‘I just don’t get it, what is the catch?’ Jessie asked with a mouthful of bagel.
‘Girl I don’t know he’s literally perfect. Keep your eyes peeled for red flags tonight.’
‘Aww you deserve to be happy. I might make up some red flags so I can him for my self’ Jessie giggled.
You cackled at her, and you both sipped in unison on your vanilla lattes.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
After about 10 different shops had wiped your bank account, you dropped Jessie home and got Joel’s presents, decorations and party food and drink in the house in only four trips to the car.
How was it possible to take 5 hours out shopping for one person? Well, you were extremely last minute, and also extremely extra.
It was only 3pm, so you put the food and drink out in the fridge in the summerhouse and applied a dissolvable sheet mask whilst you took a quick cat nap.
The girls were arriving at 5:30pm to help you set up, so you could take the pressure off yourself and enjoy getting ready.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
You started to stir as your phone buzzed.
Incoming Call:
Joel😻😻
‘Morning baby’ you chuckled.
‘Someone sounds busy’ he tutted.
‘You don’t even know the half of it, asshole’ you sighed.
‘Naw I appreciate you my gorgeous girl. I was just gonna ask, it’s limes with tequila ain’t it and strawberries with champagne?’ He almost seemed too shy to ask.
‘Now I knew you had learned a useful thing or two from me.’
‘You’re not entirely useless. I’ll let you get ready pretty, I’m so excited to see you.’
‘I love you’ you told each other, and you hung up the phone to start your makeup.
You opted for a matte lip with the liner a slightly darker shade of brown, your favourite baby pink blush and the lashes Tommy always said would carry you away if you got caught in strong winds. The rollers were out, and your hair bounced with every step- it was well worth the ridicule Joel gave for stepping out in public with them in.
For the special birthday boy, you opted for a black mini skirt, thigh high boots and a plain white tee body suit. Very Rachel Green of you.  A lace matching set was underneath, and you were saturated in cocoa butter and Prada Paradoxe.
The girls arrived perfectly on time and you greeted them through the door with the sounds of Lauryn Hill and plied them with cocktails straight away.
The first port of call was dressing up the summer house. There was no particular theme so you decided on black and gold. A ballon arch adorned the worn French Doors, and the fairy lights fitted by Joel perfectly complement them. A table was put out with food that Lottie had kindly arranged following your flustered mother dropping hundreds of dollars worth of Costco food and drink round, and Rhea had brought ice buckets for the insane amount of alcohol that you had gathered.
Bunches of balloons were tied to the front door, and you had decided to make a photo wall, filled with photos of you and Joel, Joel as a child with his brother and then some gems of Joel with your Auntie and Uncle from years ago.
The time had flown by, and people had started to arrive slightly early, eagerly waiting to see your brilliant hosting skills in person, and to also make the most of the free bar and buffet.
Your twin sisters arrived, they were only young but were always at every family function, even if it was meant to be adults only. ‘Where’s Mom?’ You asked, so confused as to how they just materialised down the garden path, like that scene from the Shining.
‘Talking to the taxi driver’ they giggled in unison.
‘You’ve got to get it where you can I guess’ Jessie laughed as she appeared next to you. This was swiftly met by an elbow to the ribs and an ‘ignore her’ to your sisters.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
A familiar sound of soft rock and Joel’s laughter floated through the air. You felt giddy and nervous and ran into Joel’s arms as him and Tommy came through the garden gate.
‘Happy Birthday  Baby’ you whispered into his neck. His arms wrapped around your waist, and he lifted you and spun you around. He made sure you were facing your family and your back was out of sight, and he slipped a hand up your skirt and held a handful of your ass. He grunted softly, and kissed your neck.
‘I love it. I love the fact I have a birthday weekend when my birthday isn’t until Tuesday. And I love you. You are perfect.’
You felt flustered and the butterflies doubled. You tried to steady yourself, and gave him the look to say, I can’t wait to get you alone.
Tommy gave you a cuddle and brought you a refilled glass of champagne whilst giving a toast to all you had done.
‘Here’s our guest of honour’ Uncle Rufus appeared and said hello to you both. Clara kissed your cheek and gave you a tight squeeze as always.
‘Well look at the gorgeous couple, gosh you make me sick!’ She teased. Joel pulled you in tight and kissed your head.
‘Not bad going right? Imagine the babies we’d make’ Joel sipped his beer.
You froze like a deer in headlights. Scared but excited, wishing you could stay in this moment forever but also fast forward ten years to turn these dreams into life.
‘They’d be pretty cute, I have to admit’ you felt yourself blushing and broke the awkwardness by going to get everyone a drink.
‘Secret shot?’ Rhea asked.
‘He mentioned babies’ you whispered.
Rhea stopped dead in the middle of cutting a lime wedge, before bursting into a fit of giggles and squeals.
You invited Jessie and Lottie over for a three part tequila shot, and noticed Joel staring in adoration out the corner of your eye. He never let you too far out of his gaze, and never let that gaze drop when you were in his sights.
The night passed with good music, good company, plenty of questions about Joel and how he’s treating you. The heels had been swapped for slippers or sliders, and the alcohol had diminished somewhat, although not from everyone’s blood streams.
It was almost midnight and your mom had to leave to get the girls back to bed. She kissed Joel goodbye and asked if you’d need help tomorrow cleaning up. The playlist had changed to a playlist made of Joel and your favourite songs,  gentle and slow, and everyone had seemed to settle down, nursing their last drinks and having deep conversations with each other.
Joel held your hand and you slow-danced in a corner. Your head rested on his chest, and he rested his head on top of yours. A rough, workman’s hand held a tiny hand within his, and his fingers caressed every outline of yours. You swayed softly, praying this moment never ended.
‘And then I looked up at the sun and I could see
Oh, the way that gravity pulls on you and me’
He ran his fingers up your back and wrapped your curls up and around in his fist. He gently pulled your head away to look at him and kissed you.
Tommy abruptly brought you both back to Earth with a party popper and a change of song from meaningful and delicate, to the sound of whatever cheesy 80s song he switched to.
‘Lovetime’s over Mr and Mrs’ Tommy slurred. ‘Time for the Millers to show you ladies how we move.’
The girls cuddled up to you as you all took a seat on the garden swing, watching Joel, Tommy, Uncle Rufus and their dorky friends all take a shot of tequila and take to the dancefloor. Everyone was in fits of laughter and you and the girls joined the men in their cringe-fest.
This was bliss. The girls couldn’t resist Tommy’s charm, as he draped his arms over all three of your bestfriends. You threw fake evils at Tommy and he raised his glass to you, which you met with a wink. Your glass was empty, so you stumbled over to the bar and topped your glass up with a triple measure of Malibu and lemonade.
‘I love you but you disgust me’ Joel grabbed your hips and mocked you again for your drink choice.
‘It tastes like cream soda, asshole.’ You laughed at him through a kiss, lips pressed to one another.
‘Classless.’ Joel smacked your ass and lit a cigarette. You swatted him off and drank your drink a bit too quickly. Somehow, everyone had hit a peak again and the party showed no signs of stopping. Until, you caught sight of Jess hunched over a plant pot, spewing up her mixed drinks.
