Heat Pumps in Cold Climates: Are They Worth It
Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs): The most common type, ASHPs extract heat from the outside air. They are easy to install and generally cost-effective, though their efficiency can decrease in extremely cold climates.
Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs): Also known as geothermal heat pump, GSHPs extract heat from the ground or a nearby water source. These systems are highly efficient because ground temperatures are more stable than air temperatures, but they require more space and higher installation costs.
Water Source Heat Pumps: These systems use a body of water, such as a lake or pond, to extract heat. They are less common and typically used in specific settings where a suitable water source is available.
Hybrid Heat Pumps: These systems combine a heat pump with a traditional furnace or boiler. The system can switch between the heat pump and the traditional heating system depending on which is more efficient, optimizing energy use.
