Split phase induction motor

the capacitor start (CS) or, more precisely, a start induction motor capacitor is an induction motor modified split phase used for loads difficult to start. CS motors are efficient and require starting currents approximately 5 times their full load currents .

The diagram in Figure 1 shows that the CS motor circuit is the same SP that the motor circuit, except that it comprises a centrifugal starting switch and an AC electrolytic capacitor of low value in series with the start winding.

Performance requirements for various types of induction motors intended for use on standard sine wave power supplies are identified in NEMA MG1. Some of these types of motors can be used in variable speed applications, depending on the type of application.
