A horrific scene greeted officials when they arrived in Jonestown on 21 November 1978. Three dats before, over 900 members of the People’s Temple had committed suicide by drinking Kool Aid laced with cyanide while loudspeakers intoned “We will meet again in another place”. Rev Jim Jones, the mentally unstable leader of Jonestown, ordered all his followers to kill themselves after the US sent a diplomat to investigate claims of abuse within the complex. If people refused the poison they were shot, and only four people survived the massacre, which was the largest loss of American life in a single incident until the events of 9/11.

17 years ago, on April 20 1999, occured one of the deadliest school shootings in USA. 15 people died that day and several others were injured at Columbine high school. The perpetrators, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, both friends, commited suicide after the attack.

Dennis Rader - Childhood

Dennis Rader was born in a quiet corner of Kansas, close to where Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri all meet, on March 9, 1945. He was the first of four sons born to William and Dorothea Rader. He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Pittsburg, Kansas. His father was a member of the US Marine Corps, who later worked for the electric utility KG&E starting in 1948. The family moved to the largest city in Kansas, Wichita, when Dennis was a young boy. The Raders settled into a modest but pleasant home on N. Seneca Street, which remained continually as a Rader household until sold in 2005.

As a child, Dennis Rader appeared outwardly normal and unremarkable. He joined the Boy Scouts as a youth and participated in church youth group activities. He attended Riverview Elementary School, where he was an average to mediocre student with withdrawn tendencies.

By his own admission, he says he developed fantasies about bondage, control and torture from an early age, while still in grade school. As he became sexual he dreamed of tying girls up and having his way with them. The Mouseketeer Annette Funicello was one of his favorite targets for imaginary bondage. He admits to having killed cats and dogs such as by hanging them as a youth. He learned he had to keep his developing inner world of bondage, torture and death a secret from everyone, and he did a good job of doing so.

Those who knew him personally describe a quiet and polite young man who preferred to keep to himself. Dennis Rader was not a joiner or known to be very socially active in high school. The young Dennis showed no interest in the music of the times. One friend described him as utterly lacking a sense of humor, but tending to be studious and focused. He was described as a person who chose his words before speaking, and who would give you his full attention as he spoke.

Considering how meticulous and cunning serial killers tend to be, it is almost impossible to fathom that one little slip-up at the hands of these murderers tend to be what leads to their capture. For example, at the time he was wanted for murder, Ted Bundy was pulled over for driving a car at night with a broken taillight. For David Berkowitz, Son of Sam, someone witnessed him tearing up a parking ticket near the scene of one of his attacks. Fourteen years after the BTK killings, Dennis Rader sent a message on a floppy disk to the police department, and they tracked it to his church and then to Dennis himself. Andrei Chikatilo appeared in public with blood on his hands and face, near where one of his victims was later found. Lastly, the notorious Richard Ramirez was essentially linked to the Night Stalker murders after carelessly leaving his fingerprint on a stolen car he abandoned–the same car that was seen driving away from his victims’ home after killing them.

Martin Bryant shortly after his arrest, trying to get authorities to reveal how many people he killed during the Port Arthur Massacre. The excitement on his face is quite evident throughout the interview. On 28 April, 1996, Bryant shot and killed David and Sally Martin, the owners of a local Bed & Breakfast. Following this, Bryant made his way to Port Athur to begin what would become one of the world’s deadliest shootings committed by one perpetrator, indiscriminately killing 35 people and wounding another 23. Martin Bryant is currently serving 35 life sentences plus 1,035 years without parole.

Columbine Victims:

Cassie Bernall: Cassie was a seventeen year old “born again” Christian. Her nickname was “Bunny Rabbit.” She was shot twice by Eric Harris, once in the hand and once in the head. She died instantly.

Daniel Mauser: Danny was an exceptionally bright student who excelled in math and science. He was apart of the debate team and loved swimming and hiking. He was shot once in the face by Eric Harris, he died almost within three minutes.

Steven Curnow: Steven was 14 years old, a great soccer player, who also worked as a referee. He loved Spanish, technology, and gym class. He was shot in the neck by Eric Harris. He died within seven minutes.

Lauren Townsend: Lauren was 18 years old, captian of the varsity volleyball team. She was an all A student who loved animals and hiking. Her nickname was “Lulu” and she was a very talented sketch artist. She was shot approximately nine times by Dylan Klebold. She died within two minutes.

Kelly Fleming: Kelly was 16 years old and a beautiful poet. She loved to write, read and draw. She loved to read books about vampires. She was also under the same table as Lauren. Kelly was shot in the lower back by Dylan Klebold. She died within 3-6 minutes.

Isaiah Shoels: Isaiah was a minority at Columbine High, being one of few African Americans. He was on the school’s football and wrestling team. He was born with a severe heart condition, but overcame it as the years went on. He was shot in the chest by Eric Harris. He died within two minutes.

Matt Kechter: Matt was 16 years old and sitting under the same table as Isaiah. He was in the National Honors Society and was on the Columbine’s football team. He had all As and was very bright. He was shot in the chest by Dylan Klebold. He died within three minutes.

Corey DePooter: Corey was 17 and wanted to be in the Marine Corps. He loved fishing, hiking, hunting, and golf. He worked at a golf course to save up for a new car. He got good grades, never caused trouble and was on the schol’s wrestling team freshman and sophomore year. He was shot seven times by Dylan Klebold. He died almost instantly. 

Rachel Scott: Rachel was 17 years old and is probably one of the most well known victims due to her lying parents and brother. Rachel was heavily involved in drama club and was in many plays. She was shot three times, arm, chest, and head, by Eric Harris. She died instantly.

Dave Sanders: Dave was a 47 year old staff member at Columbine. He was a well known coach for many sports team and was trying hard to evacuate students from the cafeteria and hallways while Eric and Dylan were shooting. He was shot three times by Eric Harris. Unfortunately, he died within three hours.

Kyle Velasquez: Kyle was 16 years old, and was known as a “gentle giant.” He loved his family dearly and suffered from asthma and mental disabilities. He wanted to be a firefighter. He was shot in the head by Dylan Klebold. He died instantly.

John Tomlin: John was 16 years old, and was a weight lifter. He was Christian and loved to help others out. He had a seven month relationship with his girlfriend, Michelle. He was shot in the chest by Eric Harris, but fatally in the head by Dylan Klebold. He died almost instantly.

Daniel Rohrbough: Daniel was 15 years old and loved electronics and computer games. He helped his father with stereos and his grandfather with harvesting . He was shot abdomen and leg once, then shot again in the chest by Dylan Klebold. He died within five minutes.

Eric Harris: Eric was 18 years old, and one of the two gunman. He spoke fluent German, got good grades and was very bright. He worked as a cook and shift manager at a pizza place called Blackjack. He died by a self inflicted gunshot wound to the roof of the mouth. He died instantly.

Dylan Klebold: Dylan was 17 years old, and the other gunman. He spoke French and German and was exceptionally good at math. He worked as a cook at Blackjack, and was accepted to University of Arizona. He died of a self inflicted gunshot wound to the left temple. He died within five minutes.
