Korean Through Games: Hongsam (홍삼)

This game (like a lot of Korean games) is played with the same beat as the Frying Pan game (lap clap right thumb left thumb)

Intro:

아싸 홍삼 에브리바디 홍삼! 🎵

아 lap 싸 clap 홍 right 삼 left 에브리 lap 바디 clap 홍 right 삼 left

아싸 | assa (general cheer)

홍삼 | red ginseng

에브리바디 | Korean pronunciation of everybody

Rules:

첫 번째로 시작한 사람은 “아싸~ 너! 너!” 라고 외치며 두 사람을 지목합니다

The first person to start yells, “Assa~ you! You!” and picks two people

지목을 당한 두 사람은 “아싸~ 너!”라고 외치며 각자 한 명씩 다른 사람을 선택합니다. 속도가 빠를수록 게임의 난이도는 높아지니 스피드를 점점 UP 시켜주세요~!

Those two chosen people yell, “Assa~ you!” and each choose a person. The faster the speed, the higher the level of difficulty, so slowly speed up how fast you go!

서로 다른 사람을 지목하다 두 사람이 한 사람을 동시에 지목했다면 지목 당한 사람이 “아싸~ 홍삼~!” 이라고 말하며 자신만의 제스처를 보여줍니다. 그럼 다른 사람들도 모두 함께 “에브리바디~ 홍삼~!” 이라고 외치며 제스처를 따라 해야 합니다.

If the two people both pick the same person, the chosen person has to say, “Assa hongsam!” while doing a gesture of their choosing. And everyone else has to follow by responding with “everybody hongsam!”

그리고 지목을 받은 사람이 다시 처음으로 돌아가 “아싸~ 너! 너!” 라고 외치며 두 명을 지목합니다. 

And the person who was chosen has to start over from the beginning with, “Assa~ you! You!” and pick two people.

*you lose by not responding/choosing someone after being pointed at. ( basically if you miss your turn, you lose)*

Loser usually has to drink or receive some type of punishment

냄새 vs 향기

There can be quite a bit of confusion when it comes to using 냄새 or 향기. I think if you look both of them up, they will probably come back as “smell” (the noun). But there’s a couple different uses for both

냄새

Usually this is used in bad cases, but there are obviously exceptions

술 - alcohol

음식 - food

발 - feet

겨드랑이 - armpit

풀 - grass/glue

똥 - poo

가솔린 - gasoline

커피 - coffee (can be used with either)

향기

Usually this is used more positively and can translate more to aroma/fragrance. Sometimes you will see it written as 향.

비누 - soap

꽃 - flowers

로션 - lotion

샴푸 - shampoo

커피 - coffee

Sample Sentences

우리가 클럽을 떠난 후에 철수는 술 냄새 났어. After we left the club, Cheolsu smelled like alcohol.

한강은 봄에 꽃 향기 나요. The Han River smells like flowers in the spring.

네가 냄새나서 좀 싰어라! Go shower cause you stink!

난 일어나자마자 커피 향 맡았다. I smelled coffee as soon as I got up.

어 빵 냄새… 먹고 싶다…! I smell bread… I want some!

향이 강하다 | to smell strong

향이 약하다 | to smell weak

냄새 좋다 | to smell good

냄새 빠지다 | for a smell to go away

짙은 향이 | strong/heavy smell

냄새 고약하다 | to smell foul

DMZ Trip: 3/16/19

My favorite experience so far since I got here has been my trip to the DMZ Third Tunnel.

I went with a really big group from my class and it was amazing. The bus we took had disco lights and cool curtains ans we listed to a bunch of random Korean songs and American 90s songs on the way there. I think at one point we were all singing along to ‘Breaking Free’ from High School Musical.
