Big Time Rush Season 2, Episode 2: “Big Time Fans"
Highlights: Lots of property damage, the return of a "Big Time Audition" character, and identity theft!
We begin in Rocque Records, where the guys are waiting very eagerly for something.
Fan mail!!!
They're very excited. Logan even receives a meatloaf via mail, which is incredibly normal.
The lure of said meatloaf (and subsequent guaranteed food poisoning) is so powerful that Logan and Carlos get into a physical altercation over it.
Kendall wants to send his fan their requested photo, a response that swiftly earns the guys a lesson in "Fan Mail Dos and Don'ts"
All good tips, honestly.
Gustavo goes through each point, telling them to never give out personal info or advice, lest some crazed fan show up at their door and beg for help becoming famous. He and Kelly are then promptly hit in the head by the blackboard. And who just knocked it over?
It's Jenny! Their friend who was carried out of the building by security guards in "Big Time Audition." We have not heard of or seen this girl since that moment, so the guys are understandably baffled.
Turns out Carlos sent Jenny an autographed picture and a note saying that if she comes to L.A., they'll help make her famous. He also included a map and directions to Rocque Records. What a sweetheart. The rest of the guys are pretty upset, as they've apparently emphasized many times to Carlos the importance of not making promises he can't keep. There's also the fact that Jenny is a major klutz and brings destruction everywhere she goes. James is particularly anxious about the prospect of subjecting themselves to the inevitable chaos, but, of course, nobody can resist Carlos's pouting. Also, Kendall delivers a quick, little pep talk to help persuade them.
They all agree to help Jenny out and bring her to the Palm Woods, and we learn that James's wariness about Jenny is completely valid. Apparently, she's broken his arm, given him a papercut that he needed surgery for, and burned all his hair off during science class. So, his nervous grimace as they enter the lobby makes sense.
Btw, there's also a B plot that involves Gustavo and Kelly attempting to fix a thermostat that Jenny broke. And they need to do it quickly because "Death Smash" (the world's most destructive band) has rented out the studio and threaten to smash up Rocque Records if things aren't resolved soon.
They're in big trouble.
Over at the Palm Woods pool, James is approached by an excited young fan who wants to learn the Art of Being Awesome. James, who has apparently had all the tips on fan interaction wiped from his brain in a matter of hours, agrees to mentor the kid. Katie comes by and warns him to be careful. He won't.
Also, I remember loving James and Katie's relationship during the series. Seeing that little glimpse of it here is nice.
We move into 2J then, where Logan, Kendall, and Carlos are strategizing how to locate a band willing to hire a singer who can't make toast without being catapulted through a wall. They're feeling pretty pessimistic, but Logan has a possible solution.
You know what? As extreme a response as it seems, Logan is absolutely the one most likely to snap first under pressure.
Kendall shoots the idea down and delivers his second pep talk, assuring his friends that they can do this.
(also, I'm loving the purple on Logan and Carlos. very nice)
At the Palm Woods gym, James and his mini me are working out.
Katie is there too, getting some boxing practice in (love that), and she tries again to warn James to be more careful. It's in one ear and out the other, though, since James has convinced himself that Katie merely has a major crush on him and is following him around. Seeing as her words aren't working, she resorts to a good punch in the gut.
Oh, and this isn't really related to anything, but I've always thought about how James and Katie are the ones who look like brother and sister in the show. If I didn't know anything about the show and was just shown a picture of the cast, I'd definitely assume they were the siblings. Kendall and Katie don't look related at all. (shout out to the "Kendall and Katie were adopted" headcanon that I've always found interesting to ponder)
Rocque Records is now a wind tunnel.
I'm 100% convinced that nobody in the BTR universe can ever have anything even remotely resembling a normal day.
This is a theory further strengthened by the way James's plot is developing.
His new little buddy hits him over the head with a frying pan and kidnaps him. And for the life of me, I cannot fathom how the kid managed to do it. Maybe he threw it?? There's no way he was able to reach high enough to actually whack James in the head.
Anyway, Kendall and Carlos have reached the end of the road in being able to help Jenny. Camille then comes by and suggests they look into international bands. The guys are overjoyed that they might be able to both fulfill their promise AND keep Jenny far away from them.
