Finally got some photos of this year's Words of Courage broadside! aah it seems so long ago already. weird couple months.

WoC is a yearly publication of poetry broadsides written by patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital, and designed, printed, and bound into portfolios by local letterpress & book artists. this year’s whole edition will be scanned and posted there in a couple weeks & previous years are always there to see!

Had a couple ideas going into this one, for instance, when you say to me "illustrate a horse" i think first of like. umberto boccioni. the violent dynamism of the futurist, etc. that is the kind of unshackled strength i associate with Horse. and i did very much enjoy that phase of research but thought it was perhaps not the exact energy to bring to this project. my second thought about horses was of course Muybridge*, whose Animals in Motion has been in the house since I was a kid, and i figured, Mac has got a lot of sides to him, why not triple expose him on the film?

inking distribution on Mac's linos, i'll be honest, was kind of a nightmare, since there was a problem with a set screw in my roller carriage :( i fixed it after, but i had to just make it work at the time. BUT i got to use Melior for the text which is one of my absolute favorite faces, and it matches so nice with Eden Bold which says MAC so well, and the registration on all the lino colors was really really good. there's some quite cool tangents and intersections between the 3 transparent layers of Mac that i like a lot for how tightly registered they are, & the little slivers of paper they leave open.

* joke's on me, turns out Muybridge brings his own bizarre energy by association. hadn't heard about the murder until after i'd finished the piece.

"My Mac—   He’s a big boy, but he’s so gentle.   He’s picky. He doesn’t like  watermelon, peppermint, or sugar,  but he loves carrots and apples.  I tried to feed him a lemon,  but I don’t think he liked it.    He’s very friendly to other horses. They’ll put  him in between two other horses,  like between two mares that maybe don’t get along,  to help things out. Everyone gets along with him.     I’d say his favorite color is green, a lime green, because his halter and lead rope are lime green,  and his fly boots are lime green.  (Fly boots keep the flies from chewing on him.) But all of his riding tack— his bridle, his saddle, his bell boots—are red.    He’s energetic. He loves to run.  He gets excited when it starts to rain—  you can just feel him energized.  But if you tell him to slow down, he’ll listen.   He likes to run really fast in the arena.  It makes me so nervous when he runs up to the fence— he runs right up to it— and then slows down at the last second.    He’s very food-driven.  In the arena,  if we leave the gate open and he gets out,  you’ll always find him at the nearest grass.   His name is Mac."

Just found your session notes on ao3, and just wanted to come here to thank you for still using bang!tags correctly! It’s one bit of fandom culture/language that I’ve been very sad to see falling out of use over the past several years, so it was really nice to see them on your fics ❤️

Now that you mention it, I've noticed them falling out of use recently, too; I switch back and forth between them for my own fics (oops), but that format definitely comes more naturally to me, having been writing fic in earnest for...Christ, a decade and a half now.

It's an artifact of not only the early days of internet fandom, but also the early days of the internet period - something I just recently learned and found very cool. I know it's not exactly needed now on AO3 and other sites, but it's still kind of a bummer to see it becoming more and more archaic. Especially since it persisted strongly enough through the decades between the earliest email routing schema and the early '10s that I picked it up without even questioning it.

(On the other hand, might be kind of interesting from a sociological standpoint, being able to date someone's involvement in fandom based on their use of it. Almost like an accent!)

jon being silly-goofy for so much of season 5 ("methinks the spider doth protest too much," playing I spy, etc) but it's because the eye is in full power and pumping him with so much dopamine that he actually has the energy to goof around. he's full of energy and endorphins but it's all because he's powered by everyone else's suffering. makes you think.

decided a while back to have a go at making some character portraits for the cast of TMA :) obviously had to do the antichrist and his plus one first :) the vibe is supposed to be a little creepy/unsettling

Basic pattern here.

I love Tim so goddamn much. And after what I did to him in my latest fanfic, I felt like he really, really deserved a hug. He worked up a lot faster than I expected, too - I guess I’m getting better at this pattern, which means (if the variations aren’t TOO out of this world), I can finish one in about a week! And this despite half the games this week getting rained out…

Tim varies from the standard pattern as follows:

Shoes: I didn’t forget to do the soles a different color; they’re dress shoes, so the same color black sole as upper. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Trousers: I did Tim’s trousers the same way as usual, really. (Okay, so it was a while before I got to the variations. Sue me.)

Shirt: I mostly followed the standard pattern for Tim’s shirt, up until the top. The first thing I did was wait until the very end to decrease his shoulders (I meant for them to come out more square than they did, but here we are). The second thing is that I decreased his neck down to 15 instead of 18 to make it a bit thinner. I decided I wanted Tim in a polo, so when I hit the top of the neck, I slip stitched around to just to one side of the neck, then chained 3, dc in front loop of next st, hdc in front loop of next st, sc in front loop of next 9 sts, hdc in front loop of next st, dc in front loop of next st, fasten off. It actually came out like I wanted!

Head: This may be the first time in a whilA close-up of the doll's face, highlighting his eyes and smilee I did the stitch count exactly right, so go me. Anyway, I did Tim’s scalp in black and then looped in the hair like usual, with occasional burgundy (auburn) highlights because that was how I described him in Forget. (I also deliberately made his smile the mirror to Gerry’s.)

Arms: I decided Tim was wearing a polo shirt, so I did his arms more or less the same way I did Gerry’s - following the base pattern with the skin color up to R20, then R21 in the shirt color in hdc, then finishing out in the shirt color in sc before stitching on.

And yes, I did his arms on purpose so he could hold hands with Gerry.
