What we really admire about Filipinos is their love for food. While it’s true that we, Filipinos, spend most of the time sitting on our office chair working from dusk till dawn, reading the same books all over again in preparation for more pressure to come, we still simply live for the pleasure of eating. Therefore, it is impossible to die of hunger in the Philippines. In our observation, it seems like eating becomes a top stress reliever for most students. Regardless of their allowance, as long as their “cravings” are satisfied, then, that’s it for the day. Same true goes to what food lovers always say, “hindi na talaga ako gagastos, last na yung kahapon.”, then a few moments later, “last na talaga ‘to.” For food lovers, one factor that they look into foods is the price. Of course, we need to eat to live but we also try to lessen our expenses for the next meals. Of all food stalls, there is this one franchise that has a long list for orders, jam-packed with customers at any time of the day, and very affordable foods and drinks to try. Even before this franchise few steps away from our school opened, it was the talk of the town at some time of the day because of its good food and service they render. And so, let’s find more about this food the people’s stomach growling for.
Dimsum panda, a fast food stand that you can find in almost every city in the Philippines. The combo siomai and rice has always been a favorite meal for almost all of the people especially students and millenials beacause you can eat it may it be for breakfast, lunch and even dinner. Aside from its affordable price, the taste is also worth eating. You can choose between fried siomai or steamed siomai. It is inclusive of java rice, chili garlic paste and soy sauce. The siomai however sometimes is not cooked well. Sometimes its overcooked and sometimes its undercooked. The fried siomai when overcooked is so hard to eat and the texture makes you loss an appetite because of it's burnt color. Although it only happens few times. Nonetheless, the taste is good most of the time. The siomai is juicy and the chili garlic paste makes it more savory. It is indeed "swak na swak para sa mga estudyante".
The food packaging method is very simple depending on what kind of siomai you ordered if its a regular steamed or fried siomai, they will serve you with 4 pieces of siomai on a paper plate with a soy sauce and chili oil. you can also add a rice to your choice of siomai, which also changes the paper plate that contains the food, it expands into paper boxes. These boxes are environment friendly and easy to dispose. But inspite of that the container of the soy sauce and chili sauce were plastics and we all know that it is very hard to dispose of plastics
This is such an easy recipe and it’s very delicious too. All you need to do is combine the ground pork or beef, onion, spring onions, carrots, Knorr Pork Cubes or Knorr Beef Cubes, sesame oil, egg and pepper in a bowl. Mix this well and prepare to assemble. With the index finger and thumb touching together, place the wonton wrapper on top. Place a spoonful of the mixture in the center and push the filling down to create a pouch then leave the top open. Do the same with the remaining mixture. Cook in a steamer lined with wax paper (bake paper or aluminium foil will do) for 20-30 minutes or until cooked through. Now, here comes the best part! When you allow the siomai to cool down, deep-fry in pre-heated oil until crisp and brown. Easy as pie.
What we eat makes us what we are. While gloriously savouring in delicious fried or steamed food in the streets or food carts would be cheap, a word of caution: too much of these are susceptible for causing stomach problems. Ensure ourselves that we watch how the vendor would prepare our food. It is especially important to observe, our food intake as well as sanity. Nevertheless, the best way to enjoy food is to bring friends with you.
