6/6/18,
   Final Presentation for Exhibition.
I have gone for the coffee table idea to exhibit my magazine. I have also gone with walking boots to hang up to, which adds to the theme of cumbria. I have gone for a painted cup too which is typical to Cumbria as every home in cumbria you go to, you will be offered a brew. I have also bought a bunch of wild flowers from Carlisle market and put it in an old milk jug, to highlight the old and new cumbria. The flowers are also to show that something so beautiful, the flowers, can die, but they're still beautiful dead. This is to show that the old cumbria is still beautiful but it is evolving into something just as beautiful. I also have open maps on my desk to just show the area, in case people aren't so familiar so they can see the vast open space.

Everything’s gone Pete Tong
The company I was using to print my magazine on gloss paper and binded via ring bound, has emailed me saying they can’t do it ! I’m now having to go through a local printer who can’t ringbind or print on gloss. This is a manjor disappointment but I will have to work with it !

Table 2,
I have added a fresh bunch of daffodils to this picture, because it makes it feel like a traditional cumbrian homes coffee table in the living room/kitchen. It also adds more colour and meaning to the table, whilst keeping in line with traditional Cumbrian values. This is my favourite table set up so far.

Idea 1 For Set Up For Exhibition
I have chosen to exhibit on a coffee table. However I didn't want just my magazine, I want to contrast it with older, Cumbrian items. On this particular table I could have a cup of tea, muddy walking boots, my magazine, a copy of Daffodils by William Wordsworth and a physical map of cumbria. However I quite like the idea of having some actual daffodils on the table too.

Poetry to use in my final exhibition by William Wordsworth
1. Daffodil
I wander'd lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host of golden daffodils, Beside the lake, beneath the trees Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretch'd in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced, but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: - A poet could not but be gay In such a jocund company! I gazed - and gazed - but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought.
For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills And dances with the daffodils.
2. A Narow Gridle of Rough Stones and Crags
A narrow girdle of rough stones and crags, A rude and natural causeway, interposed Between the water and a winding slope Of copse and thicket, leaves the eastern shore Of Grasmere safe in its own privacy: And there myself and two beloved Friends, One calm September morning, ere the mist Had altogether yielded to the sun, Sauntered on this retired and difficult way. ----Ill suits the road with one in haste; but we Played with our time; and, as we strolled along, It was our occupation to observe Such objects as the waves had tossed ashore-- Feather, or leaf, or weed, or withered bough, Each on the other heaped, along the line Of the dry wreck. And, in our vacant mood, Not seldom did we stop to watch some tuft Of dandelion seed or thistle's beard, That skimmed the surface of the dead calm lake, Suddenly halting now--a lifeless stand! And starting off again with freak as sudden; In all its sportive wanderings, all the while, Making report of an invisible breeze That was its wings, its chariot, and its horse, Its playmate, rather say, its moving soul. --And often, trifling with a privilege Alike indulged to all, we paused, one now, And now the other, to point out, perchance To pluck, some flower or water-weed, too fair Either to be divided from the place On which it grew, or to be left alone To its own beauty. Many such there are, Fair ferns and flowers, and chiefly that tall fern, So stately, of the queen Osmunda named; Plant lovelier, in its own retired abode On Grasmere's beach, than Naiad by the side Of Grecian brook, or Lady of the Mere, Sole-sitting by the shores of old romance. --So fared we that bright morning: from the fields Meanwhile, a noise was heard, the busy mirth Of reapers, men and women, boys and girls. Delighted much to listen to those sounds, And feeding thus our fancies, we advanced Along the indented shore; when suddenly, Through a thin veil of glittering haze was seen Before us, on a point of jutting land, The tall and upright figure of a Man Attired in peasant's garb, who stood alone, Angling beside the margin of the lake. 'Improvident and reckless,' we exclaimed, 'The Man must be, who thus can lose a day Of the mid harvest, when the labourer's hire Is ample, and some little might be stored Wherewith to cheer him in the winter time.' Thus talking of that Peasant, we approached Close to the spot where with his rod and line He stood alone; whereat he turned his head To greet us--and we saw a Mam worn down By sickness, gaunt and lean, with sunken cheeks And wasted limbs, his legs so long and lean That for my single self I looked at them, Forgetful of the body they sustained.-- Too weak to labour in the harvest field, The Man was using his best skill to gain A pittance from the dead unfeeling lake That knew not of his wants. I will not say What thoughts immediately were ours, nor how The happy idleness of that sweet morn, With all its lovely images, was changed To serious musing and to self-reproach. Nor did we fail to see within ourselves What need there is to be reserved in speech, And temper all our thoughts with charity. --Therefore, unwilling to forget that day, My Friend, Myself, and She who then received The same admonishment, have called the place By a memorial name, uncouth indeed As e'er by mariner was given to bay Or foreland, on a new-discovered coast; And POINT RASH-JUDGMENT is the name it bears.
I personally feel that it has to be daffodils as the first stanza is what cumbria is, I feel that this must be a feature on the table.

