INDEPENDENT EXPLORATION ASSIGNMENT - Barneys
Part 1 | Research: Barneys New York is a luxury retailer that offers a variety of designer brands for men and women. Barneys is popular for having holiday extravaganzas, creative advertising campaigns, and top-notch window displays. Barneys (aka Barney鈥檚) was originally a men鈥檚 discount clothing store on 7th avenue, created by Barney Pressman. In the 1960s, with the help of Pressman鈥檚 son, Barneys transitioned to a luxury retailer and the desire for men鈥檚 designer clothing was created. Barneys target women and men in the upper class with a high disposable income and in interest in staying current with the trends.
Part 2 | Observations: This was my first time in Barneys and it was definitely a neat experience. I really enjoyed the seating areas and floor set up of the store. Each floor had a different set a furniture that created a new experience related to the collections show on that floor. My favorite men鈥檚 collections were Loewe and Saint Laurent. We actually were not aware we were looking in the men鈥檚 department when we saw these brands. The colors, patterns, and silhouettes were so universal we fell in love with a lot of the pieces. Some of my favorite collections for women were Rick Owens, Alaia, Blaze Milano, Chloe, and Celine. We visited the Rick Owens exhibit in Milan last semester so it was neat to see his designs in a retail setting. I really liked the colors and patterns used in the Alaia and Blaze Milano collections. Blaze Milano had a line of jackets and blazers that has patterns such as zebras, plaid, and vintage floral that I thought were very different. I absolutely loved the Chloe collection. It was very classic with a nude color palette which I think it so sophisticated and trendy. I also liked one of the lines by Celine. It has a military vibe that I am obsessed with and it is always interesting to see a popular trend depicted across different budget lines.
Part 3 | Weekly Question(s): I was a little disappointed in the Zac Posen collection. He is one of my favorite designers when it comes to red carpet looks but I was not too impressed with his RTW collection. Some of the silhouettes look really unflattering and the color palette he used was not at all appealing. Moncler was a brand that I was not familiar with but found to be really interesting. They had a collection of winter coats that were so cute (sadly above my price range) and trendy. 聽A lot of the coats were puffy jackets but in bright colors or black with a floral print. My favorite piece was a long dress-like vest puffy jacket. It was black with purple and pink flowers and looked so comfy and perfect for the cold weather to wear over a dress. Overall, I enjoyed the chance to visit Barneys and found the experience to be helpful. It was interest to note the quality and design of a garment compared to the price, which in some cases was very shocking. It is always interesting to see a simple design what does not cost much to produced sold for a really high price because of the label.
