Dividing finances had been a point of the past and Jules preferred to keep it that way. But if it would mean that Jack having to work himself too much to support the children... That was the last thing that she wanted. They deserved the time together, not the money.
A smile was on Jules' lips when her ex promised he would take care of himself a bit more. "Thank you." They were not together anymore, but that didn't mean that she didn't want him to be well. They hadn't split in a fight, so why would she treat him badly.
The woman looked over her shoulder to the house where their daughter had disappeared and nodded. "I will tell her, but I would say to call her tomorrow anyways. I am not sure how long she's going to be stubborn like this." That was a result of her family's genes, she was sure about that.
Her gaze moved back to Jack once more. For a moment she stayed quiet before asking the question that had been bothering her for a while now. "Are you okay, Jack? Are you happy?"
Tumblr media
Jack felt an instant and fair amount of shame at Jules' rebuttal, to which he shook his head. "That's not what I meant. I shouldn't have even taken it there. That's your money, to live your life with. I don't have any qualms about how we decided finances." To Jack, the time Jules had given to raising their family was priceless, he couldn't imagine opening up the conversation about shared finances. It still felt like a reasonable expectation that Jack maintain the lifestyle everyone had been used to living, in the house they'd been living in, until Lily was in college, at a minimum. He still loved this house, memorized every inch of it, had entrenched memories filling every room of it.
"Okay." He murmured, acquiescing. "I will try to make things a little more manageable. For everyone." Jack couldn't argue with Jules, because ultimately, he knew she was right. And because, quite frankly, he never wanted to be parked in the driveway having this kind of conversation ever again.
"Would you ask Lily to call me later, when she's cooled off? I have a feeling she's got my texts on do not disturb, so..." Jack smiled meekly, another soft sigh slipping through his nostrils. "I'd like to apologize her when she's in a more... receptive mood."

Jules: Those middle school days are far and far behind me, and I want to keep it that way. Jules: You know what... You are right. Just throw it out there and risk it all. Jules: End up with hurt feelings more than anything else but you grew a bit tougher over that.
Henry: Nothing I want to be a part of Henry: Oh, I know I'm too old for this. It makes me feel like Im in middle school in the worst way Henry: To be fair, the only cafe I ever go to is the one at work, but, still - I get your point Henry: I miss the old school approach to romance - if you liked someone, you had to put it all on the line to their face

Jules knew that she didn't have any right to tell Jack off about it all. It was clear that he knew he had screwed up. But all she could think about was the girl who had marched into the house because of her father. She softly bit her lip to stop herself from saying something more.
"Last time I checked Jack, I still have a store of my own and I am able to support the children as well, partly." She would never make as much as he did but she could help. They were lucky that Nick was close to making it to college with a scholarship, because that meant that the burden on Jack would lower as well. "Is that something we can talk about?"
Jules nodded to agree upon the plan for next Monday. That would work. And he was right; the car Nick owned was coming with him to California. A full on road trip to the other side of the country was the plan with his friends who had gotten into universities in that part of the country as well.
As soon as the word perfect fell from Jack's lips, Jules started shaking her head. She moved off the porch so she could get closer to him. Talking softer so not everyone would have to hear their conversation. "I'm far from perfect Jack, you and I both know that. They just miss you because you are not around every day anymore. And getting into more and more work isn't going to help either with that." She paused for a second, tilting her head slightly as she watched the man in front of her. "Just promise me that you will make some time for yourself. You deserve it, with or without the children around."
Jack shook his head, soft sigh shooting out of his nose as he did so. "Save the brow-beating, Jules. Honestly. Do you really think I'm particularly proud of the fact I let her down? Do you think I enjoy being looked down at by you? I didn't ask for it, and I don't need it." He could feel the insecurity rising in his chest, the fear that he wasn't meeting the mark, a sensation that had only been introduced into his nervous system following their divorce. Before it, he'd never questioned himself or his contributions to the family. Now, he doubted himself constantly.
"How do you expect me to support two households? How do you expect me to support two tuitions to Huron Academy? I have to work. Sometimes I have to cover other peoples shifts. Why? So I can get them to cover mine so I don't miss out on something else for the kids. I show up for them the best I can." Jack caught himself, the tone of voice, the mounting frustration, and as he paused to gather himself, his gaze lifted up to the house behind Jules, the one they had built together.
"I can pick her up from school next Monday and take her out driving then." Jack's left hand raised to rub his temple, shifting after a moment to rub behind his ear as he thought about next steps. "Why don't you meet us after, and we can take a swing by the used car lot. I've got my eye on a couple that might work for her. It's not like her and Nick can share a car come next fall."
Jack's gaze fell to his feet, knowing he needed to say more, but struggling to summon the words. "You're —" He let out another sigh. "You're not wrong. I know that you're not wrong. It's just difficult for me to hear it from you. To them... you're perfect. And I can't ever measure up to you."

