Unit 10 Evaluation
For unit 10 I tasked myself with 3 main objectives. Those being get 2-3 demo tracks for the 2 game scores (Pure Trauma & Spellslinger) I’m doing and 1 finished track for each of those scores, get the begin of the Pure Trauma script done and do a couple tracks for my solo project done (strawberry//nooc). I’ve achieved this. Getting two versions of the track Battle At Arms (Spellslinger) and the theme for Laurein (one of the villains for Pure Trauma) finished. Titled Last Stroke Of Midnight. The demos I’ve made are the main themes for both Spellslinger and Pure Trauma, a demo theme for the other main villains in Pure Trauma.
Now all the tracks follow a theme of classical and electronics blended together. Demos and finished tracks. This is something I set myself to do from the start, due to my experiences with electronic music yet wanting to try something new and also with the people and scores I wanted to research. The scores being Sherlock Holmes by Hans Zimmer which was a classical themed score but focused more on harpsichords, string and brass. Then Doom by Mick Gordon, which was an electronic centric score with metal components, so deep synths and aggressive synths. Darks Souls III by Motoi Sakuraba with the epic choir sections and fast paced strings. Finally Resident Evil biohazard by Akiyuki Morimoto which had glitchy drums, echo effects and sharp keys and violins.
I believe I was able to take each of these elements from the scores and translate them well into my music. For example:
Last Stroke Of Midnight - This track is main inspired by the song Crystal Saga from Dark Souls III and Love to Death from Resident Evil 7. It uses the deep and slow moving double bass strings through out the tracks, along with gradually progressing violins. Yet also has the glitchy and eerie drums and electronics from Love to Death but also has the slow and somber sound of the keys (just a piano instead of a harpsichord) from Crystal Saga.
Battle At Arms - Now the main influences for this track are BFG Division from Doom and Discombobulate from Sherlock Holmes. This track starts of with the slow, twangy, quirky strings which start to build and progress, from Discombobulate. Not as suddenly though. Along with the deep and buzzing synth bass from BFG Division. As well as having the fasted paced drums and a speedy melody, not as heavy and using a harpsichord (or piano depending of which of the track you look into).
There’s also my script and solo work. Those haven’t been my focus for this project but I’ve been able to get out a couple tracks for my solo work which I’m happy with. I do wish I got further on my script. I did finish the intro and got up to to initial insisted (arriving to the house) but I’d just hope to having gotten further. Overall though I believe I’ve achieved what I needed to and now can just strive forward for FMP...yay.

Researching for Soundtracks
For the style I want for my scores I’ve been looking into Hans Zimmer, Mick Gordon, Akiyuki Morimoto and Motoi Sakuraba. These will be my main inspirations for both the Pure Trauma and Spellslinger scores. Yet I’ll have two of them be the main focus for each score. Hans Zimmer and Mick Gordon will be the main people I’ll follow for Spellslinger and Akiyuki Morimoto and Motoi Sakuraba will be my main focuses for Pure Trauma.
For each composer I’ll have one main score which I’ll look into for my research. They’ll be listed below.
Hans Zimmer - Sherlock Holmes (2010)
Mick Gordon - Doom (2016)
Akiyuki Morimoto - Resident Evil 7: biohazard (2017)
Motoi Sakuraba - Dark Souls 3 (2016)
The reason for quite a lot of different people I want to research is because I want to branch off my sound massively. Music further away from doing electronic music or piano-centric music. For the Spellslinger score I want to make it grandiose, over the top and blend orchestral with low and deep electronic synth rhythms. Then with Pure Trauma I want it to be more stripped back, still keeping quite an epic feel. Yet more of a feeling of intensity. So I’ll keep the orchestral sound with a touch of electronics but instead of using large string sections. Have singular instruments and few instruments (e.g a single violin, piano, bass and drums). Whereas I’d use large ensembles for Spellslinger (e.g String sections, choirs, multiple synths and etc)
The elements I’d take from each score are as followed:
Sherlock Holmes - The use of low horns, the quirky and up tempo tone, harpsichord and large plucked string sections.
Doom - The thunderous pace and drums, aggressive synth bass and the gradual build of tracks.
Resident Evil 7: biohazard - The spacey, airy pianos, deep and slow moving double bass, fast and scratchy strings with breathy and echoing synths and vocal manipulations.
Dark Souls 3 - The eerie and sad violins, the use of choir vocals, suddenly appearing music during a tense or sad moment, the overall feeling of dread but yet epic scope.
Those are all themes, musical techniques and sounds I’d plan to use in my two scores. Picking and choosing from this arsenal to create my sound. Not all of these elements will fit perfectly with in both scores but as I said I wanted a lot of techniques to look into and choose from so I can get the wider scope. Using the same inspirations for both scores.

