“About what?” he frowned at her, confused. “About us? I realized zhat I did not want to spend my life wizhout you in it.” He nosed at her hair gently.
“Simple enough.” She lifted her head to look at him. “Do you want to eat dinner here tonight? Watch a movie, maybe?”
A cowed and visibly distressed Max knocked on Emily's door. He'd been an idiot, something he'd seemingly gotten very good at lately. "...Fra-...Em? Are you home?" he asked hopefully, not sure if he was hoping she was there or hoping she was gone.
“One sec!” Emily turned off the radio and hopped down from the loft. She wasn’t expecting anyone, but she wasn’t exactly busy either. She pulled the door open and stopped short. Well, that was certainly a surprise. “Max. Hey.” She smiled, tucking her hair behind her ear. “I didn’t think you’d come find me.”

“We lost. We lost big time. But it’s okay. I’m good. It’s cool. I’ve got whiskey. I’m good.” @the-hunter-of-teufort-rp (hi there!)
“I’ll drink to that,” Em agreed tiredly. “Feels like I broke every bone in my body today, and we didn’t even get the intel out of their building.”

“Shit I Overheard at my Law Firm” Sentence Starters
“Just read this fucker and take it to court.”
“Tone down your depositions, A-hole.”
“He may be a buffoon and a fool, but by God he was innocent.”
*grumble grumble* “Sexist bastards.”
“I don’t want to come into work without teeth!”
“That asshole better stop fucking with my client or else I’m gonna…”
“There are only two pears left. I’m naming them Adam and Eve.”
“Organic seaweed? What the hell is organic seaweed?”
“You asking me fishing?… fuck YES I’m there!”
“When the weather gets hot, I just step out on my back porch and pour water over my head for an hour or two. Works every time.”
“He is an artist. Use of Comic Sans in legal documents is his creative outlet.”
“Throw some Wingdings on that shit.”
“What does a person have to do to get a fucking cob salad around here?”
“I’m trying to decide if I should go insane and body-pump or go home and sleep.”
“You can’t just ring a bell, un-ring it, and then ring it again.”
“We lost. We lost big time. But it’s okay. I’m good. It’s cool. I’ve got whiskey. I’m good.”
*applying lipstick to go to the gym* “What kind of a crazy woman wears lipstick to the gym??”
“Are you going to shut up and FISH today?”
“Do you know of any pet friendly cafes? I’m meeting an attorney tomorrow and he’ll have his non-service hunting dog along. Don’t ask why.”
“Publicly, I agree. Personally, I think it’s chickenshit.”
“Keto diet? Is that like for chemo? Ohmygod do you have cancer?!??”
“I don’t have a circle on mine. Where’s my circle?”
“Don’t judge my printouts. Paper is a renewable resource.”
“The stapler has been compromised.”
“You know that one case? The one with the person from the company whose doing some crazy stuff?”
“I wasn’t fishing. I was lawyer-ing. Much less exciting.”
“For a priest, he’s kind of an asshole.”
“Brownies and bourbon? Sounds like my kinda party!”
“I got a bottle of whiskey calling my name so I may not be back here tomorrow morning or ever.”

“Ah. I will let Josef know,” he said wryly. He smiled and kissed her forehead, an arm snaking around her waist. It took him a moment to adjust before getting comfortable. After a few seconds, it felt natural, almost like he belonged there. With a small shake of his head, he remembered that he did, in fact, belong there.
“Oh, hush.” She lightly flicked his nose. “You know you’re my favorite.” She rested her head against his chest and listened to the sound of his heart. God, she’d changed. But that wasn’t a bad thing, she thought. Max, as difficult as he could be, genuinely cared about her.  “What made you change your mind?” she asked.

Emily shrugged, unbothered, and reached down to take off her leg. “I didn’t bury him. But I can’t guarantee anything else.” She took off her glasses too, then immediately draped herself over Max’s chest. “If I wanted a vacation, I wouldn’t have spent three months in the jungle. I’d go somewhere with a pool and a nice big private suite and a mini bar. And hopefully, a handsome German man to keep me company.”

Emily laughed, her arms tight around him. “I love that you can just carry me like it’s nothing.” She kissed his cheek. “I told you about my uncle, right? Well, he sometimes takes people on hunting trips. Long story short, his usual bodyguard-slash-helper dropped out last minute and he asked me to step in.”

There was a pained smile on Max’s face before he kissed her lightly on the lips. “It is silly it took zhis to admit it, ja?” This time when he hugged her, it was warm, lacking the former pain and desperation. “We are bozh big dummies. We deserve each ozhah.”
“We sure are,” she said with a wet laugh. She would not cry. She would not cry. Em hugged him tight, her voice muffled against his shoulder. “I wish you’d gotten my letters. They made me sound really cool.”

Em’s heart skipped a beat. He...loved her? Loved her? She flushed a bright pink, suddenly feeling a little fidgety herself. God, she was going to embarrass herself, wasn’t she? “Yeah, you did screw up pretty badly,” she admitted. “And I was mad—really, really mad—for a while. But I thought about it, and... Ah...” She looked down at her feet. “It was kind of my fault too. For not telling you I was leaving... or that I love you too...” she mumbled.

Emily kissed his hair. “Let’s get inside, okay?” She stepped backwards, pulling him with her, and closed the door with her foot. If he didn’t want to let go yet, she wasn’t going to make him.

“Oh, Max...” She rubbed his back, her other hand holding him tight. “Don’t cry. You know I don’t know how to deal with that,” she joked weakly.  She gently pushed his arm down, wiping his tears herself, and kissed his forehead. “Come on. I’ll make you a cup of tea, yeah?”

“I’m not mad at you, dummy.” She held out her hand. “Come here.” He’d hurt her, yes. But she knew him well enough to know why. And as cute as his chastised fidgeting was, she liked him better when he was happy.

“Absolutely! Come by whenever, I’d love to introduce you,” she said with a smile. “Do wear jeans though. He’ll shred pretty much anything else with those claws. He’s about four feet now and still thinks he can fit in my lap.”
"Hey." Emily tilted her hat up and smiled. "I don't think we've officially met. I'm Emily."
“Oh. Hi, I’m Abigail.” She reached out her hand, ready to give hers a firm shake.

Emily hummed. “You’ve always been... not naive, but inexperienced. And stubborn.” She brushed some hair out of his face. “I don’t think you’re stupid, Max. Being stupid, maybe; it’s like you’ve suddenly decided to ruin your life. But you’re not an idiot.”
There was an exhausted, bruised Soldier laying in front of the door to Em's camper. His glasses were askew and his eye was black. There was liquor on his clothes and breath and he seemed to be unconscious.
“Christ...” Emily sighed. She’d rarely ever seen him look this bad. She knelt down to pick him up, careful to put most of the weight on her good leg. “Come on, up you go...” Holding him up with one arm, she struggled to unlock the door for a few seconds before staggering through it. Max was heavier than he looked, all muscle and dead weight. She just hoped she’d make it to the bed before she dropped him.

He sluggishly moved the ice pack to the floor and put his aching eye on top of it. “Ja, I can keep water in. I do not want to lift my head to drink. It hurts very badly.”
He’d gone off the wagon again and he was ashamed, but the headache was his punishment. Opening his eyes hurt. Everything hurt. “I am glad you were home.”
“I’m glad you came here. Even if it was by accident.” She sat down next to him and casually sipped from the glass. After his little speech last time, she hadn’t expected to see him again.  “If you roll over, I’ll pour some in your mouth,” she joked.