Front and Back Cover for magazine.
After previously designing covers that looked like they were illustrated on Windows Paint, I have gone for a more typographic cover, again not seen on many magazines, they all tend to feature a central image.
I chose the Times New Roman font in the background to resemble that Cumbria has a historic past, which it is not ashamed of, but it needs to modernise and move on, like Gill Sans. I guess you could say its a deep metaphor. Again using the pink orange and white to give insert onto what is in the magazine.

Evaluation of FMP
You may ask why I have created a contemporary, when there’a so many different magazines available in the 21st century, and that such a editorial publication is dying out - I found a gap in the market for modern design in Cumbrian Advertising. Thats why.
I set out to design a magazine, to promote what Cumbria is and was, however to present both themes in a modern magazine design layout/illustrations. To do this I researched into different magazines which are currently in publication in Cumbria. Knowing that the current magazines lacked any modern graphic design, I knew to create what I wanted to it needed to be nothing like them. The work was to show a younger audience 13-30. I chose this particular target market because nothing around cumbria caters to, adolescents or young adults, it goes straight from toddler to OAP’s. Thus, yet another gap in the market. From a Poll I ran, and conducted myself I figured that us youngsters don’t appreciate what a fun place Cumbria is. We live in one of the prettiest counties of Great Britain. To ensure that I kept designing for my target market I asked my peers and friends questions, and for feedback throughout, which I translated into my design work.
The most decisive part of my project was deciding on colours and a chosen font. As I didn’t want the colours to reflect Cumbria, which I found hard to start with. The ManVsMachines campaign for Nike Air Max really helped inspire me, with my choice of colour. From that I chose orange, pink and white, creating a retro, 80’s feel. This was so ‘uncumbrian’ it worked.
Of course I would’ve done loads of things differently, as I have learnt so many different things since the start of Final Major Project. If other commitments didn’t exist, and time wasn’t of the essence I would have loved to interview people I am including in my magazine and take photos of them. I would have also loved to add more text into my work, however to no other fault than my own, I ran out of time to do so, in a creative way, which I am really upset and angry about. I would have also, given time designed other editions to go with it - a collection of ‘I AM’ magazines, which promote other strong, and beautiful things that fit the same contents.  I have also learnt that I am appealing at timetabling, and sticking to it, I also spend too long on designing, as that is what I enjoy the most, and less time trialing things, and seeing what works best.

24/5/18,
Magazine is coming together. i am still designing pages to put into it however here is a selection of some of the final pages that will be used.
I am finding it a lot easier to design now i have a set colour scheme of orange and pink and am keeping it stripped back and simple - simple yet effect effective. I am sure i will get the pages designed in time to get them sent off to the company BLURB to print into a magazine.

22/5/18,
So half way through designing pages for my magazine, I realised my previous front cover designs didn’t reflect what colour scheme i have decided. I have a gone for a more simple orange and pink theme. So here are some stripped back front cover designs which i could use.
Out of the 2 i prefer the first one as it is typographically more interesting with the cross over between edition one and emily.

21/5/18,
PowerPoint for my Pitch for my exhibition space. I plan to present my work in a way in which people ordinarily pick up and want to read a magazine -   a train seat, a coffee table or a  arm chair.( All accompanied by a cup of tea, or course. )

19/5/18, Do my pages so far work together as a magazine ? The first 3 double page spreads work together ( in my opinion ) however the only thing bugging me is the black one line drawings on the pattern design for Donald Campbell. It looks too dark, and this is what you’re drawn to on the page, when everything should work together. I will change the black to another colour like yellow or orange. The 4 double page spread doesn’t seem to fit my theme. I think the polka dots need to be bigger

17/5/18,
Start of my Fearless page for Donald Campbell and his bluebird K7. I have screenshot images of me doing my patterns for my Donald Campbell page instead of doing a more obvious portrait of Campbell himself i have chosen to do a more funky and abstract pattern drawing of a blue bird to represent his craft and records he set in it on water. Id call it a homage to Campbell.
I have matched the colours to the typography layout i have done previously and they work really well together, however i may get rid of the drop shadow as it is too dark on the first 4 letters.