Her calling. It was great to see people end up in the place where they belonged. If that was possible in life, you were very lucky. "Do you ever want to be a mother yourself?" She asked the other woman. She knew that could be a very personal question, Mar was more than welcome to not answer it, of course, if she didn't want to.
Jules looked at the book she had just put away once more before shrugging. "I like too many genres, that's my downfall. But I will always return to books that have a historic touch to it. And European based for some reason, it's fun to discover the world like that if you don't get out there yourself." One day she wanted to visit Europe, a roadtrip. Once the children were older and not living under her roof anymore, that was a goal for her. She loved taking care of them, but one had to have dreams that were just for oneself.
The woman scrunched her nose when asked what she thought about her son moving to the other side of the country. "I'm not too pleased about it but he needs to grow in the end. I would visit him all the time if it were possible but I don't think he will be too happy about it." No one wanted their mother around in college, she hadn't wanted her father around either.
"Lily likes to think she's a singer, but she is not. She is actually a pretty good piano player, so I think that is going to be the way to go." Unfortunately for the rest of the family, Lily did enjoy singing a lot despite the fact that she was unable to keep tone.
"What's up with you? Outside of teaching I mean."
Mar's whole face brightened when Jules Buckley (it was hard to think of her just by first name, but first and last felt more appropriate) paid her the compliment. "I do love them a lot," she said, repressing the urge to gush. "Even when they start to drive me up a wall, they do something so funny or cute that I can't be mad. It's definitely my calling." There had been a time, when she'd lived with Henry and thought the future stretched out ahead of them for decades, when she'd considered what her children might be like. And then, after numerous medical procedures and treatment and reassessing her health, having children felt almost untenable. Being able to be around children and work with them every day filled what she worried might have been a void in her life.
"What do you enjoy reading?" she asked, curious. "I am probably not the right person to help you stay on task, I always end up with more books than I planned on. I always support picking up a book that catches your eye." Maybe it was a bit of enabling to encourage someone to pick up more than they came in for, but reading was at least beneficial for the reader.
Jules Buckley's announcement that her son was off to college reminded Mar how quickly time went by whether she paid attention to it or not. "Congratulations to him!" she said cheerfully. "How do you feel about him off to California? Are you going to make a visit out there?" It felt like only yesterday that she had been off to college, and now she was watching others grow up and embark into the world. "That's good to hear about Lily! Does she have a favorite instrument, or is she a singer?"

