I like to do Fangschorcher before locking in their romance just so I can rotate scenarios like this in my brain.

[ Short fic for Neve Week day 5 - Magic! Neve, Rook and Harding take a breather. Pre-Weisshaupt. ]
-------
There’s a saying in Minrathous that you walk into one of three things on a good day - a bar, a joke, or a trap.
Neve walked into bars like it was her job - which, to be fair, it kind of was. And she lived with the consequences of a trap or three. She usually managed to avoid the jokes, though. She had the kind of poker face that could fizzle them out quick enough when they weren’t going where she wanted.
Which left her with a curious feeling now, because Rook was obviously going somewhere ridiculous with this, and yet Neve didn’t want to stop it.
“I mean, it could be fun. I could show you how to shoot and you could show me… something!” Rook was waving her arm in the air for emphasis, as though it would cause the Something to materialize. Nothing did, and Neve shook her head.
“First of all,” Neve started, “my arm still smarts from the last time you tried to teach me to shoot—”
“I did tell you to turn out your elbow out more.”
“—and second of all, no amount of teaching is going to have you slinging magic by now. Usually.” Neve amended the statement with a shrug at Harding. The three of them were in the corner of the Lighthouse dining room, and Harding was nursing her drink as she watched responses fly between Neve and Rook the way a cat would watch a hummingbird.
Neve worried about Harding’s neck a bit.
“We’re living in unprecedented times, Neve Gallus,” Rook replied. She set her own cup down; she’d drunk it down to the ice, and now Neve was worried about a second thing. Rook continued.  “Harding isn’t the only one who’s learned to throw some spells around.”
“Oh really,” Neve said, a curiosity in her voice that she was surprised to actually feel. Of course she didn’t expect Rook to do magic, but something unexpected was coming, and she was now worried about a secret third thing. She was walking into it anyway. “Show me, then.”
If Neve had a brutal poker face, Rook had whatever the complete opposite was. A joker face? Neve hadn’t had enough of her own drink for words to be this hard, but she wondered if Rook ever knew how much her shit-eating grin gave away the game even when she was sober.
“Alright, then, go ahead and look over there.” Rook was nodding at a nearby chair, her face lit brighter than the gaudiest bar sign in Dock Town.
Neve raised an eyebrow. She turned toward the chair expectantly as—
“MAGIC, GO!”
—Rook’s yell heralded a chunk of ice that narrowly missed Neve’s arm as it crashed into the chair. She had a good arm.
Neve heard a distressed gurgle behind her and turned around to see Harding mopping at a rush of drink that had, apparently, come out her nose. Rook discarded her now-empty cup and sheepishly dashed across the room for a few towels, which she held out like a peace offering when she returned.
“‘Magic, go’? That’s really the best you could do?” Neve asked with an incredulous laugh as she accepted a towel. She started mopping melted ice from the small table.
Rook shrugged. “Come on, now, I thought we were having an ice time-“
Rook’s reply was cut off by Neve’s towel plopping into her face.

Neve Week 2025 Day 1 Drabble
[Investigation | Desperation]
@datvcompanionweeks
Word Count: 100
“Okay, Fred,” Neve stood in front of the pinboard, hands resting on her lower back. Beside her, Fred did his best to mimic her pose.
“We’ve gathered all the clues we can. That’s the first step. Now we need to put them together.” Fred made a gravelly hiss of agreement. Neve smirked. He was a studious little apprentice.
“What do you think? It’s your investigation, Fred.” The little skeleton was quiet and still for a moment, then tapped a feather pinned to the board.
“Assan?” Neve glanced at Fred as he nodded.
“It’s a solid lead. He does love truffles.”

The hidden areas of the Lighthouse make me laugh because I just imagine Rook getting up there and companions seeing them and losing their shit. "Rook, how the hell." Bellara looking up and seeing Rook at the library balcony like "???"
Davrin walking behind his house and seeing Rook on the floating building and going "Rook get the FUCK down." Can't leave Rook unsupervised for five minutes

thinking about one of the first times rook flirts with neve and says “trouble’s not always a bad thing.”
then in the codex entry of neve’s notes after the dock kiss, neve writes “…but rook can back it. some trouble isn’t a bad thing. we really should get that supper sometime.”
MEANING that neve has been thinking about rook saying that since before the first major decision of the game.
rook, to me, is a person who has constantly gotten pushed away because they cause too much trouble when they try to do the right thing. their faction pushes them out of their home when they try to help people. varric gets killed hurt partially because rook tried a risky plan. and rook still tries to keep going and “causing trouble” in the eyes of some people because they know it’s right.
and here’s this woman, neve gallus, who chases trouble for a living and yet is terrified to let anything close to her because of how dangerous it is for both parties. neve gallus calls rook Trouble like it’s a good thing, because it is.
rook causes trouble and gets pushed away. neve chases trouble and tries to push people away who get too close. and somehow neve is still perhaps the first person (romantically) who likes that rook can cause trouble, even if it scares the part of her still trying to construct her emotional walls.
tldr: rook gets sent away for being too much trouble. neve gallus kisses them and calls them Trouble. the neve romance is everything to me
