Engaging Artists as Part of Art Conservation
An experienced investment professional, Bruce Randall “Randy” Watts Jr. is the former Senior Managing Director of The Boston Company. Mr. Watts is a graduate in American Studies from the University of Virginia. Beyond his professional activities, Brice Randall Watts Jr. sits on the Film and Video Committee at the Whitney Museum of American Art. The Whitney Museum showcases both 20th-century and contemporary American art. Its Conservation Department is tasked with preserving the museum’s collections. Through the Artists Documentation Program (ADP), conservators interview various artists, accompanied by their works, to gain a better understanding of their artistic process. Conceived by conservator Carol Mancusi-Ungaro, the program addresses challenges faced by conservators in collecting key information about art works, especially after an artist’s death. The goal is to gather information about the artist’s materials, techniques, and intention by direct engagement and consultation with the artist where possible. The ADP creates an information library detailing how artists perceive restoration and exhibition of their work, which can serve as their “living will.”

Thomas Jefferson and the Establishment of the University of Virginia

Bruce Randall Watts, Jr., holds the Chartered Financial Analyst credential from the CFA Institute. Before beginning his career, Bruce Randall Watts, Jr., earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia. The University of Virginia (UVA) was established by Thomas Jefferson with the mission of preparing students to govern and lead the young nation that he had helped to found. Jefferson developed ideas for the university as early as the 1770s, but it was not until after he completed his second term as president in 1809 that he began drafting specific plans. In 1814, while serving on the Board of Trustees of Albemarle Academy, he shared his detailed plans with his nephew. Two years later, the Virginia General Assembly revised the charter of the aforementioned academy to establish Central College, a regional school. Following Jefferson being elected as rector, as well as his designing the grounds and helping to select the site, building on Central College began in 1817. Jefferson, however, wished for Virginia to have a state university. His efforts, which were aided greatly by Virginia politician Joseph Cabell, culminated in the General Assembly approving the creation of UVA in 1818 and selecting Central College as its site in 1819. With Jefferson as rector, the university underwent construction for the next several years before officially opening its doors to students in 1825. By the end of that year, it welcomed over 100 students.