You and Joel exchanged looks and he knew that was his sign to start herding the drunk and disorderly while you get the girls guest room sorted.
‘Come on babygirl, let’s get you sobered up’ you stroked Jess’ back and supported her on the venture upstairs.
Joel said his goodbyes on your behalf, while you helped Jess take her makeup off and let her, Lottie and Rhea get snuggled up in bed and sleep off the alcohol.
You swept Leo up in your arms, and Joel locked up downstairs and joined you both in bed.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
The cool breeze left a spray of goosebumps over your bare leg which was exposed from the duvet. You searched to snuggle up to Joel, who was nowhere to be found.
You braced yourself to get up out of bed, before being struck down by the nausea and pounding headache. You laid back down, then sprinted to the bathroom.
Rhea slowly opened the guest bedroom door and you locked eyes, giving eachother the same ‘I’m never drinking again’ look.
She came and sat on the cold bathroom floor with you, and you rested your head on her shoulder and fake sobbed.
‘Have you seen Joel?’ You asked.
‘Girl I don’t know what planet I’m on, let alone know what planet everyone else is on’
You nodded in acknowledgement then went and sprawled out on the bedroom floor, where you and your friends sat in silence.
‘Uhhh ladies’ Joel knocked on the door and smirked.
You all turned in unison to face him.
‘Downstairs is clean and tidy’ Joel winked at you and smiled. The girls cooed and you laughed and hopped up to kiss him.
‘Starbucks?’ You asked the girls.
You went and put on a Juicy tracksuit, Uggs and a pair of oversized sunglasses before standing in the bedroom doorway and nodding to the girls without saying a word. They nodded back and wished you luck.
‘And a Geek Bar please’ shouted Lottie.
‘You’re unhinged, but I’ll join you’ you shouted back.
Joel rolled his eyes and laughed at the hungover state of you. ‘Pathetic,’ he winked, and kissed you goodbye.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
Your friends had gone and it was just you and Joel enjoying your morning.
‘What’s the plan today, baby?’ Joel kissed your forehead as you melted into his chest.
‘Sunday Date Day?’
‘You’re a trooper, hangovers write me off for next four business days’ Joel whistled, surprised at your tenacity through the haze of next day tequila.
‘Let me shower and put some laundry on and we’ll do something cute. You wanna do something fun? Wanna go Taco Bell?’ You winked at Joel.
‘God Karen you’re so stupid’ Joel put on his best feminine accent and popped his hip with a palm to your face.
You squawked in his face, laughing at how well you had trained him. One thing Joel loved about you was your bursts of energy, and how when you were excited, you would just hop around like a puppy and run aimlessly in effort to be productive.
‘I’ll run you a bath, get the washer going and meet me there.’
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
You bounced around for fifteen minutes putting laundry on and running the hoover round the house. Joel called your name and you met him in the bathroom. He had lit a candle and almost overflowed the bathtub with bubbles. He was perched on the side with a towel round his waist, and you slowly undressed and got in the tub with him.
He just about fit, he was so broad and tall. You layed back on his chest, and he drew circles on your stomach and placed kisses on your collarbone.
‘Relaxed?’ Joel whispered.
The vanilla scented bubbles lapped at your chin, and you turned to face Joel, laying awkwardly on your stomach. You kissed him deeply as his hands explored your back.
He grew hard beneath your stomach, and he readjusted himself, as you slithered up towards him, and propped your knees either side of his hips. The bathroom was almost silent, except for the drips of condensation falling from the mirror to the sink, and the splashes of water that echoed rhythmically with Joel’s soft moans. Your reached under yourself and positioned Joel’s cock so you could slowly slide down onto it and take in every inch of him. He placed his hands either side, and behind of, your neck to support you while you leaned your head back in pleasure. His fingers tangled in your hair, and he pressed his palms into the nape of your neck, trying to find a way to cope with the overwhelming feeling of your body grinding against him. His fingers circled the spot on your clit and he watched you with his mouth open in awe, as your skin glistened with sweat and body oil when you writhed and orgasmed.
Your  pace quickened, as he pulled your hair back with one hand, firmer and forcefully. He held your wrists behind your back with his other hand as he finished inside you.
‘Worth the bad back tomorrow?’ You winked.
‘Always’ he exhaled into your neck and kissed you. You pulled the plug and both stood up, rinsing off under the shower head.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
1pm rolled around, and you both decided to walk down to the farmer’s market and spend your Sunday eating and drinking before a cinema date tonight.
You picked a bench in the back corner, in the autumn sun, wrapped up in a hoodie, leggings and a Lakers cap. Joel made a stupid joke and you both giggled like school children. Joel cleared his throat and stopped laughing as you carried on adding to the joke. You looked up at him as he stopped, and the noticed a figure imposing a shadow over your table, and blocking your sunlight.
The waft of Sauvage turned your stomach, and your throat went dry as James and a 5ft8 copper haired girl stood opposite you and Joel.
‘Joel, this is James.’ You croaked.
He looked at you confused, and you widened your eyes and gestured as if to say, how obvious can I make it?
He shook his head to snap back to reality.
‘Broken wall guy?’ Joel stood up to shake his hand and James unwillingly accepted. You noticed Joel’s knuckles go white, clearly proving a point, or getting a kick out of making James squirm.
‘I’m Lexi’ the girl chirped, stepping around the bench to give you a cuddle. You took a step up and kissed her on the cheek instead.
James looked to the floor, and you stared him down.
‘Cute. Special occassion?’ You asked.
‘6 month anniversary’ Lexi giggled and pulled James close.
‘Now, if my maths is correct..’ Joel trailed off and sat back down. You elbowed him in the ribs, and James went red. The smile dropped off Lexi’s face, and her and James walked off mid sentence.
You couldn’t help but look at Joel and you both erupted into laughter. This was closure for you, if it hadn’t already been 100%. Piece of shit. You kissed Joel, and he took your hand in his and rested on your thigh.
He ordered another beer and you sipped a red wine. ‘God, I love you.’ He said, ‘I just want to love you and look after you for the rest of my life.’
‘That can be arranged’ you winked, and gestured to your empty ring finger.
He swiped his finger across your manicured finger, ‘Before or after babies?’
‘We can have all the babies’ you winked, eyes twinkling as your heart skipped a beat.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
‘Remind me never to take you to the cinema again’ Joel huffed as you turned the key in the lock and walked through the door.
‘Yeah I’m not having it. Half an hour of trailers then over two hours of film. A girl simply cannot hold in almost a litre of soda for that long’ you justified.
‘Self control. You’re toilet trained by now, no?’ Joel quipped.
‘Rude. So rude.’ You kicked your leg back, and threatened to shut the door in his face.
He grabbed a handful of your ass as you turned away.
‘Dinner?’ You asked.
‘No thanks, I’m trying to quit.’
‘You can’t say that to everything someone offers you. The bit isn’t working anymore’ you rolled your eyes.
‘Jeez not even a fake laugh for the birthday boy’ Joel kicked back in the sofa and rested Leo over his shoulder.
