A Sweet Mini Elopement in Queens
elmer & anna’s micro wedding in woodside, queens
shot by danny
What was the best part of having a micro-wedding? Micro weddings are great to keep expectations low and as such, we were able to keep the event safe for everyone and low stress for us. We really focused on just the things we wanted out of the day, and very little else! What advice would you give to couples that are planning a mini wedding? Don't worry about the things that are not happening because it's a small wedding and instead focus on everything that you can have! What was unexpectedly amazing about having a smaller celebration? It was really fun to see how many people still wanted to be a part of the day in non-traditional ways (zoom, messages, cards, etc). It really reminded us of how many people care about us and how many people we care about. Two big highlights of the day were the photographer (obviously!) and the flowers. We worked with Kelsey from Heart & Soil Flowers. She was amazing at capturing the mood of the wedding with the flower arrangements. We kept those flowers alive as long we could after the wedding and really enjoyed seeing them every day after.

Chatham, NY Micro Wedding
ailen & stephan’s wedding in chatham, ny
covid times call for more intimate weddings. and to some couples, it’s all they ever wanted anyways so it ain’t no thing.
Mike shot a wedding at this house a few years back and I was mad jealous, so it was a treat to get to finally get shoot there myself because the architecture is unlike any home I’ve seen on the east coast.
besides the architecture,, one of my favorite parts of stephan & ailens wedding was the painting that her recently passed father had painted. They honored him by setting it up as the focal point of the ceremony alter so he could be right there with them.

They Got Married in a Creek
hilliary + davis’ micro wedding at the
dunnfield creek trail
We were walking to our cars in the parking lot of the Dunnfield Creek Trail at the Delaware Water Gap this past Summer. The year’s days of heat were numbered and the wind was whispering the word “yellow” to each shivering leaf of the forest. Their dress and suit were dripping wet from knee to ankle after eloping in the middle of the creek an hour before. “What are you two gonna do tonight?” I asked as we were parting ways. “Oh, probably grab the guitar and sing some songs around the fire together while we polish off a few bottles of Champagne,” Davis replied. They could have done a zillion vanilla renditions of what Pinterest or Instagram told them what an elopement should be. But they consulted themselves, and chose a place that was near and dear to them making the day uniquely theirs. Congrats you two, and thanks for getting my feet wet.

A Redhook Micro Wedding
Love, Pizza, & Champagne is all you really need
nicole & andrew had an intimate ceremony on pier 44 in Redhook, Brooklyn. With Lady Liberty in the background as a socially distant guest, holding her flame up high, Nicole walked down the piers’ aisle to the song “Maps” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs via an 80s boombox (be still my heart).
After the celebratory hugs, we cabbed over to bed-stuy to their home, a recently purchased fixer-upper brownstone gem, perfectly weathered and slightly abandoned by its previous owners, or from sitting on the market for too long. either way, it was full of vintage soul that you cannot buy, and perhaps a little haunted in a good way. to my delight, we climbed the rickety fire escape stairs to their rooftop to take in the sunset & snaps some more pics. it ends on a high note with a casual, cozy, candlelit backyard dinner consisting of the best damn pizza I’ve ever had in Brooklyn & of course…champagne.

Wythe Hotel Mini Wedding
jordana + jacob’s mini wedding at the wythe hotel
The Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn is such a beautiful space and because of its brilliant design and dreamy light-filled rooms, its a photographers’ dream… The terrace loft that these two booked is massively cozy, faces the Manhattan skyline, and fits a small crew comfortably - perfect for mini weddings and elopements.

Harlem Backyard Elopement
lana + mel’s backyard elopement
// shot by danny //
why did you choose to have a mini-wedding?
lana: i think the pandemic helped us realize that we can't take things for granted, so we knew that we wanted to get married sooner rather than later; and we also wanted to share the moment with our friends and family. so having an intimate backyard wedding, which we live-streamed on youtube with a short zoom reception, was the best of both worlds.
mel: we never wanted a big wedding, so we got to have a small wedding and bring people together at the same time. we have friends and family all over the world and it was actually an opportunity to bring more people together to celebrate our big day than we could've otherwise.
what was your favorite memory of the day?
lana: oooh, it's so hard to pick! I'm not just saying this because this for your blog, but one of my favorite moments was our pre-ceremony photo session in the neighborhood. it was fun to walk around in our wedding outfits and we got so many warm wishes and congratulations from neighbors and strangers on the street. my other favorite moment was hearing mel's vows, which were a perfect combination of sweet, funny, and heartwarming.
mel: when lana made her entrance, walking down the stairs holding her bouquet, she looked so happy and beautiful. and i think any nervousness or worry for the day went away when i saw that.
would you have done anything differently?
lana: this is a very technical detail - but we were debating having a microphone and decided against it, but that would've been worthwhile. we had a wedding band play in the backyard as the "opening act" to our wedding (which was awesome) but the video sound adjusted to the high volume of the music. so everything after that sounded quiet to the folks watching from home. not the end of the world but they missed out on some of the beautiful details of the ceremony.
mel: i thought it was the perfect day. the one thing was the video sound could've been better, but overall the wedding was beyond what i could've expected.
what advice would you give to couples that are doing a mini or micro wedding?
lana: having a pandemic wedding is actually really liberating. we didn't have to deal with a lot of the typical wedding frivolity and drama and got to be really creative with it. it's kind of the perfect excuse (if you need one) to have a wedding on your own terms without the expectations of what a wedding 'should' be. (plus you can save more $ for your honeymoon :))

New Hamphire Backyard Wedding
Mike & Meghans Grafton New Hampshire Backyard Wedding
// shot by Chellise & Mike //
What prompted you for an at-home wedding instead of a venue?
I had the experience of doing these music festivals with my family at our house, called "Bingstock" after my dad, and those were always these amazing three day weekend affairs with great music and great people so we knew my parents place sort of worked as a venue. For Meghan, she didn't want to feel constricted to preferred vendors or other things, so this allowed us to really make it our own! I think obviously having it in bum fuck New Hampshire created a restriction of vendors, lol, but overall it really let us and our personalities and our families shine. The house and property meant a real lot to me personally too, beyond Bingstock, as we lost our house when I was 4 in a bankruptcy, so the house represented a sort of overcoming of hardship that I think is really meaningful and important too.
Was there anything you would have done differently?
Maybe drank slower?! Hahahaha. On the real, a videographer I think would have actually been great. A lot of moments will have to live in memory, which is fine as someone that recognizes the impermanence of everything, but would have been nice to have a few moments in video for us to laugh at and cry over like the saps that we are. We also would have leaned heavier on the wedding planner; a lot of stuff was scrambling at the last minute/day of which could have been avoided with more careful and in depth instruction. But he, first and hopefully last wedding we plan so live and learn.
What was your favorite part of the day?
My personal favorite was when everyone went and sat in the tent for dinner and you pulled us aside to take photos before we got intro'd. It was totally spontaneous, but everyone at the tables started popping the prosecco bottles and the tent looked like a bag of popcorn burst and corks were flying out of the sides as we were waiting. It was just such a magnificent moment and that kind of thing is something you can't script. Meghan agrees!
