BFA student's work was recently discovered by a BYU Magazine photographer, Jaren Wilkey.  This photograph was posted on the BYU Photo page and quickly spread like wildfire across our online community.  It wasn't until Area Head, Fidalis Buehler, responded to Wilkey's request for any information about the work that Arthur Morrill was connected to the street-installations.  Art's in the process of receiving credit for his work.

Exhibit A, Hannah Wertz BFA final show, November 17-30, 2011
Abstract:
May 2010: Walked into the North Rim Campground at the Grand Canyon and left wanting to know more about Aspen trees. Plan to study all aspects of one tree with blind experimentation using art and amateur scientific process.
October 2011: Conclusion: N/A. Only documentation of time spent exploring using books and numbers and drawings and lectures trying to understand this living thing. Results include, but not limited to, observations on humility, inward realization of deeper connection to natural processes, appreciation of process of experimentation [where making one choice multiplies knowledge exponentially], a personal relationship with an inanimate object. Still evading total comprehension [see Exhibit A].
“Level One and Level Two”
Oil on panel, 3X4’
Large white board, dry erase marker
“The Relative Frequency and Position of Positive and Negative Emotions Over 365 Days of My Life”
Pencil and paper, 4X10’
Visual representation of my emotional state between April 10, 2010 and April 11, 2011. Left axis is a scale of my happiness between 15 and -15 plotted with dots for each separate day and how happy I was at the time from reading through data collected in my journals. I connected all of the dots within 18 inches of each other (the size of my ruler) because every moment and emotion is relative to the moments before and after.
“Let’s Try Climbing It”
Video, 4 min 50 sec
“I still don’t know anything, really”
Installation; fishing line and nails plotted using a cross section of one Aspen tree cell

Art is not about art, claims Nick Bonterno, a graduate student at Brigham Young University.
Then what is art about?
Nick approaches his portraits with a specific goal in mind: portray the feelings of the sitters. It is very much about the spirit of the people, something that does not dissipate or vary with time. He seeks to rebel against transient art. Such pieces seek to converse with the social or political commentaries of their day. These sorts of dialogues change with the time, differing depending on the demands and urges of the day. But for the people and scenes in his pieces, Nick wants to create permanence. He wants to freeze in time the emotions of the sitters, creating a lasting effect.
For Nick, his portraiture is a search for identity. His inspiration derives from nineteenth century American art, a time when American artists had no identity. With no formal schooling, they were forced to work with the materials and subjects available to them. In this way, the art was culturally radical and conservative at the same time. Nick sees his art in much the same way, echoing a sense of conservatism as he reaches into the past that is familiar and comforting to him, a sort of “humanistic escapism” for the viewer.
“Essentially I’m kind of a hippie,” Nick confesses.
-Emaline Maxfield, an undergrad Art History major