Unit 10 Plan
For unit 10 I’ll be doing most of my experimentation for my FMP. For FMP I have 3 goals. Get a “pitch package” for a horror game called Pure Trauma (this’ll include a script, concept art for character designs, finished tracks for character themes, main game theme and some other notes and concept work). Along with doing the score for the game Spellslinger, this will be a main theme, battle theme and ambient background music. Finally a couple extra tracks for my solo project, strawberry//nooc.
Now, in unit 10. My plan is to research what kind of styles I’ll use for scores, have a rough starting draft for my script, have some demo track and a couple finished tracks. Mostly though this unit will consist of me experimenting.

UCAS Application + Personal Statement
(personal statement):
I’m a film student at Plymouth college of Art Pre-degree, I’m also learning how to be a music producer, the genres I’ve delved into have been mostly glitch, hip-hop and drum & bass. Plus I’ve done some scores for the short films I’ve made. I’ve been making my own music for about 3 years but have only started releasing it over the past year. Yet I do love writing, this being script writing for film and games. I’ve written multiple rough scripts for short films. Have written, directed and acted in a short film. Which I submitted as my final piece for my first year at Plymouth College of Art. Along with making the music and sound design. I also love writing lyrics for songs and rough concepts for stories. I’m also a beginning to learn aspects of game design, this being lighting effects and sound design. These skills I’m learning in game design, I’m hoping to use in my final piece for my second year at Plymouth College of Art. Where I’m working in a small group to make a game demo, for this my main jobs will be co-writer, lighting and sound (this being sound design and music). Along with that I shall be releasing my album titled “bumblefcuk” which I’ve been working on for about half a year now.
Along with my experience in creative arts, I also have a background in performing arts and teaching. I studied at Plymouth College for primary and secondary school during this period I grew a massive love for acting and comedy. So much so I ended up winning awards at secondary school for my achievements in acting and performing. Due to this my drama teacher invited me to come back for several weeks as a teaching assistant. During this period I helped years 7-9 with their projects. Doing acting exercises and warm up games, giving them constructive criticism on how to improve their performances, giving the students advice and helping them learn lines and grasp concepts like comedic and dramatic timing during plays and etc.
While at this school I also was massively into rugby, I was in the school first team for each year group from year 5 as a tight head prop. I played rugby all the way up until year 10, when I stopped due to injuries. Doing this definitely helped me appreciate working in a team and not be so introverted as a person. Collaborating is a massive part of being a creative to me, being able to hear other people’s opinions, insights and experiences.
Outside of school and creative work, I’ve also been working at Dominos Pizza for over a year. Learning a lot of skills there and maturing too. Working there has definitely helped being in high paced and stressful environments. Now I’m able to cope with those types of work situations.
I want to grow as a creative. Not just be restricted to film. I wish to expand my skills in all areas of interest to me. So doing your course will help me expand in these areas. Which I’m excited about. Doing something new will grow me as an individual and a creative. As I’ve already done a film course. That’s why I’m applying to your course, you can offer me something new and can allow me to improve in the areas I’ve done on my own and help grow in my professionalism for these areas.
In the future I see myself being able to work in multiple areas of art and creative media. Expanding into music, film and game. I’d wish to become a jack of all trades. I don’t want to settle in one specific area, I want to spread my reach as a creative. I’d love to be a music producer, writer for games or film, a film director or a composer for films and games. Ideally I want to achieve all of this, in the end. So growing as an artist is what I need to do - try something new next and progress in my practise as a creative and as an individual. I’m hoping that in doing your course this will give me the skills and knowledge to get me closer to my goal. Having the chance to do another new thing and do that new thing in a professional environment.

