there's a contingent of climate doomerism that runs something like 1) global warming is capitalism's fault (as though socialism has never caused environmental issues!), 2) we cannot solve climate without overthrowing global capitalism, 3) we do not seem to be about to overthrow global capitalism, therefore 4) we are doomed on climate issues, and 5) anybody who says we are making progress on climate issues is a lying neoliberal shill
this would be merely tragic for the people who are depressed as a result, except that it turns out the difference between politicians who are good on climate vs politicians who are bad on climate within the current overton window in most liberal democracies is actually pretty significant--failing to support the best available options on climate issues (and failing to do what you can to push the overton window even further in the right direction) is actually a huge missed opportunity. i think this is why so many people are annoyed at the Sunrise Movement right now--the desire to look cool to your most pessimistic leftist friends is hobbling what could otherwise be useful and effective activism on an important issue.

The fact that Dante created the most popular image of the afterlife with absolutely no theological basis for it will still be the funniest thing to me

there's a delicate balance between "seeing something on my dash so often i end up caring about it unexpectedly" and "seeing something on my dash so often that it gets added to the blocked list with extreme prejudice"

i consider myself pro-degrowth--in that i think amazon same-day delivery and universal car ownership and all-year-round global fruit supply chains are all fundamentally unsustainable and should be abolished--but the way some people talk about it with a christian martyrdom level of fetishization of suffering is just such a dead-end. if you are going to be an eco-socialist you have to make the case that freedom from wage labour and universal housing and the socialization of wealth are going to be worth giving up the unsustainable luxuries of the capitalist economy in the imperial core--'we're going to make your life worse and you should think that's a good thing' is not a political movement with a future.

“Rich kids should go to public schools. The mayor should ride the subway to work. When wealthy people get sick, they should be sent to public hospitals. Business executives should have to stand in the same airport security lines as everyone else. The very fact that people want to buy their way out of all of these experiences points to the reason why they shouldn’t be able to. Private schools and private limos and private doctors and private security are all pressure release valves that eliminate the friction that would cause powerful people to call for all of these bad things to get better. The degree to which we allow the rich to insulate themselves from the unpleasant reality that others are forced to experience is directly related to how long that reality is allowed to stay unpleasant. When they are left with no other option, rich people will force improvement in public systems. Their public spirit will be infinitely less urgent when they are contemplating these things from afar than when they are sitting in a hot ER waiting room for six hours themselves.”

“Besides, readers aren’t viewers; they recognize their pleasure as different from that of being entertained. Once you’ve pressed the on button, the TV goes on, and on, and on, and all you have to do is sit and stare. But reading is active, an act of attention, of absorbed alertness—not all that different from hunting, in fact, or from gathering. In its silence, a book is a challenge: it can’t lull you with surging music or deafen you with screeching laugh tracks or fire gunshots in your living room; you have to listen to it in your head. A book won’t move your eyes for you the way images on a screen do. It won’t move your mind unless you give it your mind, or your heart unless you put your heart in it. It won’t do the work for you. To read a story well is to follow it, to act it, to feel it, to become it—everything short of writing it, in fact. Reading is not “interactive” with a set of rules or options, as games are; reading is actual collaboration with the writer’s mind. No wonder not everybody is up to it.”