‘Don’t guilt trip me. I find the joke endearing, let me correct myself.’
‘Apology accepted.’
‘Tell me why I shouldn’t poison your food.’
You had your back to him, stood at the sink washing vegetables for dinner. He took his chance to jump and run through the doors that connected your living room and kitchen. He grabbed your hips and performed an obscene gesture, that you secretly loved.
‘That is why’ Joel pulled you in and kissed your neck.
‘You’re a menace’ you reached over your shoulder and flicked him with water, although a cold shower would be more appropriate. The man was insatiable.

🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
Summer was over and the nights were getting longer and colder. Joel was still the man of your dreams, and you were still as infatuated with eachother three months later, as you were at the start. Things were moving slowly, and he hadn’t popped the big girlfriend question yet, but you had both agreed it was just about you two.
Every Sunday you tried to do something together, whether it was a date or a trip to Target and TJ Maxx. Your work schedule was crazy and Joel was held up with a huge work project, but you didn’t mind because you got eachother back at the end of each day. It was a blessing.
Today was Tuesday and you were in the office twiddling your thumbs, planning Joel’s birthday this weekend. The girls group chat was buzzing as your friends helped you with ideas.
The idea which had been stuck in your mind was giving Joel a spare key, but was this okay if you weren’t even his girlfriend yet? You were had fallen for him, and he never fails to make you feel special.
‘Love has no timeline’ your mom always reminded you. The girls agreed there was no issue. You were just scared, but that’s okay. Joel had been there to catch you everytime.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
The day went quickly, and you headed to Target after work for a treat yourself spree. Joel texted asking if you were free tonight, which was unlike him as he never asked you, he just told you what the plans were. You were suspicious but told him to come over and you’d do dinner for you both and you could catch up on the junk TV you found yourselves hooked on.
You got home, showered and changed into a matching loungewear set and greeted Joel at the door. You were in your pink fluffy robe, and Leo was sat in the pocket.
‘Damn kitten,’ Joel rolled his eyes. ‘He’ll stretch it out then you’ll be moaning about your droopy dressing gown.’
‘Well who ruffled your feathers, asshole?’ You turned round and walked through, letting Joel make his own way in the house.
You made yourself a dirty martini, and saved the olives for Joel,  as he always stole them from you.
He tutted and shook his head. ‘I’m sorry baby, I’ve just got a lot on my mind.’
‘Tell me. A problem shared is a problem halved’ you leaned over the counter and rested your chin in your hands.
‘Let’s talk after dinner. I’m starving.’ Joel kissed you and patted your hip as he got up and grabbed the dinner plates.
You sat at the table in the chairs opposite eachother. Your leg was tucked up under you, with the other resting on Joel’s leg. He squeezed your foot while you unpacked your day. With every word you spoke, his bad mood started to alleviate and the tension dissipated.
‘You go sit down baby, I’ll do the kitchen then I’ll be in’ Joel stood up and kissed your forehead.  You wrapped your arms round his neck and pulled him in for a proper kiss.
‘I love you’ Joel whispered.
You looked up at him speechless.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
Already, you were half asleep on the sofa, and Joel slotted underneath you so your head was laying on his lap, and he was lounging backwards with his legs up on the coffee table.
You turned onto your back, and your eyes locked. His back almost locked trying to reach down to kiss you, but he did it. He’d do anything to kiss you.
‘I love you too, you know?’ Your cheeks heated up and your voice cracked. Shit, this was happening and it felt terrifying.
‘Be my girlfriend, please? I want you to be mine for the rest of our time on Earth. Girlfriend just doesn’t cover it.’
You welled up, and Joel’s eyes shimmered with a mix of fear, hope and adoration.
‘Now why would you do that when you know I’m due on.’ You were now a sobbing wreck, trying to find the words to tell Joel yes.
‘I had to fit it in before my birthday, couldn’t risk not getting that extra birthday present from you.’ Joel dug his fingers into your ribs, unable to be serious for more than five seconds.
‘You and me for as long as we live. I’d love to be your girlfriend and everything else that comes with it.’ He tenderly ran the side of his thumb down your temple and behind your ear, before holding your cheek in his palm. You nudged into it and sat up to kiss him.
‘Thank you for showing me how life should be’ you whispered.
‘Thank you for being my reason for living.’ Joel held you tightly. So tightly you thought you might break, or even worse, so tightly you thought you’d snap back into reality. But this  was real. Joel was the one for you.
‘Will you stay at mine tonight?’ Joel asked.
‘Can you not stay here? I’m working from here tomorrow, would make things easier’ you batted your eyelashes and Joel sighed.
He got up and went to leave to go home and get his stuff. ‘Don’t expect me to bring you back a sweet treat’ he shouted halfway out the door.
You sighed contentedly and sprawled out on the sofa, scrolling through to find a film to watch.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
He got back to you  no longer than half an hour later, of course with some chocolate for you, and before you knew it, you were both snoring on the sofa, intertwined and sweating under the covers of a fleece throw.
Joel insisted on watching Scarface, and you insisted his little friend did not need to be greeted, no matter how many times he repeated the quote. You couldn’t deny his impression was spot on. Why was this man so damn good at everything?
It was only half eight in the evening, and Leo woke you up crying for his dinner. Neither of you were morning people so it took a good thirty seconds of staring at eachother confused before realising what planet you were on. Your limbs dragged behind you as you uncoiled yourself and got Leo fed and settled for bed.
The temperature had started to drop at night, but the best thing about fall was having an ice cold bedroom after leaving the windows open all day. You crept up the stairs, in case Joel had fallen asleep in typical fashion. Instead you were met by Joel in your bed, propped up and topless, reading through one of your self love books.
His glasses sat on the tip of his nose, and his hair fell scruffily across his forehead. The snap of your body lotion bottle shook him from his daze, and he grinned his charming schoolboy grin at you, and tapped the empty space next to him.
With your knees practically buckling beneath you, you awkwardly walked/skipped/jogged to join Joel in bed. Facing eachother on your sides, you ran a finger down his face and traced his jawline, towards the middle of his chin and catching his bottom lip. His mouth parted and his breath hitched as you kissed him. The world fell silent, the moon watched from above and Joel held you tight.
He rolled onto his back and you rested your head on his chest, ready for the sweetest sleep of your life so far.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
Work didn’t officially start until 9am, so you set your alarm for 8am, for a well deserved mid week lay in.
You were pleasantly surprised to find Joel still in bed next to you.
‘You can thank my little friend’ Joel smirked, ‘You have me to deal with all day.’
‘That means a day of absolutely no work getting done’ you kissed his cheek, and went to roll out of bed. He grabbed you by the waist and pulled you closer to him.
‘I don’t want you to leave, it feels cold without you.’
‘You better join me in the shower then’ you whispered, before dragging him out of bed with you for the best way you knew to start his day.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
With an extra spring in his step, Joel hopped up the stairs to check how your day was going.
‘It’s 9:20am baby, what could have gone wrong in 20 minutes?’ You swivelled around on your chair, fluffy pink pen in hand.
