METAL
I am metal
an alloy
bonded by the elements
I've met throughout my lifetime
atomically structured to be
stainless, durable, resistant and strong
ionic bonds give and take
making me stable
unreactive by design
I am metal
free electrons are what define me
negativity has shaped me
provided me a purpose
heat and electricity
can flow right through me
for all I care
because I am metal.
I am metal
coated in luster, sheen, and shine
scratches and abuse
do not scar me
resilience is my strength.
I am metal.
but like metal,
humans can only take so much
I will eventually rust with time
Purpose:
The purpose of this poem is poetry as expression because it is an expression of my identity, I am comparing the “I” to metal, which is a metaphor for many the many qualities and characteristics “I” possess.
Organization:
I chose to write this poem in free verse because it gives me the liberty to express my thoughts in any vocabulary, without the restriction of following a specific rhyming, pattern and meter scheme.
Style:
“I am metal” repeated throughout this poem, metal is a metaphor used to compare myself to the physical qualities that metal and I share, such as “stainless, durable, resistant and strong”. Personification is seen in the line “Negativity has shaped me”, as negativity (referring to electrons) is not a physical entity and can’t literally “shape” me. “Electrons” are also a symbol, referring to my life struggles or “negativity”, and their effect it had on me as a person.
Theme:
The theme of this poem is that despite how strong someone may appear on the surface, all humans have a breaking point. The last line is comparing human to metal. It is revealed that metal, which was initially described as tough, rust too. If metal rust, it is valid for humans to emotionally break down.

STATE OF MIND
the mind is a vehicle
hungry for a rush
eager to torment
all of your conscious existence
like the fashion of space
demanding your whole world to be gulped
your thoughts are churned
into only a chunk of matter
psychological pain is
practically unbearable
Purpose:
The purpose of this poem is poetry as therapy because it is describing the experience of struggling psychologically through the perspective of the victim. Organization:
I chose to write my poem in a single stanza, because my poem has a very linear message and idea, each line is related to the previous. Style:
In this poem, analogy was used to compare the human mind to “the fashion of space”, they are similar only in the context of this poem with the idea that, like the way a black hole can suck matter in space, your mind can suck your happiness and will to live. The line “psychological pain is practically unbearable” is a hyperbole to exaggerate the intense pain victims go through, which often leads to suicide. “Vehicle” is another analogy for the mind in this poem, it is said to be “hungry for a rush”, meaning to crave adrenaline. Since the human mind cannot literally be “hungry”, it is a form of personification.
Theme:
The theme of this poem is that sometimes our negative emotions and anxiety, are irrational, it’s just the result of our minds over-thinking. The analogy of the mind as a “vehicle”, tells us that sometimes our minds have nothing better to do than to over-think, or “rush”.

REMEDY
I’m desperate for a remedy
We’re all a little broken, a little scared, a little lost But lately I have been stuck in this phase And I don’t know which part scares me the most: The fact that my grades have been falling Or that I haven’t been having a good night sleep The fact that I can’t bring myself to do absolutely anything Or that my parents are beginning to worry
I’m desperate for a remedy “Why are you so sad” I tell them I don’t know. All I know is that I’ve become this other person A lifeless shell And despite my cool exterior Deep down I’m a little scared I’m scared because I don’t know who this new person is She’s always tired, but can’t fall asleep Haven’t been eating, but not hungry She lies in bed all day, switching around the same few tabs Wasting her day, day by day And at the end she’s met with an undying guilt But the whole cycle repeats itself anyway I’m desperate for a remedy I try behaviours that will numb me But I can’t go for therapy Hell forbid I go to therapy Because that would mean I’m crazy
right? No Because being mentally ill is not crazy The stigma is real, people When will we realize that mental illness is a big deal Wake up and hear the silent cries The ones we look at, but are out of sight I wish someone who could’ve told me In the very depths of my illness These feelings are valid That it is just the chemicals in my brain Serotonin and dopamine fluctuating That I’m worthy of saving
Serotonin, dopamine (x3)
Don’t be mean
Reach out to the ones who are silently crying
Because it’s getting bad
And no one notices
Purpose:
The purpose of this poem is poetry as performance because it is a slam poem, with rhyme and rhythm that was intended to appeal to the audience audiotorically.
Organization:
This slam poem is composed of 6 stanzas, with the first having a A-B-C-B rhyming scheme. I chose to make this poem rhyme, because it is vocally presented, and therefore should sound good, to engage the audience and effectively convey the message.
Style:
The line “I’m desperate for a remedy” is a line that is repeated in the first line of the first three stanzas, making it a repetition. It brings attention to the audience that the constant struggle victims of depression have to endure. The line “the ones we look at, but are out of our sight” is an oxymoron, even though the words “look” and “see” (from the word sight) technically mean the same, in this context they are supposed to be different. “See” is intended to be conscious of what you are looking at. So, a person who is looking at a depressed person might not even notice he’s depressed, but a person who is look at him will. The tone of this poem is sad, confused, trapped, and desperate. This is because the first person is can explain  yet she wants to be free of her mental illness, and is finding solutions. Theme: The theme of this poem is that mental illness is a very real disease, and it affects every walk of life. The line “wake up and hear the silent cries”, tells the audience that depression is hard to identify, victims often try to hide their depressive emotions because of the stigma that is associated with it.

