Paul as Marwood is such a marvelous example of subtle acting deserving of all the awards. I love REG and I don't mind him getting all the credit he deserved for Withnail and I, but people often overlook how fantastic Paul was in the role. He has such a great command on the character. Every single subtle movement and tone of voice and facial expression. I wish he got more credit for that portrayal.

if you’ll allow me to ramble a bit, there’s something about marwood in particular that i really really love as one of paul’s roles that i think shows both how good an actor paul is and how good a director bruce robinson is:

and that’s the fact that marwood doesn’t feel like paul mcgann to me. like, i’ve seen almost all of paul’s roles at this point. i know paul’s body language, i know his cadence etc to the point that ngl, most of the time when i watch something with him in it i just see him as paul at this point. i’m like “awww, paul” instead of “awww, [character name]” haha. but that’s never really been the case with marwood. marwood is so marwood.

a big part of that is a good actor and a good director working together. i watched the withnail commentary and at one point paul comments on this moment:

and he says “that’s not my smile. that’s bruce’s smile.” and shit, he’s right. so much of paul’s body language in withnail and i isn’t his own- paul doesn’t do nervous, dead-eyed smiles like that in any other role. that was a specific character choice for marwood, imposed well by bruce and acted out perfectly by paul. it’s the same with his cadence: it’s so unique to marwood as a result of bruce being so specific about how he wanted lines delivered, and how capable paul was at delivering them in that way.

like i know this is prob something that most ppl don’t notice when they watch withnail and i, bc for most ppl it’s one of the only paul roles they’ve seen, but having watched so many myself it’s obvious to me how different paul’s performance as marwood is from his other performances. like all of paul’s work, its incredibly subtle but still so impressive. i have nothing but awe and admiration for the work richard e grant did in the film, but i don’t think it would be the success it is today if not for paul’s incredibly funny, nuanced portrayal of marwood as well.

idk, it just really makes me wish paul had more chances to work with directors as talented as bruce. paul is really, really talented guy, but it’s good directors who can pull even more out of talented actors and allow them an outlet to do their best.