Fortunately, a couple of spare rooms in your house meant you got a seperate closet space and office space, although you anticipated something having to give with Joel spending more time at yours. Joel traced his fingers across polaroids hung like bunting across your wall, smiling to himself seeing you in wild places with your friends. He laughed at your versatility which ranged from a polaroid of you laid in the back of a cab with bottle of wine in hand and a feeble attempt at a peace sign and pout, to you in a gorgeous floor length dress with a champagne glass and your best friends either side.
He pulled up one of your decorative stools, which you assured him were not to bear human weight, and span you round in the chair, stopping you in front of him with a kiss on the tip of your nose.
‘What could’ve gone wrong in 20 minutes?’ He sits back, straddling the stool, and makes a pensive face before pacing around your office again.
You rolled your eyes, the same ones that you just couldn’t take off him.
‘Bath and body works announce the discontinuation of your favourite vanilla something candle’ he points at you.
‘Don’t even tempt fate with that’ you retort, ‘now Mr Miller, are you going to change my life, or are you going to get out my office and let me finish some work?’
‘Baby, your life changed the minute we met’ Joel stood by your window, silhouette skewed by the bright sunlight coming in behind him. He turned to face you and smiled.
‘Want me to do your fall lights on the summerhouse? Get it ready for Saturday. What do you say? Finish work, fall decoration shopping then a lazy night?’
‘You know me better than I know my self’ you stood up on tiptoes, wrapping your arms round his neck, and rubbing his ears between your thumb and pointer finger whilst rubbing your nose against his.
‘Well stop being lazy, and I’ll see you at 12pm for lunch’ Joel pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and stepped backwards out of your office, closing the door softly behind you.
You smiled and found yourself counting down the seconds before you could see Joel again.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
The sound of Kings of Leon showed you the way and found Joel sat in the summer house with Leo, waving a rainbow coloured toy in circles.
‘Lunchtime, Mr Miller,’ you cooed.
He parted his legs, and you perched on his thigh, balancing a tray of food in your hand as you kissed him tenderly. He supported your back as you got up to sit next to him for lunch.
‘Much work left to do baby?’
‘No, pretty quiet day. Just waiting for the transitional stuff to come through for the new job’
‘New job? Do tell?’ He scooped Leo up in his arms and they both leaned in.
You giggled and told him all about the promotion, and your new team you were managing and the opportunities this would give you.
‘I’m so proud of you baby’ You had never heard a tone so soft from a man so tough, as he shook his head almost in disbelief.
‘I’m doing it for us,’ you whispered back, as Joel held your chin in the palm of his hand.
‘Well, your taste in fairy lights is exceptional’ He flicked the switch and stood with his hands on his hips, above his worn out belt.
‘I love them, baby! I look forward to getting the pumpkins out later.’
‘I have to say I’m looking forward to seeing them too’ Joel quipped, grabbing a handful of your hips and ass.
‘Yeah I’m definitely going to have to put out after everything you’ve done’ you joked with him, pretending to admit defeat.
‘I’ll see you at 5pm’ he shouted, as you began to walk down the garden back to the office. You blew a kiss at him, resisting the urge to sprint to him and never let him go.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
The most spoilt kitten in the world slept on your lap all afternoon, whilst Joel kept your water bottle topped up and snack bowl filled in between his work calls.
5pm graced you with her presence, so you grabbed your coat and errand running purse, slipped into your Uggs and coated yourself in Amber Romance.
‘Got to go Tommy, see you this weekend bud. 8pm, her place. Don’t forget my presents’ Joel slipped his phone in his back pocket, and winked at you. His version of ‘How you doin’?’.
‘You think you’re soooo slick’ you squinted sarcastically, whirling your key chain around your finger.
‘And you think you’re sooooo cool’ Joel put on his impression of your phone voice, and reminded you who was boss.
‘Okay I deserved that. Only letting you off because you’re the most handsome boyfriend ever.’
‘Agreed. Right, pumpkin spice time baby.’ Joel held open the front door, then strided to open your driver’s door whilst you locked up.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
Fall shopping was completed, and you were looking forward to getting home and stuffing your face with Joel’s casserole and lazing on the sofa for the evening.
‘I don’t know, I just guess pinecones and mushrooms are for September, pumpkins are for October and then it’s seeing how far you can go before putting the Christmas tree up in November’ you justified the 250 dollar spending spree.
‘You are an enigma’ Joel was intrigued, and he figured he had a lot to learn about life with a girl in her 20s.
Joel held your thigh the whole journey home, whilst your Fall Feelings playlist soothed your brains after a so far busy week.
‘I don’t know where and I don’t know when. But I know we’ll be lovers again. I’ll see you someday before the end, I don’t know where and I don’t know when. But oh darling my heart’s on fire’
You smiled softly to the lyrics of what was now Joel’s favourite song in the world, his thumb rubbing your hand and you holding his hand like it was your last chance.
‘I didn’t know I could feel something so deeply.  I’ve loved things, but I’ve never been in love until now’ Joel looked out the window, watching the fields roll by,
You raised his hand in yours to kiss it.
Comfortable silence fell throughout the car, and you were sure you floated from the car to the house. Elated, loved and secure.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
The pair of you had finished decorating the house, and finally sat to have dinner. The air was filled with the scent of incense and cinnamon and vanilla candles, and the house had never felt more like a home.
‘Do you think Tommy can keep you busy Saturday until 8pm?’ You asked.
‘As long as you don’t throw me out silly early to put a few balloons up, then maybe we can come to an agreement’ he grabbed your knee under the table.
‘That’s one less gift you’re getting’ you flicked your hair off your shoulder.
Joel laughed and stroked your hand across the table. ‘I’m looking forward to it baby, just let me know what I can do to help.’
‘It’s your birthday silly, you let me do the running around. Any special requests?’
‘It is all down to you, princess. As long as you and the girls keep away from the tequila and it doesn’t turn into karaoke night.’ he ran his hand over his mouth and across his stubble.
‘Boring, just for that I’m buying double tequila’ you walked past with the dinner plated in hand and flicked your heel up to playfully tap him.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
The rest of the week flew by, Joel was busy with a few projects and you were in the office for the last couple of days.
It was a beautiful Saturday morning, there was a chill in the air but the sun shone through, and the red and orange leaves glistened from the morning dew.
The decision was hard, but you forced yourself out of bed at 7am, unwillingly peeling away from Joel to get yourself ready.
You hopped in the shower, washed your hair and rinsed off the way too dark tan guide colour.
The errand running outfit was your favourite baby pink tracksuit, the zip up hoodie oversized for an off the shoulder style and your hair pin-curled up with military precision.
Joel woke up and stumbled into your office to find you slumped over your desk, vigorously writing your to do lists, shopping lists and list of lists that need creating.
‘You look like a prawn sitting like that.’ He leaned against the door frame, one elbow supporting him, and the other hand on his hip.
Your throat went dry at the sight of him. Shaggy hair, V-Lines that would be unachievable even if sculpted by Michelangelo himself and a morning voice drizzled in honey.
‘And you look good enough to eat, but you don’t hear me making a fuss.’ You turned to face him, and reclined back in your chair.
