Here, I was testing out different drawing styles through quick sketches of the architecture around college.
The original sketch is a blind contour drawing in thick black ink. I developed this project by selecting specific areas to print with bold colours and patterns, collage, drawing thin outlines with an illustrative approach and photocopying in negative.

Development work from the board above: experimenting with bold colours and black & white, layering and drawing experimentally over photocopies of the prints. I was keen to investigate how much developmental work could be produced from a 5 minute sketch and found the number of outcomes surprising.
What fascinated me was how this process felt as if it was naturally veering towards abstraction.

Image of a Large Scale (roughly life size) Life Drawing. I wanted to project a proud lady in her later years. I decided to challenge myself by working on this scale and found it exhilarating and rewarding. I’m interested in developing the theme of movement in my life drawings.

Developing my moving life drawing style in a public exhibition ‘Between the Floors’ at the Courtyard Theatre, Hereford, 2016. Initially, sat on the floor, I was struggling to capture people moving about effectively so I used my initiative to create a drawing machine on site which would enable me to gain a better view of my subjects.

Juxtaposition Project
My main focus was to test ideas in a more conceptual manner, to push my boundaries in a medium I’m not naturally drawn to and to engage more in creative thinking than doing.

An illustration of my Art Room at home. I tried making quick marks/ scribbles to capture both the key objects in the room and the atmosphere created. This is a happy, creative place for me to go to.

A study of my brother and his girlfriend, influenced by Picasso and his abstract style. I like the simplicity of this drawing and how I’ve been able to capture the emotion using only a few brief lines. Blind Contour Drawing.

Continuous line drawing.
I find I’m different to most people sitting on the bus. They usually spend their time looking down at their phones, where as I try to absorb the atmosphere and my surroundings through sketches/photographs of people and landscapes.

Cabbage study in tone and repetition
Inspired by my late Grandfather’s collection of detailed vegetable and fruit paintings. My favourite being his brightly coloured, oil on canvas cabbage leaf. The main aspect that interested me was the unusual texture of the leaf.

Conceptual study: “Getting into University”. I was initially interested in exploring the cabbage leaf because of its line, form and surface pattern. What fascinated me was how something as simple as a vegetable could initiate so many ideas and concepts. This piece developed into a personal illustration of my interpretation of the University application process: an abstract study of crowds of students all heading for the same goal but in different directions.