Jules raised her eyebrows at the joke her ex-husband was attempting. Because attempting was definitely the keyword in that sentence. She didn't find anything about this situation funny.
The woman knew that his job was important. She knew that he lived for it and that it was needed too. If Jack had good days at work, it meant that many people could be saved and she was still proud as hell regarding that. Because it had taken a lot of work to get to the place where they were now.
But all of that moved to the background slightly when he forgot the most important thing in his life; his children.
"I know schedules are tough, Jack. I know that you have your work. But I thought we promised that the children would never be the victim of those schedules that we have to align." Nick and Lily would always come first, no matter how hectic their family situation or working lives were.
Tumblr media
Jules leaned against the railing of the porch, looking at the man who had been hers for so many times. It wasn't that she didn't love him anymore. She still loved him. But it just didn't work any more with the both of them. They both agreed on that.
"Working over sixty hours a week is not a good thing, Jack. You need more time for yourself. And for the children. When are you rescheduling this?" The best answer she was hoping to get now, was a simple tomorrow but Jules had a feeling that was not going to happen.
Jack ran a hand through his hair, grimace meeting his lips as Jules chastised him. "She's young, she'll get over it." He tried to joke, knowing that, inevitably, it was his screw up. And while Jack didn't often mess up when it came to his kids, he knew that lately, he'd not been all that impressive in the dad department. "Oh, come on, h—" Honey. The word had nearly passed his lips before he caught himself, quickly course correcting. "I didn't realize, okay? I worked a twelve hour shift, I'm over sixty hours for the week. It slipped my mind. All I can do is apologize and reschedule with her."
This was the part that Jack loathed — they were still a team, but no longer a united front. "I'm trying my best, Jules. You and I both know the schedules are harder than ever." To Jack, Jules had always been SuperMom, it was one of things he'd always loved most about her. Their early family like had been chaotic, and fun, and exhausting, and through it all, Jules had been their constant — his constant. Jules had been and always would be the True North for their family unit. So when he screwed up, it was all the more worse when having to come face-to-face with the parent who could do not wrong.
He knew that in the wake of their divorce, Jules had covered for him plenty, excusing and explaining away Jack pouring himself more and more into his career. His job had been an easy crutch in the two years since their split, and unfortunately, Jack's eagerness to have no time to himself sometimes conflicted with his kids schedules. Jack let out another soft sigh, arms folding over his chest. "Lil already beat me up plenty. I don't need it from you, too."

No matter how hard Jules tried to keep the expression of compassion off her face at the fact that the marriage of her friend didn't seem to be going that well, she was failing at it. She knew how it was, it wasn't an easy situation. No matter what age you had to navigate through life and things like this.
So in the end, all Jules did was nod to agree upon the roses, making a note for that for the next bouquet.
"Please remember me how great it is that both Nick and Lily are doing great when you visit me after Nick has left for California." That was going to be a very hard time and sharing it with the one person who understood exactly how it felt - her ex-husband - didn't seem to be possible. So she was going to need the help of her friends in that regard for sure.
Tumblr media
It had been quite some time since Jules had had both Hannah and Gabriel over for a dinner with the family, and it seemed like it was going to take a bit longer again for a next time. "Alright, just Auntie Hannah it is then. Lily will be very happy with that." Lily had always moved in Hannah's direction when it came to 'favoritism'. Nick, however, had been more towards Gabriel.
"How does next Sunday work?"
Roses. They were supposed to symbolize love, passion, romance— all the things a marital bedroom should hold. All the things that felt like they were slipping away.
Not love, maybe. Hannah did love her husband. And he loved her. But there was a chasm between them now, a space that seemed to widen a little more each day. She wasn't sure how much longer she'd be able to reach him from the other side.
She could say all of this to Jules. Spill every thought that pressed against the edges of her mind, the ones she barely let herself acknowledge. The offer was always there. But in the end, she only smiled and agreed.
"Roses would be lovely."
Hannah brushed a hang against the coffee cup in front of her, letting the warmth settle into her fingertips. "It's just the weather," she added easily. "Seasonal depression, or whatever the professionals call it. I'm sure I'll be as good as new once the sun comes out of hiding." A light laugh followed, too smooth, too practiced. A subtle dismissal of anything more serious brewing beneath the surface.
Jules didn't press, moving seamlessly into the topic of her son, and Hannah latched onto it, grateful for the shift.
"A swimming scholarship?" She straightened, tucking her legs beneath her on the bench. "How did I miss this?" Pride filled her chest, genuine and immediate. She had been to more than a few of Nick's meets. She knew he was good. But a full-ride scholarship? That was something else entirely.
"That's amazing, Julies." She meant it. Both of Jules' kids were great— kind, talented, smart. And maybe, once upon a time, Hannah had imagined she'd have equally kind and smart kids of her own by now. But, she let the thought pass, chasing it away as easily as she had every other time.
At the mention of dinner, she lifted a shoulder in a nonchalant shrug. "Uhm, just Auntie Hannah, I think. Gabe's been slammed at the office lately. New case and all." She reached for her coffee again, taking a slow sip. As if that explained everything.