17/5/18,
Magazine pages for my Beautiful page. This is another topic that doesn't have a person in it is to portray the beauty and natural beauty of Cumbria and its landscape.
Design 1 - I have formatted the text to make it into a square to forebode my underlying square theme. However it doesn't compositionally work as a double page spread because it follows such a strong and bold piece of typography. Maybe if I were to do my beautiful page over 2 single pages.
Design 2 - Again keeping the text as a square shape, just making it smaller to try different styles out. Still dislike it however on different pages I feel like it would work.
Design 3 - My favourite out of the 3 because of the pattern, something different to anything else I have previously designed. Everything else has been a flat colour. Maybe experiment with dots and patterns.
I'm not keen on either of these designs as i just cant seem to get the illustration design to follow in the same style as the typography ( its really annoying ) but if i were to chose one it would be the 3rd design as i really like the polka dot sky i have done, it reminds me a little bit of Roy Lichtenstein.

Text for Magazine Pages
All the text i have written myself for my magazine and subjects
Fearless -
Unpredictable - if you’re coming here for a weekend Be prepared to pack a winter coat, shorts and your flipflop’s  because in our neck of the woods you never know whats in the next cloud, or behind it for that matter. Average rainfall a day - 300mm, average wind speed - 24mph, average cloud per day 79%
Beautiful - Cumbria is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places within Great Britain. Vast lakes and rivers crusted with rolling fells and mountains, which to are decorated with people and footprints. Cumbria on average a year gets 41.5 million visitors. This contributes £2.44bn to Cumbria’s economy ( pretty good money if you ask me.)
Brave - Donald Malcolm Campbell was a British speed record breaker who broke eight absolute world speed records on water and on land in the 1950s and 1960s. On 4 January 1967, Campbell commenced the first run of his last record attempt on lake Coniston, here in Cumbria. His last words were “I'm lighting like mad . . . brake gone down . . . er . . . engine lighting up now . . . relighting . . . passing Peel Island . . . relight made normal . . . and now . . . down at Brown Howe . . . passing through 100 . . . er . . . nose hasn't dropped yet . . . nose down.”
Inspiring-  Alfred Wainwright is a British fell walker and illustrator, whom roamed the fells and hills of Cumbria. The Coast to Coast Walk (C2C) , a 192-mile long-walk was devised by Wainwright (which is still walked and cycled today.) Wainwright is so inspiring because his work and walks are still valid today even 27 years after his death. It is a challenge among many Cumbrians, but not just us, to climb the Wainwrights, it takes many people years!
-Fifteen years ago the Cumbrian wheelchair athlete, Simon Lawson, was paralysed from the chest down in a motocross accident that nearly killed him. This man is brave. To be injured the the point of near death, and to get back up from that and represent your country is truly... brave, inspiring and fearless. He is Cumbria.
Tasty -
Creative -
Voice -
Native - The Herdwick is a breed of domestic sheep native to the Lake District of Cumbria in North West England. Herdwick’s are known for their robust health, their ability to live only on forage, and their tendency to be territorial and not to stray over the difficult upland terrain of the Lake District. The wool of the Herdwick is durable and fibrous. These sheep have been known to survive under a blanket of snow for three days while eating their own wool.

17/5/18, Simon Yates illustrations for Fearless Page Done on photoshop. The white line through the background of the illustration is the line that the Void, in which Yates climbed and cut the rope, to give subtle hints to that journey, without necessarily just drawing a cut rope.

17/5/18,
  Feedback from Facebook
I posted a collection of my work to Facebook and asked for some feedback on it ad what people thought of it - specifically my target age group.
I received very positive feedback from my friends all being 18 and 19. The colours I'm using are working really well as people say they’re “fabulous” and “aesthetic” which is what i am aiming towards, because that side of design isn't seen in Cumbria. I have also been told by Georgina that they’re “unique” which is really important to me because i don't want to copy any other designers out there, i want it all to come from me. Melissa has also told me that she likes the “fact it moves around” which means that i can be more playful with my magazine than most because the type doesn't actually matter - the typography and illustrations should speak for itself.