my aspirations for life are of course to do well in finally year at PCA Pre-degree, go to university, get a degree and qualifications and etc. Yet after that...what do I want to do? Well quite a lot to be honest.
In short, I’d hope to become a jack of all trades in the creative/entertainment. I want to carry on with my “strawberry//nooc” music project. Do more film, whether that’s music videos, short films or even hopefully be a part of a feature film. Either as a director or writer. I’d love to do film and game scores too. Along with all that I want to dip my toes into doing fashion design and also working on games.
With games it’s the area I have the least amount of experience with but I would love to study a course in game audio or game writing. Although it’s definitely my weakest area (in terms of pure experience) I have been learning some areas of game design. Doing composite work (lighting effects) and will be doing a couple tracks for a short game I’ll be working on.
So, overall with my future I don’t have a set plan. I don’t have one thing I’m set on doing. There’s so much I want to do. In the end, my real dream is just be a jack of all trades, not just be known for one thing.

(i bii STRESSED 4 this) Evaluation

My product is an Electronic music EP along with t-shirts to promote the music project as a whole. The project I’ve made is called strawberry//nooc and EP title is “i bii STRESSED” and this EP and the t-shirts are all linked to an album that will released in the summer of 2019 called “bumblefcuk”.
Now this project is quite a weird and experimental sound but I think that this type of music has commercial apply to the 16-21 year old audience. Particularly in a live setting, clubs, parties or even as just music for people to listen to who want a different vibe. Then also the design of the t-shirts have a interesting and cool looking design. That does help fit in with the sound of the music. So this music and entire project has an audience which does mainly certain around the music lovers. People who go to concerts, clubs and etc and people who would just like to listen to something different.
This was information I found out from my form and people coming up to me and giving me feedback. A very common comparison I got was people saying that it felt like it would fit in with a video game. I do agree with this, so I believe gamers who would enjoy this too. With the age of my target audience, having all my work being promoted online (facebook, instagram, etc), it means that I can be easier to find for the audience I’m tapping into.
With my research, it did help me a lot trying to find some different sound which have been big. Mainly in the music fan audience but which have bled into the mainstream, the biggest being Aphex Twins, deadmau5 & Brockhampton. So this meant I can experiment with a bunch of different sounds but still gave me the confidence that there is an audience for what I’m trying to do.
I believe that overall my project went well but had some massive falls. The main one being the failed music video shoot. Everyone dropping out last minute and then the camera man losing all the footage. Yet it did have a lot of ups. Them being seeing the amount of people who were actually interested and enjoying the music I created. Along with that though I didn’t end up selling all the t-shirts, sold 2/5. I’ve been promoting them on all the online pages I have and having them being sold at the native creators event along with the clothes Molly has been selling. Although there have been downs, I believe it mostly has gone well. Definitely to piece of work I am happiest with out of all the work I’ve done.
In the future I could improve more on the actual production side. Just improving my skills in general. Also I think I should experiment with more sounds and step away from just Glitch and Drum & Bass. Also Maybe have some other t-shirt designs and variety. So in general I think my improvements are mainly centred around my general production skills and just having more variety and options in my work.
From this project I’ve learnt how to self promote online and to be more unique. Not to worry so much about how weird my work might be to someone. In the end there’s an audience for the music I’m making. Just need to be able get the word out there more and improve with practice. I’ve also learnt that overloading myself is never a good idea. I think my original idea wouldn’t have worked, having the music video, which I’d have to edit. The EP, which I planned to be 4-5 tracks instead of 3. Then along with doing the t-shirts. Trying to fit that all in was making me too stressed. So cutting it down to 3 tracks and having the video cut, although not planned, in the end helped a lot. Even though I feel I need more variety in the work being able to “trim the fat” so to speak is a useful lesson to learn.
The lessons I’ve learnt in self promotion, the confidence grown and learning to tighten projects, I believe will help be progress as a creative. Now I know to not overload, try even more new things and keep my work stream lined. Cut the bloat and just focus on all the important stuff. That way it can be of a higher quality. Also will mean I’m in a better mind set as I won’t be as stressed as I was during this. In the end I can happily say that this is my favourite work, thus far.