He started walking towards you, and you sat up, straightening your back and locking eyes with him. Joel took a deep breath, as you held his hips in your hands and kissed across the skin above the waistband of his shorts, and you gently scratched your red nails down his tense core.
‘Come here baby’ you whispered, pulling his shorts down to his knees. He stepped closer to you, and began to wince as you dragged your tongue across the underside of his cock. Moans echoed throughout the room as you took Joel deeper and deeper to the back of your throat, occasionally whimpering when he thrusted too deep. All he could manage was the words ‘babe’ and ‘so good’ as he melted.
You knew his weaknesses and all the tricks to make him feel as much pleasure as possible. His bare thighs were painted with goosebumps, as you slowed down the pace and kissed down his hips before devouring him again. He grunted and held your throat delicately as he climaxed. There was an obscene glimmer in your eyes as you stared at him whilst he ran his thumb from the corner of your mouth to the middle of your bottom lip and you sucked his thumb in one slow motion.
‘Where have you been all my life?’ He pulled his shorts up and fell to his knees in front of you.
‘Missing you, baby’ you pulled his head in to your chest and kissed the top of his head, taking in the scent of shampoo in his curls.
He laid against you for a while, trying to regain his strength. ‘FUCK, Tommy will be here any minute’ he bolted back into your bedroom to get his stuff before jumping in the shower.
Following him into the bathroom, you admired him for a while whist brushing your teeth again, and gave him a kiss through the shower curtain.
‘I love you baby, will leave you both some coffee in the pot, I’m going to get Jess. I’ll see you tonight.’
You bounded down the stairs, grabbed an energy drink and bottle of water and headed to prepare for Joel’s party.

It was a hectic rush trying to get the girls home in order to give you enough time to Sunday reset plus get ready for date night.
1 New Message- Joel:
‘You’re not allergic to anything are you?’’
You:
‘Plotting my murder already Mr Miller?’
Joel:
‘Call me Mr Miller again and I think I’ll be the one dying🫣’
You:
‘Duly noted…. Mr Miller’
Joel:
‘Get ready and stop teasing me.’
You smiled at your phone like a mad woman. Leo followed you step by step, getting under your feet as usual, but ultimately stopping and giving up when you slipped off your robe and he curled up amongst it.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
Joel knocked on your door. You brushed out your pin curls, and ran down the stairs.
He stood there with a bunch of roses, a bottle of prosecco and a crate of strawberries.
Your eyes watered and Joel swiped his thumb under your eye to stop you crying.
‘Come on baby, I’m not that bad am I?’ Joel had his hands full but you lunged into him and held him tightly.
He gave you the prosecco which you popped in the fridge, and he followed you through the kitchen.
He pulled you close and kissed you. You wore an orange sundress, with cut outs either side of the waist. It was floor length and you had to lift it ever so slightly when walking. Joel scrunched it in his hand and ran his fist up your thigh.
‘Now this I like,’ he growled. You gently bit and pulled on his bottom lip.
He smacked your ass and left you high and dry. ‘Come on baby, we’ve got some dating to do.’
You poured him a half measure of red whilst he waited, and you went upstairs to reapply your lipstick and add your jewellery and perfume. You picked your shoes and purse, and met Joel in the hallway. He had cut your flowers and arranged them in a vase, then set them upon the white marble table you had in the centre of the room.
‘Let’s go, Mr.’
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
Joel drove the truck back to his house and you walked to the train station, which was the next road up from Joel.
He had prepaid for your tickets and you started your journey into the city.
‘You’re pulling out all the stops. Do this for all the ladies?’ You snarked, teasing was in your blood.
‘Only the ones that deserve it’ he smiled and winked at you. You tilted your head and patted his side.
He smelt so good. The fresh mint on his breath, the scent of his hair product and the musk of his aftershave. You leaned your body up against him, enjoying the close proximity as you waited to disembark.
He grabbed your hand and led you to the restaurant.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
‘I know it’s a cliche, but I figured you liked the finer things in life’ Joel said bashfully.
‘I would’ve let you stay the night last night without a date’ you winked.
‘Bold of you to assume I’m finishing the date after that.’ He gently cupped your chin in his hands. You felt heat rise at how much of you he could fit in his palm and how close he was to you.
You swallowed dryly, and he swept a stray hair off of your eyelashes.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
Joel ordered a sancerre for you to share. Out of habit, you went to pour the glass for Joel. You had never been wined and dined like this, it was always a 5 buck bottle of wine and takeout with James.
He swatted your hand away and frowned. He nodded and filled up your glass. You found his leg with your foot under the table, slipped off your Oran sandal and ran your foot up and down his calves. Being peak summer, you got to enjoy the full feeling of Joel’s muscular legs, and he reciprocated the appreciation by clenching his jaw and grabbing your ankle under the table.
‘One sniff of wine and this is how you behave’ You squealed then spluttered and held a laugh in so hard you thought you might pass out.
Joel stared at you through a smile and patted your leg.
The waiter approached asking you for your food order. The devil on your shoulder took the reigns, and as Joel was mid sentence, you placed your foot on inbetween his legs and started to paw at his crotch.
He sharply inhaled and coughed. He knew he had the upperhand with you though, and he adjusted himself on the chair, leaning back passing the menus to the waiter and thrusting his hips upwards into your foot.
A wave of lust crashed in your stomach and you squirmed in your seat.
Joel shook his head incredulously and licked his lips as he sniggered to himself.
You leaned over the table to kiss him. ‘Thank you for tonight, Joel.’
You both managed to stop the antics and enjoy grown up conversation. You opened up about your life, your childhood, your family. Joel did the same, you shared tears and smiles and your hearts grew fonder by the second.
‘Bill and bedtime?’ Joel held your hand in the middle of the table and you both necked the remainder of your wine in unison.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
You finished up at the restaurant and strolled back to the station and headed home.
Your arm was interlocked with Joel’s the whole time, and you spoke about so much yet nothing at all.  The wine made everything funnier than it should be, and all shyness and first date jitters had been subdued.
Joel walked you home. It was only 9pm and it was still a bright summer evening.
‘Nightcap?’ You asked at the threshold of your home.
‘I’m taking the date was a success then.’
‘I don’t ever want you to go’ you whispered, as Joel traced a line across your collarbones.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
You poured two glasses of drink, slipped off your shoes and laid your purse, keys and phone on the worktop.
A firm hand scooped your hair into a ponytail before letting it fall down your back.
Joel planted kisses down the side of your neck, behind your ear, and round to your jawline. He nibbled on your earlobe and your breath hitched as goosebumps covered every part of your body.
You reached up and around, holding Joel’s head close to you, and pulling him in. Your back arched and your pelvis tilted back into him as he unzipped your dress. His hands grabbed you firmly on your hips and he lifted you up onto the counter.
He kissed you softly, one hand rested on the back of your neck, and the other holding your thigh which was wrapped around his waist.
You both broke away and took your drink down in one. Joel caught the strawberry between his teeth. He brought it up to your lips and you took a bite. The look in his eyes was animalistic, and the dress you were wearing was soon in a pile on the kitchen floor. He kneeled down and ran the half eaten strawberry up your inner thigh, then traced the pale red line with his tongue.
