Gotta say I really appreciate seeing you post anti Eddie Diaz stuff. Like, I'm not in the fandom so I don't know any of the characters beyond what I see people post, but I like seeing people hate on the popular characters, especially when the character is part of a popular ship. I feel like I'm being let in on a secret the fandom won't talk about: this guy sucks actually
I've been meaning to answer this for days, but I have so many thoughts about fandom and popular slash ships. I mean, it is known that fandom tm loooooves to take the two main young & attractive white looking dudes and declare them the otp of a franchise. Doesn't matter if their relationship is toxic or if they're already happily dating a woman or if they have much better chemistry as friends. Happens all the time and in parts I get it because this is a behaviour I think fandom learnt when there were even fewer well written female main characters and almost no queer characters in canon. So you ship your fave with a character that actually has, you know, character and also get some queer fanon at least. Win win situation without having to put in too much work.
But I also think that a lot of times the ships that are created by the formular of "well there has to be a popular slash ship and these two fit all the requirements" are actually kind of terrible. And this does have to do with the fact that quite often one of the guys "sucks actually". Take bbc Sherlock and Johnlock for example. I shipped them in other adaptations, but this specific version of Sherlock is such a huge arsehole. A lot of the "queer subtext" was just stuff that happened behind the scenes or homophobic jokes ("haha, those two act so gay, they get mistaken for a couple all the time and nobody believes them when they deny it and John hates when people imply he's gay, isn't that funny?").
I had similar feelings about Merthur. Those two do have dialogue that can very easily be read as "yeah, these two are queer", but like. They can both be queer without being a couple? Even their friendship is so unbalanced already and that is because Arthur is an entitled brat at the beginning of the series. While he does grow out of the brat part a little bit, he never really shakes off the entitlement part. All this talk about how commoners should be treated fairly, how they don't deserve any less respect just because of the status of their birth, he even marries a commoner because he's too open-minded to care about such trivial details - yet he never tires to remind Merlin that he's only a servant and treats him like shit.
I think what bothers me the most is when fandom latches onto these couples that are somewhat unbalanced or toxic, but they reframe everything as something that's actually sooo romantic. I have absolutely no issues with Destiel for example and a big part of the reason is that we all agree Dean kind of sucks. Like yes, he's an arsehole who doesn't talk about his feelings and takes Cas for granted and has anger issues and in the early seasons is rather sexist. We all agree on that and it's part of why the Destiel dynamic is so interesting. They're supposed to be not normal about each other and Cas is also more than a little messed up. Arthur's behaviour regarding Merlin on the other hand is usually reframed as banter or teasing or just part of their normal routine when it is in fact not normal or healthy to treat a friend that way.
Buddie as a ship specifically worked really well for me in the beginning. Both of them had messy love lives and found comfort and stability with each other, but then around the time season 7 aired they started writing the dynamic differently. Right from the start Eddie was presented as this really proud person who has a hard time admitting his own mistakes and making himself vulnerable, but he was still a good friend to Buck. Buck often shows his love for his friend through "acts of service" [*I don't buy into the whole love language bullshit, but it's a fitting description of Buck's behaviour here] and he helps Eddie out with his son a lot by actually doing something for them - introducing them to a health care worker, babysitting Chris, cooking for them, having some of those difficult conversations with Chris as he grows up, etc. Eddie in return often offered emotional support and a listening ear when Buck needed to vent about this or that. They both messed up here and there, but it was always obvious they cared about each other and spent a lot of time just hanging out because they enjoyed each others company so much.
All of that can simply be a good friendship of course, but it also had all the makings of an intriguing ship. Best friends to lovers trope, all the times they were each other's closest confidant, becoming a family of three with Buck stepping up as a parental figure for Chris, ... It's easy to see why fans love them so much. Besides, all the other characters got settled with their endgame love interest so very early and most of them date either another main character or a very established side character. (Bobby and Athena started dating by the end of season 1, Maddie got together with Chimney in her first season which was the second season overall and Hen and Karen got married pre-canon.) A slow burn romance between two more main characters sounds quite nice in that context.
