I am finally leaving my place of birth, South Africa, to experience the world. First stop, South Korea!

Tax Exemption and Proof of Residency Certificate - for South Africans!
Do you want to be exempt from Korean taxes whilst teaching English in South Korea? You need a certificate of proof of residency! For anyone who needs to apply for a certificate of proof or residency in South Africa, before leaving to teach English in South Korea, here is the information you need! I have been struggling to the ends of earth to find this information, so I hope this is helpful to anyone going over to teach. The South African Department of Home Affairs were incredibly unhelpful.
It's quite a simple process, but bear in mind it can take some time. All you need is your tax number (if you don't have a tax number, apply for one through SARS. Visit www.sars.gov.za for more information) and an application form for a SARS residence certificate.
I applied for my certificate a week before I left for South Korea. I recommend applying for your certificate earlier than that, so it can save ZAR on having a relative or trusted 3rd party mail it to you in South Korea. In addition, it is important you hand this document in to your placement school well in advance of your first stipend pay. I would recommend the first week you arrive at the school, because they too have to ensure the documentation is eligible etc.
If you have left it to the last minute, like I did, a wonderful third party service can do it for you! All you need to do is contact Docs4Expats ([email protected]) and a wonderful lady, Nomathemba Khumalo, will do all the 'dirty work' for you, provided you send all the applicable documentation and pay a service fee (Eish, you wouldn't want to stand in a queue for someone else for free, now would you?). I swear by her, and so do other South African expats! She is quick and effective (dependent on the amount of people in contact with her)! I applied for my South Korean visa through docs4expats and it was accepted within 24hrs!
Writing this has just made me realise how easy it really was. Important! There are certain criterion which you need to check out in order for you to be exempt from Korean taxes. Make sure you are eligible!
1. Must be South African.
2. Must not have earned a salary outside of South Africa for more than 180 days or so (I can't recall the specific number of days).
3. Certificate of proof of residency.
4. Must not be going into a third year of English teaching if you are a foreigner (exapts teaching English in Korea are exempt from Korean tax for a maximum of two years).
I hope this is helpful for any South Africans wanting to teach in South Korea, or any other Asian country.
Cheers, for now!
