Buck didn’t have magic. That's fine, it was. No big deal. It wasn’t like he was the only one at the firehouse who wasn’t a mage. He never made light as a child, he never summoned his toys, he never talked to the wind. When he’d left Hershey, he’d met dozens of mages on his travels, and many, many more non-mages. He’d never really thought about it until he landed at the 118. Hen, Chim and Bobby had explained their powers and asked if he had any. There were others on their shift that didn't have powers like Jonesy, Stevens, Hennessy, and Bobby’s powers weren’t even useful for fighting fires. It wasn’t an issue.

Tommy grins at him and does his best to match the teasing tone. “I might take you up on that.”

But the other man frowns ever so slightly, tilting his head like a confused puppy. Shit, maybe Tommy misread him and the guy always sounds like that. For a long beat they stand in silence, looking at each other, and neither of them seems to know what to do.

“So how did you get the fire under control so quickly?” Tommy finally asks, because he needs to say something to move past this awkward moment.

The cute guy grins at him once again, snaps his fingers and whispers: “Magic.”

"I want to introduce you to Leonardo," Tommy says over dinner, sounding entirely too casual in an attempt to hide the fact that he's feeling not casual at all. Face carefully neutral, but Buck can see the tenseness in his shoulders. The tightness that runs up his spine and holds him in place. Holds him together. "Properly that is, if you'd be interested."

His gaze flicks up to connect with with Buck, eyes wet and gaze softening, casual facade cracking — before looking down at his bowl of stew. Fingers tapping on the spoon, the metal of it clinking against the bowl as he distracts himself with it in an attempt to not lose himself in waiting for Buck's reaction.

Buck can feels his heart in his throat. This is big. This is huge. This is decidedly not a casual thing. This is Tommy taking the next step, one Buck had been daydreaming about but also very carefully not mentioning in fear of moving too fast after their conversation about Tommy needing to take it slow.

Meeting a Dragon Rider's dragon, going through a proper, formal dragon introduction was more important than meeting the parents, than beginning a formal courting, than swearing fealty to someone's liege lord. It was like meeting another part of Tommy's soul, his being. He was being trusted with something important.

You didn't pick your dragon, you couldn't just wake up one day and decide to ride a dragon — they picked you. They picked you, and then you bonded.

Tommy was bonded to Leonardo.

Feels like he stole a hell of a lot more than that, when he slipped out of Buck’s grasp the second time. Like he took a piece of Buck himself, and wasn't even aware of it.