Outside of his friendship with Buck however, Eddie has always had a tendency to decide that he knows what is the right thing to do and power through no matter what others think and he doesn't ask for their opinions either. Not even when his actions very much affect other people and even hurt them. He didn't talk to his wife at all before re-enlisting with the army and being gone for another 2 years for example. He didn't ask Buck if he was okay with being in Eddie's will as Chris' potential future guardian. We don't know that he asked Chris about it either. Eddie moved to LA with no real plan how to survive and provide for himself and his kid there. He makes these big decisions all the time without getting anybody's input and acts as though his actions never have consequences for other people or if they do it doesn't matter because Eddie is the only main character in his own story.
As I said, in the "early" seasons (2-6) Eddie shows his care for Buck mostly by listening to him. Buck is worried about his sister, he vents to Eddie. Buck gets into a fight with his brother in law, he tells Eddie. Buck's parents show up and treat him like an idiotic child, he rants to Eddie. Buck needs a break from people hovering over him after a near death experience, he goes to Eddie. But somehow they stopped writing these scenes into the show during season 7 while ramping up Buck's acts of service to 11.
Buck once again has a difficult conversation with Eddie's son about treating the people he dates respectfully and figures out that this is all connected to Chris' mom leaving when he was only 4 or 5 years old. Buck gives Eddie relationship advice after Eddie's girlfriend moves in and it doesn't go smoothly. He gives Eddie a reality check when Eddie basically starts cheating on his girlfriend with a woman who could be his dead wife's twin. Buck once again talks to Chris after that situation spectacularly blows up in Eddie's face. He takes over Eddie's lease (giving up his own apartment in the process) because Eddie can't find anyone else to sublet. He later moves out of that place again when Eddie decides he's coming back to LA after all.
Throughout season 7 and 8 Buck is still very much there for Eddie, even when they fight, but has Eddie done anything for Buck in the meantime? I honestly don't remember anything. All the conversations where Buck seemed upset or needed to vent about something were outsourced to take place between Buck and his older sister instead. The only thing I could name right now is that Eddie reacted positively to Buck coming out which I don't think merits special praise and he thanked Buck for saving his ass by taking over the lease. Which is the least Eddie could've done after blowing up at Buck and calling him selfish and egocentric for *reads notes* being upset that his best friend is moving to a different state.
They also had another really bad fight in the wake of their Captain's death who was basically Buck's dad (if not by blood). But apparently Buck is selfish for grieving his dad, too. I don't even know what the fuck that scene was tbh. They implied that Buck was spiralling hard, yet we never see that in the show? Or rather, we see he's having a hard time, but it's only one scene and none of the other main characters are present in it, so how would they know. And somehow Eddie can only speak about details he gets asked about specifically? Buck asking him questions about how he's processing his grief wasn't opening enough for Eddie to talk about how it felt to find out about Bobby's death. He yells and says some really awful stuff and physically gets up in Buck's face. Eddie never apologises for this or their previous fight btw.
All that and Buck getting into a new serious relationship that really had (still has) potential at the same time really turned me away from the Buddie ship. Eddie has always had flaws, but his friendship with Buck seemed solid. That changed after season 6, now Eddie comes across as a very flawed individual who is also a shitty friend on top of everything else. He never apologises for anything, he verbally blows up at Buck at the slightest inconvenience, he never faces any repercussions even when he messes up so so badly (it's always somebody else's fault, maybe Eddie's mom's), the show never frames anything in a way that would suggest Eddie was wrong and needs to face consequences anymore, but a lot of shippers still claim all of this is deeply romantic actually.
The writing in seasons 7 & 8 has led to many disappointments with basically every main character, but I think they ruined Eddie the most. He kind of just sucks now and I can't find any redeeming qualities in his current characterisation.

all millenials have absolute permission to be ~wacky~ bc we are all driven insane by the fact that we were the ONLY generation to have access to certain technologies and we sound fucking crazy trying to explain it to people
everyone before us lived in the pre-digital age.
everyone after us lived in the enshittified post .com era
we and we alone were juuuust aged right for the point in time where we had sick ass gumdrop looking computers and phones of all shapes and sizes and you could go out in the world and be human and imperfect without some chode recording you
fucking hell
shit was free and gmail was, actually, simple and reliable.

“Why do people like a character who’s committed war crimes but hate this other character just because they’re annoying” because it’s fiction Susan, and being annoying in fiction is a greater sin than being a supervillain, because it won’t make me want to read about them. It isn’t difficult to understand