Jules: What the hell are twin flames? Jules: Don't you sometimes think we are too old for this? Jules: What happened to meeting each other at the café on a night out?
Henry: Someone also asked me what my sign was and then told me we couldn't ever end up together because we were "twin flames," which can die out? The more you know! Henry: Mind you, I just asked how their day was Henry: It's not our fault that Hinge has done nothing but disappoint us, Jules Henry: I was advised to try Bumble as well, but I never did, so I can't say I'd have any more success there

When Jules had heard the car pull up front, she had opened up the front door. She had not expected her daughter to march into the house without saying one word. A look of surprise was edged on her face as her gaze followed her daughter. Once Lily had disapppeared from her sight, she turned back to her ex-husband for an explanation of why their daughter was not pleased at all.
She walked further onto the front porch to be able to talk with him and a sigh escaped her when he told her that he had forgotten the driving lessons. "Jack, really?" Ever since the last visit to her father, Lily had been excited about it all. And coming closer to this date, she even got more and more excited. Jules could definitely understand why her daughter was not amused at all.
"It was all she could talk about for days. She has told all of her friends. It is such a little thing to do for your daughter, how can you forget that?"

Jack had always loved his family life. He never dreaded coming home, never avoided the difficult moments or awkward conversations, never thought for a moment that the grass was greener on the other side of the fence. He loved being a husband and father, he enjoyed being depended upon, and, when the kids were little, the eagerness and joy in their faces when he came home after a long shift. No — Jack loved his family. And while that family was different in how it worked in recent history, he and Jules easily coexisted, and coparenting was easy. On the things that mattered most they’d always agreed and had the same point of view, so it was only natural that their co-parenting journey had been seamless.
Still, it was difficult that the kids’ considered home a different place from where he rested his head at night. It would always be 'dad’s apartment', and the dichotomy could not be undone. That was what happened when a marriage ended, time marched on, and this was reality now.
Jack watched as Lily marched inside, not looking back, an easy sense that she wasn't particularly pleased with her father. It didn't seem like he could get anything right, and while he knew some of that was because she was a sixteen year old, it didn't mean there wasn't validity in her frustration with him. He knew better than to chase after her then and there, but, as he was about to climb back into his car, there was Jules. "Hey," He greeted his ex with warmth, always. "She'll be fine." Jack gestured towards the front door Lily had disappeared behind. "I guess I promised to give her some driving lessons this weekend, I forgot, and... Well, I picked up a shift for a colleague, so we have to reschedule."

Hearing her first name come out of the mouth of someone else who had always been a teacher to her daughter was a bit strange, but it was definitely the right thing to do. Jules smiled at the woman when she told her where she had ended up with her job. "I like how you talk about the kids. I think they are lucky to have you as their teacher. No matter the age. Although the better personal hygiene is definitely a bonus."
Her gaze lowered to the book in her hands and then put it back. "I'm actually here to pick up a specific book for her for an assignment but then I got distracted by books of my own interest. You caught me trying to convince myself not to buy a book for myself and I'm not sure yet if I'm failing at it."
Tumblr media
Automatically a smile was on her lips straight away when Mar mentioned her other child. "Yes, Nick. He's nearly done with high school, will be leaving the town for California for college. So there's that. And Lily is very good, she started loving music when she started in your class and she still does."
Lily Buckley had been a part of Mar's very first class in her first year of teaching. It had been fun, and exciting, and stressful at times, and she had figured out her groove and how to optimize teaching her young class of kindergarteners, but it was also unforgettable for those same reasons. Lily had been a sweet girl then, and Mrs. Buckley had been so helpful as a liaison between her and the other parents. Running into her felt like a positive sign from the universe.
"Oh, sure," she responded to the name change, unaware that the woman was no longer married. "Well, it's very good to see you ... Jules." She tested out the name, and tried to see if she still felt too young to be calling someone by their first name.
"I'm teaching second grade now, actually," she replied easily. "It's a nice change. I don't have to remind as many of them to wash their hands, for one. But we'll see how it goes, maybe I'll miss the kinders and go back next year." She was certified to teach elementary age, so she had the freedom to switch grades depending on Huron Academy's staffing needs.
"Looking for something for school or just for recommendations?" Mar asked curiously. She loved working with younger children, but had several other teacher colleagues who taught higher grades and she'd listened as they talked about their curriculum. "How is Lily? And you had another child too, correct?" she asked, vaguely remembering a sibling showing up once or twice at carpool.

