i love the ‘hopper is okay with will being gay and dating a guy but hates that it’s mike’ trope but the better trope is ‘hopper is okay with will being gay and dating a guy but hates that it’s mike until he sees this total change in mike’. unlike how mike was with el, mike and will are not constantly making out and sneaking off to suck face somewhere. instead, they talk, draw together, actually DO things together instead of just kissing which was what hopper solely saw el and mike doing. he notes that mike seems happier and more like himself and that he makes will happy and he treats him with respect and love. then he starts to like mike a little bit.

all in all, i think that hopper’s problem with mike is that he knew that milkdud was super toxic and he blamed it on mike.

one take I have on the (insincerely) in mike’s response to the “playing nintendo and dnd for the rest of our lives” line is that– perhaps it’s insincere because mike has realized over the past several months, as he’s been playing dnd and nintendo over the span of all of those months, that he wants to do more with will than just play dnd and nintendo in his basement.

don’t get me wrong, I still think he does want that as well, but perhaps he wants things to change as they’ve gotten older to include doing other things as well that, you know, couples would do. That differentiate them from being just friends, as they’ve always been. So his response is insincere because yeah, he likes those things, but he’s been hoping to do more with will that goes beyond the boundaries of friendship– even “best” friendship. and likely he believes, both due to heteronormativity and his own crippling self doubt, that playing games is really all will wants to do with him– that will is showing that he doesn’t feel the same romantic feelings for him, and doesn’t want their dynamic to change towards something romantic.

I want to keep in mind that mike has been shown to be heavily influenced by conventionality– through his parents’ modeling and through media alike, so his idea of what people do when they’re in love is also pretty conventional; and that’s not all bad, particularly– in this case I think it just means he may be yearning to do some of the conventional “couple” things with will that he’s done with el (and felt lacking doing with her), but this time with someone he’s actually in love with and feels compelled to do these things with. I’m talking like, going on dates, dancing at a school dance, stealthily making out when they have the opening to, showing any sort of pda, etc. again– of course he loves dnd and Nintendo and wouldn’t reject that being part of their lives as well, but I think maybe he just wants more than that, and that– both due to some of his wants being nearly impossible simply due to being queer (being “normal” prom dates for one another and dancing in public, for example) and because he believes will doesn’t want the same thing– what he wants is impossible and futile.

the more I think, the more I’m convinced how they planned not only byler, but the willel bond since the beginning. and their dynamics are going to be the core of s5.

and if i was going to lose you, i’d rather just get it over with. like ripping off a bandaid.

ripping off the bandaid isn’t will getting over mike - it’s will losing mike. why does will think he’s lost mike? BECAUSE HE THINKS THAT HE’S JUST PUSHED HIM AND ELEVEN TOGETHER. because will’s veiled confession, in his mind, pushes mike away from him and towards el. rather than suffering with watching mike be confused about el, rather than drawing it out, will uses his own feelings to get mike and el together, to get the ‘losing mike’ part over with. 

it’s so sad because mike is finally doubting his relationship with el, and will, instead of taking advantage of that, or even getting some hope that mike could maybe like him back after all, just wants mike to be happy, and to rip off that bandaid, so to speak. he’s not just pushing mike and eleven together, but he’s telling mike that he’s losing him, and he’d just rather get it over with. i literally can’t express this coherently lmao my brain doesn’t seem to be working, but. it’s not about will moving on from mike, it’s about him using his feelings to propel milkshake together, and therefore thinking that he’s lost mike for it.

so in conclusion, this script doesn’t actually change anything, it’s just kinda reinforcing what we’ve known all along - that will thinks mike doesn’t love him, and would rather happily with eleven than give himself anymore ‘false’ hope.
