So you know that thing where like tractor companies argue they’re just LEASING their tractors to farmers, and farmers have to pay subscription fees to keep the tractor software updated or the tractor will stop working?

You know how Apple makes it as difficult as possible to repair their tech and then they make it break after a couple years and then they sue third parties who repair it so you’re forced to buy repairs or new items only from them at exorbitant prices?

You know how Adobe voided all the legitimately purchased copies of older versions of photoshop so people would be forced to move to their new versions that run on a subscription model?

You know the companies that patent their strains of potato or wheat and then sue anyone whose fields get accidentally cross-pollinated with it or who tries to keep some of their harvest to replant?

You know how that’s all desperately unethical and eroding the rights of individuals to own personal property and squeezing people for unearned money and just generally being shitty?

I didn’t think you COULD have a smalltime creator version of that but here it is.

If only Broadie were more than a year old so I could imagine this was about me. XD

Protip for dutchie lovers: I have never done this with any other species, because no other community has been SO DAMN OBNOXIOUS about policing people outside their community and making me feel involved despite not owning a member of the species and not wanting to. Respect is a two-way street and is earned.

The DAD mods and their vocal supporters, if you run into them, will pitch a great big fit about how you can’t do that. And then you can fart in their faces, which will be just as meaningful a contribution to the conversation.

Yeah, I was a big supporter for dutchies and their cool world and such. But that's the past now. I still got 50+ fuzzy dragons and I want to know if I can keep the horse look or do I need to get an artist to redraw all of them... can't I keep the looks and just remove the 'Dutch' from them? Or is it that since I was part of the fandom and know the species that I cant do it?

You can do absolutely anything you want with your own characters and anyone who tells you otherwise can trip down the stairs.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, I have wonderful friends.

Imagine claiming an entire real-world species for yourself. Imagine being the kind of person that people have to even worry you might try to do that.

I made two dutchies myself, but I am so afraid of having to get them "approved" because of how awful the community and damins have shown to be. I'm also afraid that I'd get flak because one of my dutchies is also based off an american kestrel, and I don't think the admins would appreciate her existence (nevermind that she looks completely different from Sniper, anyway).

It’s a justifiable thing to be concerned about! The admins are so wildly inconsistent and hypocritical about upholding their own rules, it’s hard to predict what they’ll do; moreover, there’s something of an unspoken rule that what applies to the community doesn’t apply to the admins. They might love your design, and then next month, someone else will come in with a character based on a kestrel and be dogpiled for it. More often than not, it all seems to boil down to what mood the admins are in on any given day.

Best advice? Be proud of your dutches and try not to care what the community thinks. If they love them? Fantastic, they should love them! If they don’t, they can sit in syrup. Have fun, surround yourself with the former, and do you, Anon.

And if you go through their explanation--first they claim that DADs have this sooper dooper specific anatomy and that you just have to make sure you’re not using that anatomy so you don’t get mistaken for a dutchie. Then their explanation of what that anatomy is gets wider... and wider... and wider... encompassing horse, cat, dog, dragon, and bird--ANY mixture of those--all of that still falls under their purview, their moderation, their rules, according to them. And THEN they say that people who have tried to establish other angel dragon species with their own distinct guidelines were “not approved” by them and therefore STILL would get you banned, as if they have the right to regulate the whole concept of angel dragons. And finally they say essentially that you can’t even start with the idea of a furry feathered dragon, your base idea HAS to be a basic Western dragon to avoid getting in trouble with them. Ie, a scaled and bat-winged dragon.

THIS DESPITE THE FACT THAT FURRY FEATHERY DRAGON CONCEPTS HAVE EXISTED FIVE-EVER,

are not unique to Ino or the DAD community, are NOT COPYRIGHTABLE OR REGULATABLE, cannot by any stretch of the imagination be said to belong to them in any way shape or form, and people in this conversation are specifically saying very clearly that their characters are not dutchies and they won’t look the same as when they were intended to be dutchies.

tl;dr: The DAD admins are SUPER OVERREACHING by a whole fucking lot and sticking their flag all over the entire creative space that includes feathered dragons, while claiming not to do that. The fact that they claim not to be doing that shows they KNOW they have no real claim and they’re doing something that would be frowned on--but they’re doing it anyway.

The “if it looks like one, it is one” rule in action. 