A daydate with my besties. Jules was pretty sure that her kids never used those words before. They were a few years older than Leon, of course. "Yeah, Grey, how can you forget a daydate!" The woman laughed as she spoke those words. It was interesting to see the change in language and interaction between every child she encountered. Leon was a good one.
Jules let her gaze move over the market to see the many stalls and agreed with the young man in front of her; the market did seem to get a bit bigger by the week. "Sure, I don't mind you tagging along. That is if you don't mind just wandering about the market. I'm not usually one with a plan, I just walk around and see what I like the most for dinner for the night. Probably not the safest and cheapest way to get away from this market, but it works."
Tumblr media
"Are you searching for anything specific at the market?"
Grey nodded, and grinned as he replaced the packaged treat to it's neat little basket. "Unfortunately, he'll eat just about anything. I think picky is the wrong word. Judgy, maybe? He's a judgy eater." The man laughed, the skin around his dark eyes crinkling. "That kid's schedule is almost as hectic as mine. I don't know how that can be healthy for a 10 year old. He's apparently had a-" his hands rose, fingers forming into air quotes, "'-daydate with my besties' on the books for months now. What do I know?"
Kids certainly didn't come with manuals. Leon was a special person indeed. He was insanely smart, and focused, and if he were being honest, the last year felt an awful lot like Leon taking care of him instead of the other way around.
"... Actually, this market gets bigger every week. That's what I know." He looked back to Jules, his grin reappearing, "Which way are you headed? How do you feel about a tag-a-long?"

Jules: I hear the sarcasm all the way over here, Eaton! Jules: To be honest, I have never really understood the appeal of tarot cards. Jules: Could the reason of us not finding a soulmate on Hinge also be the fact that we have quite some things to say about it?
Henry: Oh, but he looks like such a keeper! Henry: "Search" is a generous term at this point - I definitely will not be finding my soulmate on Hinge, I've decided Henry: I guess I didn't realize so many women were into Tarot cards now - since when is that a thing?

Seeing as Lily couldn't make it to the library that afternoon due to homework that she had to finish, but she also needed the book, Jules had offered to grab the book for her. And of course, she couldn't leave without a book for herself as well.
The redhaired woman was invested in the text on the back of the book in her hand, when a voice suddenly startled her. A familiar voice at that. Jules looked up from the book in her hand and it was there that she saw Miss Rivera. A teacher from Lily back in the day.
"Let's make that Miss Buckley. Or just call me Jules. It's been too long since you've been my kid's teacher," she said with a smile to the other woman, lowering the book in her hand. It really had been too many years since they had spoken last. Last time they had psoken, she hadn't had Bloom even.
"But all good here, I shouldn't be looking at these books as I'm searching for one for my daughter. How have you been, do you still teach at the kindergarten?"

There was something so comforting about the smell of an aging book. Mar looked from side to side down the aisle, checking to make sure no one was looking before she cracked open the historical fiction novel and brought it up to take a whiff. That's the stuff, she thought, before closing it and taking another look at the cover before ultimately deciding it wasn't for her. After everything happened, Mar had struggled with brain fog for months, and no longer could she speed through a book on a Saturday afternoon. It had been frustrating, and taken almost three times as long to finish a novel, but with time came clarity and Mar was finally feeling up to a trek to the library.
Only. Only ... what to read? Nothing really struck her fancy. There were too many options and none felt like the right one.
As she turned a corner into the next aisle, a flash of red hair caught her eye, and Mar paused, wondering why, exactly, the figure looked so familiar. She racked her brain, going through the mental rolodex of everyone she'd ever met, and after a brief moment it clicked into place. "Mrs. Buckley?" called out softly, the memories of her first year of teaching flooding her mind. She mouth quirked upward and she broke out a small smile. "How funny to see you here. How are you?"

