the sign at the beginning of the musical is spelled like the star, the way it’s spelled in the movie. so what if it actually is spelled ‘Betelgeuse’?
option 1: he doesn’t want to risk people mispronouncing it at a critical moment, so he spells it phonetically. what could be worse than going through all that trouble only for someone to try and summon “bettelgoose”
option 2 (superior option): he doesn’t know that’s how it’s spelled. He’s never seen it written down and he can’t spell for shit anyway and let’s be real I have no trouble believing Juno wouldn’t bother to teach him.
He doesn’t find out until Lydia asks him if his name has anything in common with the star “even though it’s spelled differently”
“yeah me and the star have the same name, what the hell do you mean ‘spelled differently’?”
“b-e-t-e-l-g-e-u-s-e”
“THAT’S HOW YOU SPELL MY NAME?!”
“DO YOU NOT KNOW HOW TO SPELL YOUR OWN NAME ARE YOU SERIOUS OH MY GOD”
“FUCK YOU THAT SPELLING IS BULLSHIT WHY DOES IT HAVE A G IN IT”

Me, waking up in the middle of the night: Beetlejuice's mom's last name in the DC run was Shoggoth. Assuming this is still true this means Beetlejuice's father is Mr. Shoggoth. Shoggoth's are monsters from H.P. Lovecraft mythos. Shoggoth's are amorphous, iridescent, beings capable of forming multiple limbs and organs at will. Beetlejuice is shown to grow extra limbs throughout the musical and changes the color of his hair and clothing based on his emotion much like a octopus. His mother, does not seem to have these color-changing abilities which is why she complains about his color-changing hair.
Conclusion: Beetlejuice is a half-demon, half-Lovecraftian horror.
