i don't see enough love for this dude (or at least for t-johnson's portrayal of this man), mostly judgement or hate, and i don't really understand why, so here goes, i guess.

jamie is as admirable as he is flawed. at times infuriating, he is a good father and a shitty husband, but he's not a villain.

spike doesn't reject him or the island community in the end, he takes time to reflect and heal; come to terms with everything he's been through while away from the place that has way too many reminders of his mother and his father's fuck ups. he's bitter towards his dad — not hateful, not vengeful; he's bitter and he is in mourning. i don't think that him staying away from the island or his father has anything to do with "refusal" of their raging "violence". no way he would've left a newborn baby — named after his mother, by the way — with a "backwards, no good" community and a "violent" dad whose ways he's completely rejected and whose personality he despises.

i will repeat, jamie is not a villain — that'd be sir jimmy crystal — he's not a bad person, not a violent "patriarchy stereotype", not even a bad dad, not really. he's all but human — complex, flawed and imperfect, like all of us. he boasts, he cheats, he gets angry. he also cares, he loves and he protects those close to him. he's able to care deeply, and he's able to take care (he still takes care of isla in the beginning of the film, putting up with her anger and confusion episodes, and doesn't abandon her or his son). judging solely by his actions, jaime is not half as awful as some people paint him to be.

i loved this character.