Unfortunately, Jules didn't visit the farmer's market as much as she wanted these days. With parenting and mostly the flower shop, some thing had had to go. Going to the farmer's market was one of those things. But whenever she did have the time to do so, she would.
The smell of the many fresh products was calming to the woman. It was all so simple, so many possibilities when it came to the products.
Visiting the farmer's market definitely meant sometimes bumping into familiar faces and Grey was one of those. She looked at the package that he had mentioned and then scrunched her nose. "I have never tried that before, unfortunately so I can't help you there. But I think many things here are okay."
A smile appeared on Jules' face when she once more realised why Grey's home was a 'picky prison'. "Don't you mean picky eaters? Or rather one picky eater? How is Leon, I can imagine he wanted to come with you to the market?"
Tumblr media
WHO: Assume Generic Connections (or dm me)
WHERE: Ann Arbor Farmer's Market, Kerrytown
STATUS: Open
Greyson couldn't remember a period in his life where he'd ever spent so much time (and money) at a farmer's market. If he really wanted to split hairs, he might go as far as to say he'd never spent much time in any market, ever. Leon, though, loved them. He loved all of the curiosities and goods offered by the locals- many of which he knew by being the seasoned ten year old market guru that he was. As his guardian, Grey was just thrilled to find something he could also participate in that didn't make Leon absolutely hate his guts.
Today, Leon couldn't be with him, but had made it a point to stress how imperative it was that Grey grab the Marupo Egg Tarts on his way home. A task not exactly unsuited to the man, but he'd had a hard time keeping a his debit card in check once he'd started to wander the booths at the market. This was made evident by the fact that he'd barely passed by two vendors before veering off to sate his curiosity.
"Have you tried this before?" His fingers smoothed over the front of the small, colorful package, before he snatched it from it's spot for inspection. "My home is a picky prison," he smirked softly, "I don't know what will happen to me if the vanilla is sourced wrong."

❝Where flowers bloom so does hope.❞
julia buckley garcia
Age: 42 Gender & Pronouns: Cisfemale, she/her pronouns Occupation: Owner of Bloom Flower Shop Neighborhood: Eberwhite
biography
divorce tw
Julia Buckley García is the child of an American father and a Cuban mother. They found eachother during holidays in Cuba and after having spent a few years there, they returned back to her father’s hometown. Back to Ann Arbor. Only a few years later their first child was born. Julia - or Jules as everyone would call her - was the first of three children of her mother, the only one for her father. After being together for a year, the parents split up and Julia got to live with her father.
She grew up in close contact with her mother as well, just as her two half-siblings, but her father was her best friend. The two of them were inseparable. During her time in high school, Jules was an ‘average’ student. She got good grades, entered the maths club but stayed out of the spotlight. An exact mirror of the person Jules was becoming; a calm woman, who was kind to people who interacted with her and preferred to stay away from people she didn’t like or found interesting.
After graduation from high school, Jules went to the University of Michigan in her hometown. An accounting study was the destination, despite the fact that she was already sure that it was not something she wanted to do in the future. But she had to choose and this was the easiest way to go.
Maybe it was meant to be - because in deciding that she was going to study accounting, she met the man that was going to be her future husband and the father of her two children. He had only just arrived in Ann Arbor, specifically for studying and they hit it off right away, sitting together during classes and all. They dated and after graduation from university, he proposed. He arrived in Ann Arbor for education but he stayed for love.
After graduation, Jules got pregnant rather quickly. In 2007 their first child, a boy named Nick, was born and in 2010 their second child, a girl named Lily, followed. During those years, she stayed at home mostly as a stay at home mum and only when her father passed away in 2014, Jules decided to pick up work and education once more. She started an economics home study, but now with an aim; Bloom Flower Shop. The old lady who owned the place had always been a friendly face to the Buckley family and she had let them know that she would love to retire in a few years, but that she was worried about the shop. Seeing as the shop had always been a safe place to Jules and later to her family, she knew exactly what to do.
In 2020 the time was finally there; Jules was able to take over as the owner of the Bloom Flower Shop in town and since that day, she’s been enjoying her time of work. It was a pleasant distraction when in 2022 her marriage ended. It wasn’t a messy divorce but the two of them realised that even though they had some great years together, the love between them was gone. So they parted as friends, something that Jules preferred as that was all she knew from her own parents in the end as well.
Jules is now at a point in her life where everything has settled, her children growing up and making decisions on their own futures… It leaves her with the question; what is there left for her in the future?
