Wáng Hàoxī (王浩西) pronunciation guide

written for english speakers by a mandarin speaker and an approx. general american english speaker (= i might make generalizations not applicable to your english accent) i will not be covering tones, so you will never quite sound like the language samples. chinese names are written surname first, so, first up:

王 (wáng) is his surname. Here is an audio sample:

the "a" in this word is not the english "a" as in ape, but closer to the "a" as in father. the "w" and "ng" are both what you should expect, "w" like "wet" and "ng" like "song". it should sound pretty close to wong.

浩 (hào) is the first character of his first name. Here is an audio sample:

this is pretty much the english "how" but ending more with an o sound, so leaving your mouth more open than you usually would. this tone is very easy to attempt (and i think the most noticeable) try saying it like you're angry or giving an order. hao! the tone goes from high to low.

西 (xī) is the second character of his first name. Here is an audio sample:

this x sound is one we don't have in english, so it might take some time to get used to. try saying "sh" as in "sheep", and move your tongue forward and closer to your teeth (but not touching anything) while still exhaling air. the sound should sound like a high pitched hiss. keep your tongue in that position and say the english word "she".
