but not the need.
Example: Rockstar
Tumblr media
In this the Jordan, the main character wanted to become rockstar. In this process he got to know that for becoming an rockstar he has to suffer pain. Then he met a girl named Heer. She was already engaged. In this story, Jorden becomes the Rockstar, but the pain of love and lonely destroyed him from inside.
Tumblr media
He loses his love and peace of mind in the process.
4. Bitter Ending - In this both no want and need get fulfilled.
Example: The Infinity War
Tumblr media
In this the Avengers tried to stop Thanos from collecting the six Infinity Stones. Thanos, who believed that the universe is overpopulated, and resources are limited, therefore he planned to wipe out half of the life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this Thanos collected all six stones, attacked Avengers and snaps his finger. This instantly, clean the half of the population of the universe, where Spider-Man, Black Panther, Doctor Strange and many more had disappeared. In this the Villain won, and heroes failed. The film ends with tragedy, loss and in darkness, with no resolution. This makes it a bitter ending film.