‘Is this okay?’ Joel pressed a kiss to your thigh and held your hands.
‘Yes. Have all of me’ you breathed heavily. Your knuckles turned pale as you held the edge of the counter with dear life.
A cold breeze caught you by surprise as the summer air caught onto the wet stripe up your thigh. Joel hooked his fingers under the thin waistband of your underwear. Using this, he pulled himself up closer to you.
The bridge of his nose pressed into you and he dragged his bottom lip up over your lace covered core. He pulled your underwear to the side and delved into you like you were the last meal on Earth. Both of his hands were behind you, grabbing onto your ass and pulling you onto his face, practically suffocating him. He licked stripes up your folds and paid attention to your clit. His tongue danced upon you and he stretched you out with two of his fingers simultaneously. You rebalanced yourself as both of his hands were soon to be occupied, as he took himself in his right hand and succumbed to the lust. The grunts and moans were obscene, and you were so drunk on this feeling. You caught a glimpse of his naked lower half, and you instantly felt flushed. You rocked your hips and pressed yourself against his tongue, and he drew an orgasm out of you in no time. He came just after you. You pulled his hand up toward your lips and cleaned his two fingers, relishing in the taste of you and him combined.
He grabbed the kitchen towel from you and cleaned himself up. He stood up and kissed you. You couldn’t help but still be turned on by the wetness of his beard. He licked his bottom lip,and smiled. You fell onto his shoulder and laughed.
‘Holy fuck, I’ve never come so fast in my life’ you were in disbelief. ‘I think you’ve ruined every other man for me now.’
‘Good. I don’t want you to be anyone else’s’ Joel kissed you, and picked you up in his arms.
He carried you up the stairs and ran you a bath.
‘Big day tomorrow?’ He asked.
‘Lots of meetings, lots of work, lots of missing you.’
He was crouched by the bath, monitoring the temperature and swirling around the bubbles.
He walked into your room where he had left you and almost crumbled at the sight of your body. Unclothed and glowing. He kicked off his shoes, and walked towards you. He crawled onto the bed and let his full body weight compress you. Limbs were everywhere as you tried to enjoy the last drop of eachother before it was time to go. He kissed you greedily and grinded onto you.
‘Bath’s ready. I better make a move baby’ he grinned, knowing full well you were craving him still. He knew he couldn’t let on that he needed you just as much.
He picked up your robe, draped it over you and you walked him downstairs.
‘Thank you for tonight baby. You’re real special to me, I hope you know that.’ Joel stroked your hair back and kissed you again.
‘The pleasure is all mine. Thank you for treating me like a princess. Text me when you get home.
‘Bye baby.’
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
Next week had been planned meticulously and your daily routines had been set up. The outfits had been organised and your home was spotless. Joel had run the bath hot enough for you to sweat out the wine, and you had a herbal tea to set you up nicely for the morning.
Joel had called you to let you know he was home, and you exchanged kind words and compliments.
‘I miss you already’ Joel said.
You looked at the semi dry patch of paint on your wall where Joel had repaired the hole left by your ex.
Was it too soon? Were you healed or distracted? Did you heal before you’d broken things of with James, knowing you were preparing for the inevitable.
‘Baby?’ Joel whispered.
‘I miss you too. I’ll see you soon baby.’
‘Call me in the morning before work, we’ll plan the next time.’ Joel sounded chipper but uneasy.
‘I can’t wait. Night,my sweet.’
You couldn’t shake the feeling that this could turn out to not be right for you, but you hadn’t give James a second thought. Even tonight, James only crossed your mind because you were close to self sabotage.
You texted your mum goodnight. She responded and sent the link to your horoscope for the weekend, as she always does on Sundays.
‘The Universe has no timeline. What’s meant for you will find a way.’
You scrolled to your phone for a picture that you took of Joel and yourself after dinner. It replaced your old lockscreen, and you smiled.
Maybe the universe is right, you thought, I’m exactly where I deserve to be.

🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
Saturday morning was glorious. Your bedroom was fortunately positioned so that the sun shone through your white cotton curtains, and woke you up naturally. Although you didn’t get to revel in the peace for long, as Leo decided to scale the curtains and cry for help as he got stuck in limbo.
With a sigh, you rolled out of bed. You scooped Leo up in your arms and held him whilst you made the rounds opening all the windows and setting the house up for the day.
The coffee machine was the most important visit of the day. You were an early riser, so your 7am coffee was the surest way to keep you somewhat personable. You put some music on and started to tidy your kitchen, when your phone started ringing. It was Joel.
‘Morning, could you text me your address? I’ll be there within the hour.’
‘Sure! I’ll get the coffee ready now’ you replied.
Joel chuckled ‘See ya.’
Someone’s not a morning person, you thought to yourself.
You let Joel know to let himself in round the back in case you didn’t answer as you were getting yourself ready. You ran up the stairs, trying to ignore the excitement in your chest. It would be the first time you’d have  some potential male attention, although he was an old family friend, surely he wouldn’t see you in that way. You got out of your head, made your bed and sprayed it with your fabric freshener, then lit a stick of incense followed by your favourite sedona sandstone candle.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
You showered and drenched yourself in cocoa butter and your Flora Luminare perfume. The doorbell rang and you skipped downstairs to answer.
Joel stood there, towering over you. He was gorgeous. Chiselled, tanned, the deepest brown eyes and softest looking lips.
He stood there taking you in. You were shorter than him, your hair fell down to your waist and he was encompassed by a cloud of your scent. He could’ve fallen to his knees in awe of you. He remembered the brief moments he had seen you before. It was always after one too many beers, but he knew he found you were beautiful. You made him laugh too, you were always as if butter wouldn’t melt, trying to keep your asshole ex-boyfriend sweet. But he remembered you sneaking smokes in the front yard at family parties, or downing a shot of tequila in the kitchen on your own when things got too much. The sparkle in your eyes never dulled, and your smile never faded.
‘Hey, thanks for coming so early’ you smiled.
Joel shook himself out of his daze.  He winked at you and put his hand on your shoulder.
‘No problem, show me the damage darling.’
His eyes twinkled and he smirked as you placed your hand on Joel’s. You squeezed his hand and gestured him in.
He examined every part of your house on the way to your bedroom. The baby pink accents, the kitten toys scattered all over the place, and the framed pictures of you with your friends and family.
You quickly joined him with a mug of coffee. You sat cross-legged on the bed. You were wearing baby pink yoga pants and a plain white cropped tee. He looked you up and down, very brazen and not ashamed. You blushed and adjusted yourself to let Leo join you.
‘You the clumsy type then?’ Joel sized up the hole in the wall, and looked over his shoulder at you, with an eyebrow raised.
‘Erm, my ex-boyfriend. Fragile masculinity and alcohol’ you looked down and Joel cringed. He faced you and rested his hands on his hips. Your throat went dry and you couldn’t tell if you were turned on or terrified of being told off for letting yourself in that situation.
‘I’m sorry, baby’ Joel dropped his head and started fixing the wall.
You watched him intently. His arms flexing as he worked his magic. You let Joel finish as you went downstairs to fix up some food for him to take with him.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
‘The wall’s fixed. Anything else I can do?’ Joel startled you and you hopped round and laughed.