J.R.R. Tolkien ALL THAT IS GOLD
All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.
Purpose:
The purpose of this poetry is storytelling. J.R.R. Tolkien is describing Aragon a character, from Lord of the Rings by comparing him with various analogies.
Organization:
This poem is organized in quatrains, it is composed of two quatrains, with an A-B-A-B rhyme scheme. The purpose of this is to separate the poem into two parts, the first stanza is a series of paradoxes; the second are ways of “rebirth”. The rhyming weaves the two stanzas into one seamless poem.
Style: Every line in the first stanza is an oxymoron, for example, “not all who wander are lost”, it is generally accepted that people who wander, have no sense of direction, and are lost, but the poet is making a different claim. This makes the readers see different perspectives of the concepts of the world. “A fire shall be woken” is a personification, it is used to explain the way fire emerges, like waking up from sleep. The entire poem is consist of A-B-A-B rhyme, like how the words “glitter” and “wither” in lines 1 and 3 rhyme. Rhyming helps create excitement when reading the poem because the reader anticipates the next rhyming word.
Theme: The theme of this poem is that change is inevitable in humans, and the people at the bottom will eventually rise to the top. The series of paradoxes tells us that for every single thing, there are exceptions. Like how not all “deep roots” reach the the bottom, and not all “old” will wither. People are the same, they won’t be the same way all the time- “the crownless again shall be king”.

A Thomas Hawkins NEVER FALL IN LOVE WITH A POET…
Never fall in love with a poet for their words are sometimes lies on occasions they're a shield on occasions a disguise They will take you on a journey upon which they bare their soul in a bid to ease your burdens in a bid to make you whole But in every word they choose for the stories that they tell lies a little piece of heaven and a little piece of hell Tormented souls we poets are sometimes quite broken and despaired in search of lost expressions missed by others who once cared Never fall in love with a poet unless you're prepared to share their pain to hold them close on the darkest nights over and again
Purpose:
The purpose of this poem is poetry as expression because the poet is expressing his thoughts about loving a poet. Organization:
The poem is composed of quatrains, where the last word in the second and fourth line rhymes. The rhyming bring particular emphasis on those words, which makes the poem more powerful. Style:
There is rhythm is the poem, the last word of the first two lines are unstressed, and the last word of the last two lines are stressed. For example, “journey” and “soul” vs “burdens” and “whole”. This makes creates a more interesting meter to the poem. The line “never fall in love with a poem” is repeated twice, the opening and closing. This is to emphasize the idea that poets are peculiar. The tone that is revealed in this poem is satirical, in a sense that it is not literally asking the readers to not love a poet; but rather showing the insight of a poet’s mind by ridiculing him.
Theme: The theme of the poem is that poets are powerful, for their ability to make their readers feel and believe whatever they want. “Lies a little piece of heaven, and a little piece of hell”- poetry can make you feel less lonely, take you on adventures; it can also make you feel pain and despair. Poets also have the ability to deceive their readers “for their words are sometimes lies, on occasions they're a shield, on occasions a disguise”.
