Hai-Taihe, a minor spirit known in the rural north of the Nekhuatseth forest, seen in the spaces between major towns and cities.
She is described as a mangy, heavily scarred bitch bearing signs of past pregnancies. She's mostly a normal looking dog but closer inspection reveals paws with unusually long fingers and distinct thumbs, and the tail and eyes of an elowey. She appears to lone travelers in the wilderness, almost exclusively on moonless nights. She will sit down at the fireside and strike up conversations in fluent (though antiquated and overly formal) Nekh, and it's usually only after she disappears that one notices that it's "kinda weird" that a dog was talking to them.
She is variously interpreted as a protective local spirit who guards travelers, and as a minor god of death that guides the living through moonless nights where the boundaries between the living and the Otherworld of the dead are thinnest. Sightings where she does not speak are regarded as omens of impending doom.
This folklore is contemporary, with the Hai-Taihe figure only showing up in stories from the past couple centuries and having no obvious presence in older mythology. Some scholars connect her to relics from the Sethym culture, extinct for almost a millenia. They left few direct records and their histories are distorted by generations of oral retelling, but motifs of a dogheaded elowey figure are common in the area, often in conjunction with sword imagery. The figure is often found on intricate metal amulets left as grave goods for high ranking clanmothers, and in stone or clay figures left in the boundaries of settlement territories (the latter commonly depicted as heavily pregnant)
Tumblr media
[The meta reality not known in-universe: Hai-Taihe is an actual physical entity, a living god once known as [NAME FORGOTTEN] who was worshiped as a tutelary deity to the ancient Sethym. She was conceptualized as a mother to the people and the tutor of the sword, companion to the hunting god [NAME FORGOTTEN], who taught the people the spear.
The demon [NAME FORGOTTEN], a god of cannibalism and the dishonorable hunt, is said to have devoured the tutor of the spear. The tutor of the sword was chewed on and spat out half-dead while trying to rescue her, and her consumed companion was twisted in the demon's stomach and excreted as something new and terrible.
The tutor of the sword lost her identity with the cultural extinction of her worshipers and has found new life as Hai-Taihe, unable to distinguish the boundaries between her own mythology and living memory, both of which are half-remembered at best. She feels a great affection towards mortals and wanders in an endless, futile search for her companion, the devoured god now known as the spirit Arweny. She wishes to kill her, as an act of mercy.]

Do you have any cool bird facts
female raptors (eagles, hawks, falcons, etc) are larger than male raptors in pretty much all species. this happens even in groups not closely related to each other (ex: hawks and falcons), so its beneficial enough in their niche that its evolved independently a few times, though its unsure exactly what that benefit is atm (bc unlike males being larger in a lot of mammals, female raptors dont make a habit of fighting each other or using size to attract mates as far as we know). ex: heres a male and female Cooper's Hawk
Tumblr media
somewhat mentioned above but falcons are more closely related to parrots than they are to hawks
Gray Catbirds and American Robins have been witnessed raising young in the same nest at the same time. In one instance (reported by Mulvihill and Murray), they were recorded caring for the young of both species in the nest, and when the Catbird young fledged, the adult Catbirds continued to provide food for the not-yet-fledged Robins. heres a pic of the nest from the report
Tumblr media
the worlds oldest known bird as of 2024 is a wild Laysan Albatross named Wisdom who's 72-73 years old (at minimum, we dont actually know her birth date, just that she was at least 5 years old when she was banded in the 50s) and still raising chicks. here's her with one of her chicks
Tumblr media
also Albatrosses have wingspans of up to 3.5m/11.5ft and have been recorded flying 49,700 miles without touching land (they do land in the water to eat tho)
this is from personal experience but if you walk around in a north american grassland for long enough, you Will get jumpscared by a Mourning Dove bc they make their nests on the ground in the grass and like to hang out on the ground in the grass and they also like to wait until youre right overtop of them to freak out and fly away from you
Bald Eagles don't get their fully white heads and tails until theyre about 5 years old
Tumblr media
A lot of birds have been observed incorporating cigarette butts into their nests, and a study in Mexico on House Finches found that this actually results in drastic decreases in parasites affecting young compared to nests without them
Cedar Waxwings (and Waxwings in general) just look so smooth. they look like someone airbrushed them. look at this shit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in Jacanas, females lay eggs in multiple males' nests, and then the males raise the young by themself. Also they carry their babies under their wings like this
Tumblr media
Horned Guan. Theyre endangered and live in a small area of central america. both the males and females have the little horn fez, the males just have taller ones

