friendly reminder that more often that not, trailers and promotional material are NOT for fans of the show. they are for the general audience. the show needs to find a way to entice casual viewers into watching again. they don't need to spend their efforts on online fans who will watch the show no matter what. that is why you'll see trailers/posters catering towards casuals with imagery, characters, and yes, relationships that are familiar to them. because that's what works into getting them to watch.

kind of insane they're dropping a teaser now, only 4ish months before the actual season. like, objectively. season 4 had real teaser material at the 9 month mark

but also, feels insanely surreal to get an actual teaser now (with maybe more substance than 8 new frames), waiting three years for production updates kind of made the actual concept of s5 coming out feel fake

i wanna say i'm keeping my expectations low to not get disappointing by a nothing burger. like, a 90% old footage teaser. but honestly november is Not that far off. they're going to need to drop an actual trailer at some point

stranger things, but only from scott clarke's perspective

a kid in your class (a very sweet kid) goes missing. his best friends start acting weird. after their friend's tragic death is announced, you extend your support to the family. after the service they approach you, very seriously, and ask about accessing another dimension. naturally, you assume they're thinking about an alternate universe wherein their friend did not end up losing his life. and they look you dead in the fucking eyes and say no.... no, mr. clarke.... an evil dimension. we want to go to an evil dimension. help us.

and then it turns out it was one of those classic "false positive" deaths wherein a nameless boy that doesn't exist was confused for your student. and also, one of his friends might be dating his cousin now even though you totally thought he was gay. they're calling you at all hours and asking you to help them with their curiousity doors one second and the next the not-dead kid's mom is knocking on your door asking how to turn the gravity off. then the mall explodes. then, six months later, the whole town goddamn explodes. you were literally just trying to vibe to weird al and teach a little science. you're not paid enough for any of this.

the aesthetic of strangers things 1 and 2 is just unmatched they look so much better than the other seasons sorry like everything looks dirty and yellow because joyce byers is smoking inside this is the biblically accurate 1980's

personally, I’m hoping that the new kids are just there to be parallels and call backs for the core 4 and not have too much time spent on them, but who knows!

especially with STs track record of constantly introducing new characters that eat up screen time, i'm really hoping they're more wary of it this time around. because their character roster is already HUGE

you got the six main kids + Erica, four teens + Vicky now, and then two to four adults when you count Murray and Karen. (and this is leaving out characters like Owens, Brenner, Henry, and Billy, who get fleshed out over the seasons as well but aren't part of the acknowledged main cast yet) even for an ensemble show that's a lot. specifically because a lot of these people who should have more side character status still get screentime equivalent to the characters that are actually driving the themes of the show

and having fifteen+ characters you want to treat as important is already such a challenge, and then they consistently make it even harder for themselves by introducing new one-off characters they need to somewhat flesh out only for them to disappear into the ether again right after the season

Max and Erica are some of the few cases where it felt kind of natural to add them to the roster, mainly because they actually got to stick around and blend into the wider character dynamics a bit. but then you've got cases like Murray, where he boils down to Joyce and Hoppers comic relief but still ends up being present for all the dramatic finales and needs things to do and dialogue to say so he's not just standing idly in the background

and that's not even the real one offs like Bob? they really try to speedrun fleshing him out only to kill him off in the end which you could definitely see coming a mile away. Eddie? who was 100% obviously going to die after they introduced the don't run away like a coward thing right at the beginning? Argyle, as much as i liked him, would also end up as a one off character. Chrissy at least dies in the same episode she's introduced in so that's efficient i guess lmao

writing wise they really have a problem of clearly wanting to kill characters for thematic value but not being willing to kill an actual prexisting character, so they need to quickly introduce someone, hope people get somewhat attached to them quickly, and then kill them. which i would be more okay with on paper, but execution wise, that speedrun to get people to like a new nobody means they need a Lot of screentime that lets them be funny and quirky and emotional etc

but yeah, general ramble about my gripes with how ST handles their character roster aside, i do really hope the new kids are going to have minimal presence. like, rest of the hellfire club, or the basketball team kind of 'there and doing stuff, but not something that's going to get a solo plot point'

especially with it being the last season and how much they have to wrap up, not even mentioning how they need to build tension for the finale, having 3 new kids just run around to be cute or something wouldn't do it for me. a subtle parallel that they maybe don't try to rub in your face for nostalgia points once per episode would 100% be my preferred outcome as well
