“We were figuring out a way to honor the show’s DNA and what people would expect and want but then bring a contemporary sensibility to it. One way of doing that is to really explore the locations of “Rent” in a way you can’t on a typical proscenium stage. The way that we are going to tell this story is going to feel very intimate and very expansive at the same time. You’ll see the grittiness of the tent cities and Mark’s dim apartment, but also the spaces the characters create for themselves, like the Life Café, a place full of lights and murals and graffiti installations. The America that we live in today is as divided and dangerous as any other time in America to be a queer person or a person of color or a trans person or an immigrant. This is a story about acceptance and love and togetherness and unity. It’s about celebrating who you are, building your family (and your space) the way your heart leads.”

“I went to Punxsutawney. It was an interesting trip that I took about two years ago. I was expecting to come away with lots of specific reference material, different locations, and actually there was nothing there that was of any use to me in terms of putting scenery onstage and telling a story. What I did come away with was a sense of warmth and community. You can’t take a photograph of that. You just experience it. I was slightly crestfallen because I thought, “Well, that’s not going to help me necessarily with the design for a show,” but it turned out that it was actually the thing that we ended up leaning on. What I’ve tried to do is, wherever possible, there’s the presence of a sun and a snowflake. This is subliminal and no one makes a big deal of it, but it helps you get the feeling that, there are opposites at play the whole time. If you look carefully, you’ll find that in every single image.”

“Having grown up in the desert, a horizon line was massively important to me. Creating that in a texture that went across all the buildings starting with the sand and the sand tones, and then they actually rise up as we hit that horizon—where the thicker textures start to dissipate—we get into the more desert skies. It actually fades into a blue. As the lights are coming down, the shadows on the buildings become more pronounced and we actually see that texture and how it’s becoming transformed as well by the sun. It’s such an important element in desert communities. All these buildings respond and relate to it.“

We have been through so much together. I mean, yeah, sure, for you, you know, each time I rebooted you, you met me all over again. But for me, our…our relationship has become important. You’re my oldest, my truest, my most loyal friend.
