Reality is me accepting that the main characters of Sex in The City are just the girls in a different format. In particular:

THEMATIC HEADCANONS. @cartelheir : hc + 👪 for a family-themed headcanon

Here's a few headcanons about the Ferraro/Esparza family because I had ~more than one~:

Despite Catarina's request to Jaime to keep Avian away from Che, Jaime & Che communicated more than Jaime would like to admit. Because Jaime knew Che had an inheritance waiting for Avian for when she gets older, Jaime ended up being a puppet to Che's request - more specifically, helping to be an "on-call" doctor for Che's more unsavory business connections. While Che hated Jaime and all he stood for, Che knew Jaime was the best doctor in the states, and Che wasn't going to waste a good resource. So, as long as Jaime played fiddle to Che's business partners' request, Che will keep his distance from Avian. That was until Jaime died, of course.

While Avian did not know about Che for the majority of her childhood + adolescence, Che always knew about her (through Jaime) and often talked about Avian to his business partners. It's very likely he has introduced Avian to his partners under "Avian Ferraro" vs Jaime's surname, specifically because Che knows his name carries more worth than Jaime will ever have. Esparza was New Money, the Ferraros are Old Money.

Avian noticed a considerable shift in other's perception & respect towards her after being more connected to her uncle Che. Growing up under the "Esparza" name garnered her a lot of disrespect and people turning their nose up to her - seeing her more of a "wannabe" than truly wealthy like the rest of them (which is why her private school days were the worse time for her). When she started affiliating with her uncle more after her father's passing... when people start acknowledging she's part of the "Ferraro" family, that's when people around her start to see her as an opportunity than a burden.

Adding to that, the Ferraros are a long-standing business/crime family that has been going on for generations at this point, originally starting in Italy as early as the 1700s. Outward facing, the Ferraros' are business tycoons in the hospitality/hotel industry, which Che is the head of the family at this moment for their North America/South America expansion project. Behind the scenes, they're the biggest Europe/America Trafficking unit on what's profitable at the moment. Currently, it's drugs & weaponry.

BONUS NOTE: The Ferraro family is closely aligned to another crime family based in Spain (the Viragos). Recently, the Virago family has since distanced themselves from the crime world and have been riding off their own wealth and network connections. How they maintain their wealth, however, is marrying their children into the Ferraro family (or into their other business partners families). Che's lawyer & personal friend, Nick Virago, was supposed to marry Catarina to continue this history, but clearly, Avian's mother ran off with someone else.

NETWORK CONNECTIONS OF THE DCC. because of how lives can be intertwined by the influences of the DCC, let's talk about the unspoken relationships / haunts of this blog:

Terrah + Elvira: CLOSE FRIENDS — first met in passing during Terrah's undergrad, smoking hand-rolled spliffs off the collegiate building rooftops, Ivy being Terrah's underclassman - a transfer from the UK studying in the US for a year. Two women of esteem, connected by their intelligence and passion for the disciplines they've chose. Elvira met Terrah before Vincent, and saw the potential stifled the moment that man interjected in Terrah's path. Ivy was the only friend who stuck around before, during, and after Vincent's marriage, whereas Terrah is the only person who knew of Ivy's life prior to her Archeological acclaim. These women are thick as thieves; platonic soulmates to their core.

Manny + Ayati: COWORKERS/BUSINESS PARTNERS — whether it's for their main verse or modern verse, Manny & Ayati keep a professional, affable business relationship. She's often the auditor for his sales & assets, providing quick and curt assessments of where he stands. Manny had once tried asking her out on a date and failed miserably. But the two of them have an amazing work relationship with one another. Ayati will never bullshit him, and Aya knows she has a shoulder to lean on with Manny.

Lilah + Ricky/Jacket: ENEMIES— whether it's Ricky dating one of her close friends and/or roommates or just existing in the same room as her, Lilah & Ricky have an unspoken hatred for one another that surpasses any hope of recovery. Both of them grate on each other's nerves in the right way: Lilah is too nosy, Ricky's too closed off. Lilah's looking to make a difference in the world, but Ricky refuses to see the impact of his actions onto the world. These two can't do anything right except get on each other's nerves, and it's worsen by the fact that Lilah's biggest scoop is centered around Ricky's spree murders. Lilah is a danger to Ricky's actions, and it's only a matter of time before Ricky has to clean up the mess himself.

I often think of the active responsibility & image Terrah puts upon herself, and how that affects perception about her. After the birth of her younger sister and the passing of her mother, Terrah inherited the duty of building her sister Taliah up. Sure, her step-father had a hand in setting the expectations and pace for the two young ladies, but it was Terrah who shaped her sister to the woman she is now. Terrah, as the eldest, forgone a childhood to raise her sister - and that maternal image haunts her currently.

She's an ice queen by nature because of this. Cold, calm, collected; she works off the tactile facts and those alone, her emotions pushed to the wayside in favor to her responsibility to others. She's a servant to others' needs, to the vision/idea they want for her, and not the image she'd want for herself.

To some degree, she fell into this cycle out of convenience & laziness - to her, feeling & emotions were a deterrence. Her feelings were too selfish, self-serving. It logically did not make sense for her to act off of impulse; if she drove herself based on her instincts alone, the world around her would fall into disarray. And although she'd derive happiness away from those great expectations, that's something she could not afford.

While in her young adulthood during college she allowed herself a few brief years of rebellion from the responsibilities she placed upon herself, the cycle ultimately started again once she fell into her loveless marriage with her ex-husband. How she wishes she was unfeeling, cold, and emotionless like she portrays herself to be. Unfortunately, she's more than the thin layer of ice that protected her sentimental feelings.