Im very curious about the haidamane family. I remember on your patreon you mention couya being very homophobic, but her brother is in a relationship with a man and is supported by the family. How is their sibling dynamic?
Yeah, Couya is homophobic in a mostly setting-typical way, with some additional layers added from how much she hates her brother and dislikes men in general.
As is typical, she sees her brother’s probable dalliances as both mundanely shameful and spiritually weakening her family against curses (via bodily 'violation'), and resents it tremendously. HOWEVER she defends him for much the same reasons she dislikes it so much- denying it and protecting him protects their family from the associated stigma, and wards against curses and other metaphysical harm. All three siblings are politically prominent in the military and it is very important to her that their status and family name is protected.
Couya isn’t his main protector though, it’s his sister Faiza who really looks out for him. Faiza also has mostly setting-typical feelings about male homosexuality, but she loves Janeys dearly and is personally invested in his safety and honor beyond just protecting the family name. The two of them have spent their entire lives looking out for each other, and Faiza has sort of a complex about being her siblings' protector. And given she is one of the highest status women in the entirety of Wardin (being a likely candidate for the Odomache) her support is the key thing keeping him afloat.
She’s the only person who actually knows concrete details about his and Brakul’s relationship, which has allowed her to make (very carefully worded) oaths about Janeys’ status without lying. Lying under oath is viewed as exceptionally dangerous in a metaphysical sense (you are lying to God and will be cursed or damned to a dismal afterlife as a wandering ghost), and oaths (ESPECIALLY from a person of her status) are taken very seriously, so her word means a lot. It's just not enough to stop the gossip.
Anyway, their sibling dynamic is basically this:
Three children are born into a politically prominent family by two different mothers, in an environment of constant competition for the merest crumb of parental love. All become highly ambitious and driven to perform well socially, academically, and militarily. Faiza is the oldest and obvious favorite, recieving highly preferential treatment. Janeys is a middle child and disliked by his parents but given privileged treatment as the only male heir. Couya is the youngest, partly illegitimate (born of a different mother than the other two, retains the family name but locked out of key inheritance), is isolated and neglected, and is also just considered to be strange and offputting as a person (she's most likely autistic, and not exactly existing in a supportive social context).
Janeys survives childhood by latching onto Faiza and developing a heavily dependent relationship on her, Couya is isolated and in constant competition with Janeys, not only for the position of ‘second favorite child’ but also for Faiza’s attention. She desperately wants Faiza's affection but is also profoundly resentful of her golden-child status. Faiza comes out of this mess the best-adjusted (relatively speaking) and a supportive figure to both her other siblings, but with a sort of martyr/hero complex about it.
Faiza and Couya- amicable and practically supportive but emotionally distant, with considerable resentment on Couya’s side.
Faiza and Janeys- very close, supportive and enabling. Janeys is heavily emotionally dependent on Faiza, and Faiza (on a mostly subconscious level) power trips on it.
Couya and Janeys- mutual hatred, avoid each other whenever possible, constantly engaging in psychological warfare when forced to interact, only support each other as far as it supports the family itself.
also here, have several paragraphs of clarification on Male Homosexuality In Wardi Culture under the cut. Enjoy:
So yeah, in Wardi culture sexual relationships between men are stigmatized to a degree that is largely situational. It’s less the same-gender aspect itself and more a combination of how masculinity and power is conceptualized, especially irt the body. Men can penetrate in sex regardless of the partner’s gender without it being stigmatized (though there are additional cultural standards about sexual moderation and appropriate expressions of sexuality). It’s widely accepted for men to have sex with male sex workers (or eunuchs, though they are not fully conceptualized as men by this society) so long as they are the active participants. Receiving penetration is the source of stigma, deemed highly emasculating and a fundamental violation of the body.
There are strong beliefs about spiritual implications surrounding the interactions between bodies. Even having a nude body gazed at is disempowering on a metaphysical level, receiving penetration much more so. It is imagined as literally weakening the recipient, leaving them more vulnerable to curses or influence of evil spirits/wandering ghosts. This is also why the highest status roles for women tend to involve celibacy- king-sisters outrank queens, being aunts or sisters and having no children of their own, while the Odomache (the most esteemed role in Wardi society by far, deemed a physical manifestation of God) must remain entirely celibate and cannot even be SEEN naked.
Receiving penetration (and the resulting metaphysical violation) is accepted as the way of things for the average woman (and of eunuchs), and this is assumed as a justification for their reduced status in this largely patriarchal society. Receiving penetration as a man is more of an active choice to be 'violated', and thus wildly questionable.
Though the stigma revolves around penetration, it extends to male romantic relationships themselves (even if they involve no penetrative sex). It’s not frowned upon as something like a ‘sin’ to be punished, rather a profound embarrassment, a failure to successfully perform masculinity, indicative of impotence. It should be noted that the cultural conceptualization of sex itself here revolves around penetration, and other sexual activities are not fully considered ‘having sex’ with the same implications. This also means that there is comparatively little stigma for same gender relationships between women, or eunuchs- at worst, these relationships are more a source of gossip and teasing, imagined as the result of an excessive sexual appetite or unsatisfying male partners.
So bottom line for Janeys and Brakul: their relationship is considered inappropriate because they are men of equal status, it is obviously romantic in nature, and it is assumed they’re full on fucking (they actually aren’t. Which is a whole other thing). It’s particularly scandalous for a politically powerful figure to be in this position. Janeys receives the worst of it, given that he is smaller, younger, and somewhat more ‘effeminate’ it’s assumed by most that he’s bottoming (Couya totally thinks so).

[ID: Photos of a painted clay sculpture of two Przewalski's horses leaning against one another in an embrace with their eyes closed. The sculpture is from the shoulders up. Each photo shows a different angle. End ID]
This was an older Embrace piece that wasn't up to scratch, was going to recycle it, instead reworked the faces and manes, and used it as an opportunity to practice painting with acrylics. One of the faces has the more “plastic” look that I've been trying to avoid with acrylics (lower left photo). Watering the paint down and then gradually layering seems to keep the matte look I was getting with gouache.

Some khait practice
Domestic khait form two main populations- western khait (domesticated by caelin people in prehistory on the western steppes for meat and as pack animals) and eastern khait (domesticated khait that gradually spread as pack animals and were then bred for human riding use in much more recent history, ~1500 years BP)
These are all eastern khait, which are mostly larger, physically stronger, and lack significant gene flow from wild khait populations. Eastern khait have been selected into a greater diversity of color/horn morphs and breeds, with few even remotely resembling their wild phenotype.
'Eastern' only refers to their relative directional origin, as these khait have spread to peoples across the entirety of the supercontinent, while purebred western khait are largely limited to their native steppe range. However, eastern khait require greater upkeep and have entirely lost their migratory instincts, and often fail to form breeding populations without the support of sophont caretakers. Feral populations are rare outside of the most stable and ideal conditions, and are outcompeted in their ancestral grasslands by their hardier progenitors.