James is in a dog cage. His number 1 fan has devised a plan to take his place in the band and has also put together a very convincing story as to where James has gone.
Jenny's audition for the agents doesn't go well. We cut from her about to strum a guitar to Ted Garcia informing people of an explosion that injured several international talent agents.
And guess who saves James from the dog cage? Katie, obviously. They share a sweet hug.
Love James's emphatic, "He was so tiny and evil!"
Katie asks James to give her an "autograph", but since he's an airhead and doesn't pay attention to anything, he actually signs an agreement giving Katie the authority to become his manager when he goes solo, endorse a line of haircare products, and there's also something in there in which he acknowledges that she DOES NOT have a crush on him.
I paused the episode in the hopes the document would actually outline all these things, but it's just a standard lease agreement (with the words HAIR CARE thrown in at the bottom).
We go back to Rocque Records, where Logan, having been recruited by Gustavo, fixes the wonky A/C. It also sucks the lead singer of Death Smash into the vent system and tosses him outside in a dumpster. Logan, Kelly, and Gustavo prepare for their demise, but it turns out the other two members hated the guy. They share their complaints.
When I tell you that I busted out laughing at this scene. I'd totally forgotten about it. The dude was forced to speak with a fake British accent!!
Sadly, their tour is going to have to be cancelled unless they can find a replacement singer who's "super destructive."
Jenny Tinkler then falls through the ceiling. Welcome to "Death Smash," Jenny!! Yayy, the boys get to fulfill their promise!
Carlos promises to never over-promise again. Two seconds later, another old classmate of theirs, Buddy Simmons walks in, announcing how Carlos had promised to help make him a famous Jazz tuba player. The episode ends there.
This is a really fun one. I was surprised at how often I was laughing out loud, totally caught off guard by a joke that I'd forgotten about. There's also that scene toward the beginning, where the guys are lecturing Carlos about the promise to Jenny, where Carlos asks, "Is the bad stuff over?" that gave me whiplash because I have SUCH a clear memory of that line being in the previews on Nick for the episode. I remember seeing that commercial for the episode probably a dozen times, so that line brought it all back.
I do wish we had seen Jenny again after this episode. She's a fun character, and I'd love to know more about the dynamic between her and the guys. Carlos mentions they'd been friends with her since Kindergarten, which is cute. Although, it also raises some questions timeline-wise in regards to when they all met. I know there's that episode where Kendall says he met James in kindergarten, and James gets all upset and specifies that it was someone's 5th birthday party. Which would be kindergarten, or preschool even, so I suppose that checks out. Logan joined them in third grade (?), and I don't think we get details on Carlos. So...I dunno.
Anyway, I hope Jenny had a successful career and kept in touch with the guys. I also wonder what happened to the kid who trapped James in the basement. Like, were the authorities called or...? I'm sure it was all brushed off and immediately forgotten about, as are all the absurd happenings in the BTR world.
I just realized Mama Knight was nowhere in this episode. I can imagine her getting home later, seeing all the destruction in 2J, and having a very interesting discussion with her boys about how their day went.
Kendall pep talks: 2 in this episode!

Big Time Rush Season 2, Episode 1: “Welcome Back, Big Time"
BTR is back! And so am I! (after my very long hiatus)
Highlights: The band returns from tour and immediately starts having a very bad time for various reasons. Plus, the introduction of a new (beloved) character.
Last we left off, the guys were about to embark on their first ever tour. We pick up this episode just as the tour is wrapping up and the group makes their triumphant return to the Palm Woods. Unfortunately, they receive a less than enthusiastic welcome.
Add in some Solo cups to the scene, and you basically get this meme
Bitters informs them that there's a new crop of Palm Woods residents—bright eyed and full to the brim with dreams of stardom.
The guys then learn a few other interesting pieces of news. They've got one day to complete 3 weeks' worth of missed school assignments, AND it appears that Jo has found a new boyfriend.
Kendall handles it very well.
We then move into apartment 2J, where 3 different plotlines quickly emerge. James and Carlos want to focus on rebuilding their Palm Woods cred, Logan's priority is the mountain of schoolwork due the next day, and Kendall has become incapacitated by Jo's betrayal.
