Then the good news came: these bikes would actually go into production. But would the factory machines be as cool as the concepts? The answer came last year at EICMA, when Husqvarna revealed the production ready 401s (and 701). It made us very, very happy: never before have we seen production motorcycles stay so true to the original designs. The London-based shop has a distinctive signature style, with coachbuilt bodywork draped over minimal mechanicals. Until now, Auto Fabrica have only worked on classic machines. But they’ve attracted the attention of the manufacturers, and Yamaha has now commissioned a pair of Yard Built customs based on the XSR900—and for good measure, a third prototype built around a 1976 XS750 [below]. The Type 11 project kicked off when Yamaha Europe executive Shun Miyazawa sent over a pre-production prototype of the XSR900, just before it was revealed at the 2015 EICMA show. And the reason their gear is so good is that they spend enough time in the saddle to know what works. They also have an ideal testing ground: the Pacific Northwest. The company is based in Hood River, Oregon—surrounded by hills and forests connected by rugged fire roads. So when Yamaha USA approached them to collaborate on a XSR700 build, it was never going to be anything other than a backcountry explorer. One of the USA’s premium custom bike events, it’s packed each year with lustworthy handcrafted machines, curated by hosts Revival Cycles. But even though this six-cylinder, hub-steered oddity is Revival’s handiwork—and will fit right in—it won’t be at the show this year. That’s because it’s just kicked off a one-year residency at the newly opened Haas Moto Museum at Dallas. Museum owner and collector Bobby Haas has been on a mission lately. The museum is home to almost 110 vintage and custom motorcycles—some of them commissioned specifically for the collection. Rodsmith’s BSA Bantam was one such bike; this masterpiece is another.