He took the second mug of coffee you offered him and gazed at you.
‘I need my locks changed’ you rifled down your drawers unable to find the replacement locks, then you remembered you had put them in your glass cabinet.
The pictures of your dad faced outward as you opened the door to the cabinet, and Joel felt his heart drop. He was so fond of your dad, and couldn’t imagine the shit you had been through this past year.
He chuckled and took the locks out of your hands.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
‘I’m all done, is that everything?’ Joel poked his head round the doorway of your dressing room. You grinned as you finished applying your lipgloss and turned around to Joel.
‘Yes thank you, Mr Miller’ you winked.
He turned as if to go. ‘Wait, wait, wait’ you clambered up out of your seat, ‘I’ll see you out.’
Joel gestured to let you lead the way and you half curtsied. He was intrigued. You were so high energy and like a ball of sunshine, and he felt like he was 18 again.
He got his stuff ready and began to head back to the car.
‘Erm, Joel. I’m having my family and friends round tonight for some drinks. I’d love you to come, to say thank you for your help. Clara and Rufus will be there, so will Mum and the girls’ you felt embarrassed and desperate, but Joel made you feel safe.
‘I wouldn’t miss it for the world, text me a time’ Joel winked and waved as he headed back towards his truck.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
You were a woman infatuated. Joel occupied every corner of your mind. You slid on your flip flops and grabbed your purse before heading to get food and drink for your night of hosting.
You stopped off to drop Rufus and Clara’s lunch to their shop.
‘Now when were you going to tell me Mr Miller is devastatingly handsome?’ You burst through the door of the florist.
‘Well I thought it would be a welcome surprise’ Clara smirked.
‘He’s already called. Said he’s looking forward to seeing us tonight, and that you are an absolute angel.’ Rufus hooked his arm around you, roughing you up as you both do.
‘Eeek! I’m obsessed’ you twirled round and waved yourself out the door. You blew a kiss and practically waltzed down to your car.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸
‘Come here anytime from 4:30pm. Wear something pretty😉’ you felt bold after the margaritas you had downed whilst getting ready with the girls. Lottie, Jess and Rhea were your absolute world. You were dancing around the bedroom and dressing room, blaring your music and feeling half tipsy.
It was 3:37pm, and Joel sat at home waiting restlessly to leave. He decided to call your Auntie and Uncle and get a lift with them.
‘Who are you texting?’ Rhea snatched your phone out of your hand.
‘Stop, you can’t even judge me on this. He’s the hottest man I’ve ever seen. He fixed some bits up in the house yesterday. Knows Rue and Clara, an old family friend. He’s coming tonight’ you girls all squealed in unison.
Rhea still had your phone and headed straight to Facebook. She got Joel’s profile up right away and mocked you with it. She accidentally liked a photo from 3 years ago, and her face dropped. You all went silent before freaking out. She threw your phone to the center of your bed.
It lit up:
Facebook:
One new friend request- Joel Miller
Chaos ensued, and you were quick to accept it.
Joel texted you letting you know they were on their way. You felt giddy.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
Your mum and sisters arrived and you set your sisters up in the summerhouse at the end of the garden with some of their friends they had bought along. You made them mocktails and let them have free roam of your beauty drawers and facemasks beforehand.
You switched on the fairylights around your garden, and you and the girls sat debriefing on life with your mum and her best friend.
Joel and the rest of your family creeped round through the side gate. You stood up to greet them and your auntie and uncle held you tightly before sauntering off to see your mum and sisters. A few more family acquaintances turned up, and people you know and love, but this was all a daze as Joel kissed your cheek and pulled you in for a cuddle.
His dark curls were swept backwards, with the exception of one that fell over his forehead. ‘Thank you for having me’ he whispered into your ear.
You traced down his arms to his hands, and you squeezed them as if to say thank you. His hands lingered on your waist, perhaps a second too long and the girls couldn’t help but wolf whistle.
Joel laughed, and headed over to meet everyone.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
The night was beautiful, everyone had too much food and drink, but everyone was happy and content. Your sisters and friends had crashed out in the spare room, which was fine, you loved having guests.  Your mum left after you assuring her you’d be fine to drop the girls off home tomorrow. Your friends had booked an uber to go to the club, but you were more of a homebody, plus Joel had stuck around and you didn’t want him to leave.
You cleared the glasses and bottles away in the kitchen, Joel offered to help but he sat at the table and watched you instead.
You offered him a cigarette from your hidden box which was in the empty biscuit tin. You sat next to eachother on the backdoor step. The sun was setting and it caressed his features and soaked them in a golden hue. Everything had been moving in double speed since you met him, and now was the first time you got to take in every bit about him, and was also the first time you noticed he did the same to you. He made you laugh until your stomach hurt, and you made him feel relaxed. As you laughed, you leaned into his side, and he wrapped his arm over your shoulders and placed a kiss upon the top of your head.
You looked up at him and he kissed you. Deeply and passionately and carefully. You relaxed your arms over his shoulders and as you deepened the kiss. Then tested the waters and held onto his neck, under his jawline, and pulled him towards you.
‘I wanted to do this since I saw you,’ Joel tilted his forehead pressed against yours, and you grinned. ‘What are you doing tomorrow?’
‘No plans, tackling the aftermath of this I think. Why do you ask?’ Joel stroked your thigh with his thumb. It was cold from nursing a beer, but it was welcome.
‘Would you like to go on a date with me?’ Joel felt shy, and anxious.
‘I wouldn’t want to do anything else. Text me the details, and I’ll be there’ you blushed and kissed his cheek.
‘I’ll pick you up at 5pm baby’ Joel kissed your cheek and headed out as he stumbled towards the cab he had booked.
He sat in the back of the cab and motioned a phone with his hand and mouthed call me. You blew a kiss and waved him off, giggling like a school girl as he waved out of the window of the car.
🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷🧸🪷
You showered and headed to bed, high on life and feeling like you were floating.
‘Good evening Mr Miller’ you tried your best at flirting, and following Joel’s orders to call him.
‘I’ve been wondering when you’d call’ he yawned.
‘Bad timing?’
‘Never bad timing with you. I’d answer your call at any second of any day.’ His southern drawl flipped your stomach.
‘I’ll remember that, I may need you a lot from now on.’ You rolled over and snuggled into your pillow.
‘You get some sleep baby. I can’t wait to see you tomorrow’
You hung up the phone, texted Joel goodnight and slept through the night in peace.

The front door slammed. The alarm clock showed 4:47am. James was meant to leave for work at 5:30 am, but he had clearly made a point of leaving early and waking you up in the process.
You swallowed, forcing the lump in your throat back down as you regained awareness and the ringing in your ears reminded you of the reason for the spite behind  your boyfriend’s exit. The hole in the wall and the dull aching in your wrist served as an ugly reminder, just as much as the echoes of James’ yells.
Your mum hated James, and if your dad was still here, James would have been given the boot, whether it was down to you or not. However, you had settled. You were soft spoken, kind, caring, beautiful. Any guy would be lucky to have you and deep down you knew this, but again, you were too kind to ever say no.