Mama Knight mentions that she's always liked Jo, and it's not like her to do something like this. She suggests Kendall go and speak with her about it. And, if it does turn out she's cheating, she "always hated her." What a supportive mother.
ALSO! I would be remiss if I didn't focus momentarily on her line, "If you wanna be in a relationship with someone, trust is number one," given the fact that Mr. Knight (according to both fan headcanons and Challen's own comments on the family's situation) had an affair and abandoned the family. I just. I'm sure this is contributing to Kendall's reaction being to fall into complete despair before even thinking to speak to Jo about what's going on.
After spying on and then confronting Jo, Kendall learns she was just studying for a new role with her co-star. Which brings me to...
JETT!! It's Jett Stetson!! I loved this guy; he's sooo ridiculous.
Kendall decides there's no need to feel threatened because he trusts Jo. Kind of. Sort of. Bitters doesn't help by commenting that Jett is way better looking than Kendall is (a sentiment Katie also shares).
Kendall's been home for an hour, and he's already dealt with the stress of potentially being cheated on and has had his looks criticised by both his little sister and the building's manager. He's having a rough day.
Meanwhile, James and Carlos are sitting poolside, trying desperately to regain their status as Kings of the Palm Woods.
Pathetic dorks.
Also, shout-out to James's haircut. It looks so much better this season.
Let's check in on Logan. He and Kelly arrive at the Palm Woods school to complain that there's no way all that work can be done by tomorrow. Ms. Collins claims she was in communication with someone who assured her that all the school stuff was being taken care of. That person was Gustavo, who purposely didn't tell the guys about school because he didn't want them to stress. Besides, he says, there's plenty of time for school now that the tour is over!
Oh.
Yeah, so the guys are performing in Rocktoberfest. Griffin used poison somewhere along the line to get it set up.
Logan has one day to complete all the work.
Over in the James and Carlos plot, the Jennifers try to teach them to be cruel in order to retake their spot in the Palm Woods, but the boys are big ol' softies and can't do it.
Kendall is continuing to have a similarly disappointing day. As he's doing research on Jett, Katie comes by with some bad news. Not only do Jo and Jett kiss in their new show, they do so for FIVE pages. Here is my favorite part from that script.
Here's what it says in case the pic is blurry.
Drake pauses for a moment and almost stops, but he continues to kiss her. He mumbles inside the kiss. DRAKE: Ri, rumve myou. Rachel's eyes open in delight. RACHEL: Ri, rumve myou, roo.
Back to the homework plot! These episodes with multiple plotlines are exhausting to write about 😆
Kelly and Gustavo have helped purchase pre-made projects to submit. They also hired some nerds to do the math work.
I want to see the scenes with the nerds. They look delightful. I especially like how the guy on the right has a second pair of glasses in his pocket.
After being caught by Ms. Collins, Gustavo tries to bribe her with Rocktober tickets. She is not impressed.
Have fun doing three weeks' worth of work for four people, Logie!
Kendall accompanies Jo to the "New Town High" filming and is very mature about the kissing scene.
His delivery of "This isn't root beer!" still gets me after all these years
Over in 2J, Logan is trying to prove watermelons can't make toast.
He's doing a really great job at it.
Back to Kendall! And we'll make it quick. He's all set in the Palm Woods lobby with flowers to apologize to Jo for being a giant doofus. After assuring her that he totally trusts her, he then sees a suspicious text message from Jett on her phone and goes straight back to losing his mind. Jo, understandably, is at her wits' end and basically tells him they're done.
Girl, good for you. Kendall is losing his marbles.
But also. No one is actually helping him to work through this?? Which, like, is because it's a show for kids/teens, but (as always) let's ignore that entirely. Let's be realistic about this for a moment. There is no way Kendall does not have trauma from his father's affair and subsequent abandonment of the family. Now, he's faced with a situation where he genuinely thinks his first-ever love is cheating on him. And all he's gotten is a ten-second pep-talk from his mother, and multiple reminders that he shouldn't trust Jo and that Jett is better looking than him.
So maybe Kendall gets a little bit of a pass for being off his rocker currently.
James and Carlos attempt to cheer him up with the promise of their upcoming party and a new girlfriend. Except nobody cares about their party, and they get their supplies taken from them by the cast of NCSI. They return to 2J dejected and absolutely miserable.