This is actually a fairly recent innovation, as previously, people who wanted a character with the general look of a Dutch Angel Dragon but none of the restrictions simply joined the Angel Dragon community, run by ex-Dutch Pearl. The official Angel Dragon community mysteriously dissolved sometime last year, and the video promising an explanation never arrived.

Now, if you leave the community, you’re expected to change your character. And as Nimbus points out here, if your character is portrayed in NSFW art – regardless of what species you call them – you will be permanently banned.

I know this is just because I’m a nosy gossipy asshole, but I would have LOVED to have been a fly on the wall when (from what it sounds like in this post) Ino was looking through the last year of the admins’ posts on dutchie relationships and sexuality and presumably/hopefully going “!???!??!!!? Wtf you guys, what asscrack did you pull this shit from???”

Hope somebody/somebodies got chewed out, they deserve it.

Holy crap, that’s unexpected and fantastic!

Very, very good news! Ino has stepped in to state, in no uncertain terms, that Dutches can be LGBTQ+, identify with certain genders, enter asexual romantic partnerships that you’re free to define however you like (although the species specific term is “songfilies”), and have offspring together. In addition, she offers an apology to anyone who may have been negatively affected in the interim.

We believe in giving credit where credit is due, and this is how you address criticism and consider real world implications. This is a charming, liberating addition to the species’ lore that stays true to their nature as physically sexless beings of energy.

Kudos to you, Ino!

Like oh, okay--so you’re saying the rules can be bent if you have a good reason like, uh, being too lazy to make one more change to the base you’re already altering, or just finding a different base. It’s okay to make that exception for that piece of art, because that one piece of art doesn’t change the dutchie canon or affect other people in any way.

But only if you’re an admin. If you’re any other player, the second you post your art with Little Furry Dragon Tits the entire admin team is going to pour down your throat howling (politely! 9__9 ) that it’s Wrong and Bad.

Setting aside the fact that we all know WHY there’s a double standard--if you actually find it important to enforce dutchie canon in the community and get community members on board, don’t you think you ought to start with your own characters, being as they’re so visible and people are naturally going to be looking at them to find out what’s acceptable? Lead by example, and all that?

Not if you’re an ~*archangel*~ apparently.

So basically I made a comment on a post about “Funny how the admins can break the rules they so strictly enforce” in regards to the mentality and VooDoo’s VooBoobs

And this is the response I get:

1) “Let me address your concerns, but first, let me inform you that your very legitimate comment has been removed for invoking drama. If you have any concerns, please bring them to us in private, where they can be addressed in complete secrecy.”

2) The issue isn’t even that Voodoo’s ref has obvious breasts or that the “old” ref has been up for years, sitting unchanged. The issue is that users below Voodoo are being berated for doing the very same thing. This is a constant with the admins. They enforce a rigid, often contradictory set of rules, but have no interest in adhering to them personally.

3) The Toothless analogy is patently ridiculous. Toothless isn’t a child, or even childlike. While he’s occasionally silly and animal-like, and while his intelligence has dulled over the years in the name of marketing, Toothless is for the most part, a very competent, sapient adult creature capable of making adult choices. He can choose where and how he wants to live, reject a prosthetic for deeply personal reasons, and fall in love. 

4) Dutches can understand what pride is enough to be supportive of humans, but the moment they’re made to identify with an orientation or gender themselves, some sort of line has been crossed. Until the admins can get past their obvious discomfort with the idea of LGBTQ+ people making LGBTQ+ characters, they have no business claiming to be supportive of LGBTQ+ people.

So rather than owning up to their mistake and offering an apology, Nimbus is just doubling down on the “I support LGBTQ” narrative and hoping everyone will just forget that they said this to 10,000 people during Pride month.

Don’t let them.

You don’t get to claim woke points while espousing an ice-cold take like “this entire species cannot be queer,” “this species which canonically has no physical sex but can identify as a binary gender isn’t trans,” or “this asexual species isn’t queer.”

And you don’t get to rugsweep the big huge public stink you made, and all the effects that rippled out from it, by quietly changing those policies. You have to OWN WHAT YOU DID AND APOLOGIZE FOR REAL. Just as publicly as you did it in the first place.

No, Nimbus. You kicked off last Pride month with a reminder that “dutchies can’t be gay” so that everyone had to add awful disclaimers to their art all month long. 

You owe the community a damn apology, and until then, you have no right to retweet things like this.

Nimbus informing everyone that dutches are three year old children, so don’t have them building or understanding rocket science or anything of that nature.
