RELOCATING TO ST PETE - 4 Checklist Items

If you are thinking of Relocating to St Pete do NOT forget these important items that many people neglect or just don't realize! 

 MOST IMPORTANT - MANY MANY people wrongly think everything will transfer with them when they move including Health Insurance....Not the case YOU CANNOT TRANSFER INSURANCE ACROSS STATE LINES - be sure to speak with your Health Ins Carrier about the steps you need to take make certain your coverage continues and is not interrupted. Registering your car...... as soon as you can head to the DMV. For every vehicle you own you will need to be issued a new license plate! (Approx $225 per unit depending on many factors) This license plate is attached to your name and can transfer to other vehicles when you buy and sell - DO NOT sell your vehicle in FL and allow the buyer to take your license plate!  YIKES! SO if you have two cars and an RV and a Motorcycle and a boat - put money in the piggy bank to cover those new plates. Check here for more info  https://www.flhsmv.gov/ Don't say I didn't Say! 

Filing Homestead Exemption in FL - When you buy a home in FL be sure to file for homestead as soon as you are able, usually between Jan 1 and March 1 of the year following purchase. (looks like you can do this online now!) Sometimes the homestead value will transfer temporarily until you do your bit. Forget and it will cost you, and there is no back dating with this one! Homestead (primary residence status) affords you tax savings up to the first $50,000 in property appraiser value - the first $25k is all taxes the 2nd $25k is everything BUT schools. If you own property in FL and are getting married speak to an Attorney regarding Homestead and how it relates to married couples. Don't say I didn't Say! 

Speaking of Taxes - Local St Pete Sales TAX is 7%, this includes 6% State and 1% Local, local being Pinellas County (St Pete does NOT have an add on) we are near the top for low sales tax among the 50 States; THERE IS NO TAX ON MANY ITEMS at the grocery store YAY!!!! Florida is one of the few states that doesn't charge tax on your food :) AND .... Florida is one of only 7 states that has no Personal State Income Tax WHOOP WHOOP! To take advantage of this you must be a resident, get your license, your car tags, open a bank account with a FL address - get it done get those savings! Don't say I didn't Say!