They're promptly grabbed by Logan, who is seemingly near death from like...just a handful of hours of schoolwork. As he's hacking up a lung, he orders the rest of the guys to contribute just a tiny bit to the projects, just so he can put their names on it.
An extremely sad Kendall is tasked with pouring bleach on a plant.
Also, James and Carlos have worn five different outfits in the single day this episode takes place in.
Mama Knight is going to have a lot of laundry to do.
Cut to the next day. Ms. Collins goes over the boys' projects, they all get passing grades, and Rocktoberfest is saved (hooray!). Their popularity is also restored nearly immediately as the other residents find out that BTR is one of the bands performing.
As everyone celebrates, Kendall hangs back to call Jo and apologize for being such a silly, goofy, jealous guy. He also tells her he's going to leave her tickets to the show, though he isn't sure she'll come.
But, of course, it ends on a sweet note.
And that's a wrap on season 2, episode 1! It only took me 9 months to get to :)
This episode is a memorable one for me. I was hyped for season 2 when it came out, and I LOVED "Til I Forget About You." There was a bit too much happening in this one, though. Lots of changing scenes every two seconds.
I know this season is ridiculously long, so I'm a little intimidated by that, but looking forward to it as well. When I was younger, there were a handful of my favorite episodes I'd turn to when I watched the show, and there were others I'd skip or just not see as often. It'll be fun to revisit some of those episodes that aren't as ingrained in my brain.
Kendall pep talks: None. He was too sad :(

Before I move into season 2, I feel I should mention that I kept track of the number of pep talks Kendall gives in season 1. I meant to go back into my episode posts and include them but never got around to it. But it's something I'll be counting moving forward in the series just for funsies.
He gives 15 pep talks, btw. The episodes with the highest amounts are Audition (4), Blogger (2), and Concert (2).
Honestly, I was surprised the count wasn't higher.

Hey, so...it's been a while, huh? Sorry for dropping off the face of the earth.
Wanted to let everyone know that I hadn't abandoned the blog. I actually have been dealing with a lot of health issues for the past 6 or so months that really took a toll on me emotionally and physically, and I just wasn't in the headspace to focus any time on this blog. Instead, I was going to doctors, getting tests done, trying different meds, etc. Fun times.
But! I've been doing better these last few weeks and started thinking about picking this blog back up again. I already have s2 ep1 written up and ready to go, and I hope to continue my rewatch and posts on at least a somewhat regular basis.
Anyway, hello again!

Can anyone help me out in piecing together whatever semblance of a canon timeline there is regarding when each of the guys met and how? I've been thinking of maybe writing another fic at some point, and while I don't have a solid idea nailed down, I just think it'd help to have that background info. I perused the BTR Wiki but it's honestly kind of a jumbled mess lol.
I do remember that James and Kendall met at a birthday party when they were 5. Not sure if it's ever mentioned when Carlos joined the group. And I think there's an episode that touches on when they met Logan. It was when they were a little older? Didn't they originally bully him or something? Will gladly take any and all info gathered either through the series or widely accepted headcanons.
#big time rush#btr#miscellaneous#the only piece of childhood lore that I absolutely reject is Logan's name originally being Hortense#I just cannot deal with that one#so I headcanon it away by assuming it's an inside joke they all made up because of how ridiculously controlling James's mom is#like they were all sitting around when they were younger after Brooke had said or done something wild and went#''she'd probably make one of us change our names if she didn't like it!''#and they just picked Logan and wove this whole story that became a running joke

You really do catch a lot of tiny, blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments when you go through episodes of a show multiple times during a rewatch.
In "Big Time Terror" there's this little exchange that clearly isn't meant to be part of the scene where Gustavo says this line, and then Logan immediately turns to look at Kendall with this smile and suppressed chuckle while Carlos delivers his line. And then when the shot widens to include Kendall and James, they also seem to be amused about something.
And now I want to know what was going on that we couldn't see in that first part where Kendall and James weren't in the shot.
#big time rush#btr#btr gifsets#miscellaneous#btr season 1#like you can see the moment Logan catches himself and holds in a laugh