James had moved in with you after you bought your home with the inheritance from your dad. His name was on no legal document, and he had no financial input to the running of your home, yet you let him encroach, and you felt more of a guest than he did. Things were really good at the start, he treated you okay and you got on well most of the time, then came the messages from girls on Instagram and the late nights smelling of alcohol and perfume. You slowly detatched yourself from him, mentally learned to not feel any sort of way. You weren’t interested in anyone else, but you just didn’t love him anymore. He sure as hell didn’t love you anymore.

Last night was the final straw:
You had got home from work, beaming with pride for the new promotion and set of responsibilities that came with it. The inheritance money from your dad help set you up in your home, but you worked damn hard to keep up with the cost of running the place. Mortgage payments and bill payments came out of your own pocket.
‘James?’ You shouted, half defeated. You hung your bag up on the back of the barstools in the kitchen, and preheated the oven for dinner.
Your phone rang.
‘Hi, I’m not about for dinner. Don’t worry about me’ James slurred down the phone.
‘Okay, be safe. See you when you’re home. Love you.’ You may as well have spoken to a brick wall, as James hung up and the line went down.
Your eyes stung, but you shook it off and continued with your dinner and ran a bath and got into bed. You had a huge day of meetings tomorrow and were determined to make a good impression on your new team.
James eventually stumbled in, waking you up as usual and treating the house as a rage room.
You held your eyes tight, and your palms sweated as your body froze. Remember the feeling when you were seven and thought you heard a ghost, or a monster under the bed?
He bounded up the stairs and shouted your name. He grabbed your wrists and woke you up.
‘Where’s my dinner?’ He slurred.
‘You told me you weren’t about.’ You meekly defended yourself.
‘Fucking useless’ he hissed.
You sobbed. ‘We’re done.’ You had finally snapped. You couldn’t even give an argument or any other words. Just that.
James punched the wall, inches away from the television opposite the bed, then proceeded to stumble backwards and pass out on the bed.
You set his alarm an hour earlier, out of spite, knowing he’d hate being woken up and would probably not be able to go back to sleep. As you unlocked his phone:
1 new message from Lottie:
See you in the office tomorrow, thanks for the drink!💋
You chuckled dryly, and got back to sleep. You felt a weight had lifted and you could finally live life on your own terms and be your own person.

You had finished getting ready for work, and decided to call your mum on the way to the office.
‘Hey Mumma,’ you whispered softly.
‘Baby, are you okay? James texted me asking if I could get his stuff ready for his mum to collect,’ your mum sounded concerned but also slightly hopeful.
‘I ended it. It was too much, he broke my wall, he hurt me. I owed it to you, Daddy and myself to do better,’ your voice cracked, but you reminded yourself of how much you deserved this life you worked so hard to finally be able to live.
‘I’ll kill him. Motherfucker.’ Your mum scoffed.
‘I’m fine Mum. I got my promotion, I wanted to throw a celebration at mine this weekend to tell you. Why don’t you and the girlies come round for drinks and we’ll debrief.’
‘I’m so proud of you, plum’ your mum sniffled, and you wanted to reach out and cuddle her, ‘ I hope you’re dressed to the nines for the meeting today.’
‘I dug out the Speedy and she is back in business’ you laughed.
‘That’s my girl.’
James hated your designer hand bags. He thought it was pretentious and he hated the way people looked at him after the conversation stuck at the fact you had bought everything for yourself. His money went on boys nights.

You made it through the day. Everyone in the office loved you, and you were so hardworking and intelligent. Admittedly though, you cried over a glass of rosé with your ultimate hypeman and bestfriend Lottie at lunchtime. If anyone was going to give your praise, it was her and your mum. Your little sisters were too young to give you adult  praise, but they had their own ways of expressing their pride, as well as 12 year old girls can.
You stopped off at your Uncle and Auntie’s florist as you did every Friday, for your fresh bouquet of weekend flowers. Rufus was your dad’s best friend, and his wife Clara was like a second Mum to you, hence the Auntie and Uncle title, as they earned it.
They had your sunflowers wrapped in brown paper, with a polaroid of your dad tucked in the fold. Every week they would surprise you with a new picture of your dad, which you hung as a trophy on the inside of your wine glass cabinet. Your dad loved his wine, and you knew he’d be best remembered when people were getting their tipple.
You choked up, like you always do when you see your dad, and Clara held you tight. Rufus came up behind you and swept your soft curls off your shoulder and cuddled you both in his arms.
‘I love you both so much’ you sniffled, wiping your tears, ‘I wanted to tell you both i broke up with James. I wish Daddy was here so we could pop a bottle.’
Clara cackled, and Rufus waited to see if you were going to cry anymore or if it was safe territory to joke along.
‘I’m gonna need a number of someone to fix my wall and change my locks though,’ you shuffled a stone across the florist floor, looking down out of fear of being interrogated.
Rufus rolled his eyes and lit a cigarette, you took a drag and Clara gave you a number of an old friend.
‘Your mum would kill both of us,’ Rufus pointed at you, as you held onto the cigarette and blew the smoke in his face with a wink.
‘Mum’d let me off, I’ve been through a whirlwind.’ No one could tell you no. As much as people could take advantage of your softness, you knew how to wrap people around you little finger. ‘I’m having drinks at mine tomorrow, come. Mum and the twins will be there, so will a couple of the girls. I’d love you there.’
‘Don’t need to ask us twice, plum’ Rufus kissed your head, and Clara kissed your cheek as she held your head tightly.
Your heart was full, and for once there was no dread or fear.

You got to your front door, and crossing the threshold, inhaled a deep breath. The smell of your perfume lingered, and there was no sign of James. All his stuff was gone, and his car wasn’t there. His set of keys was on the side, with a note that said ‘thank you for everything, I’m sorry I couldn’t be the man for you.’
It was bittersweet, as you used to love him, but this was a chapter that needed to end. He didn’t want kids, or marriage or the picket fence. This was convenient and you had too much love in your heart, which needed reciprocating.
You twiddled the card in your fingers, with a number and the name Mr Joel Miller written on it.
You sat in your lounge, legs tucked up on the sofa beneath you, and you boldy texted.
‘Hey Joel. My auntie Clara gave me your number. Are you okay to do some work on my place tomorrow, I know it’s Saturday but I have evening plans and need it fixed or my mum will flip her shit. I’ll pay double and provide coffee🤸🏻’
Joel smirked upon reading the text, and somehow, his heart skipped a beat.
‘Hey darling, how could I forget about Clara’s girl. I’m so sorry to hear about your dad. I’ll be there tomorrow. Thanks for asking😘.’
Your bit your lip, you vaguely remembered Joel from family parties, and he was a good friend of your family’s, but you had never really said a word to him, always too occupied with not winding James up.
You left the message as read, and decided to have an evening of housework to get the house somewhat presentable for Joel.
You snuggled up in bed after showering and doing your fake tan Friday routine. Leo, your British Blue kitten, pounced upon your satin sheets and eventually settled for the night with you.
You dozed off, with nothing but hope and positivity in your mind.
