Went to a bar with some friends once, my closest friend there was a cis woman who I'd hung out with a fair bit. Tried to hold it but eventually I awkwardly asked. And I was awkward because it was embarrassing and scary just to ask someone to go to the bathroom with me. Felt wrong to admit I wanted to use the women's, but I refused to use men's at this point after too many uncomfortable/scary experiences. She pointed to where the bathroom was and described how to get to it. And I was like, can you please go with me? So she gets up, takes me there, opens the door for me, then closes it and goes back to the table. I think that was such a foundational moment for me. I was uncomfortable asking someone to go with me, it felt like taking up too much space, but I did it and it still wasn't clear enough. Wish it wasn't scary to say, "I am terrified of being in a public bathroom, please stay with me", to a cis person, but it is.

In my glittering palace of privilege I didn’t even think of how anxiety-inducing it must be for my not-always-passing friend when we’re out in public for hours and they need to go pee. It wasn’t until my friend told me this that I realized there was a stop-gap solution until the world got kinder. I could go with her, even if I didn’t actually have to “go.” And she’d have backup. Like from the moment I saw them doing the "We'll be a safe place for porn we won't ban your shit" I expected that itch was going to cave eventually. There have been sites out there that have not caved but it's not solely due to stricter principles, but being in a better position to resist complying with mastercard/visa policies for various reasons, and itch simply did not seem to me like it was in such a position to follow through on that when the time came for them to get hit.
