I really love how Merlin and Uther are the exact opposites of one another and still share the same goals.

They both want peace for Camelot. They want what's best for Arthur. They think the dragon is a nuisance. They want to help Morgana but end up becoming her enemy through their own actions.

They have the same enemies, they both find sorcerers to be the most dangerous.

Hc, but neither of them trusts Agravaine (he wasn't in Uther's court).

They both lie to Arthur about the circumstances of his birth and their true feelings about magic. They have both abused magic to save Arthur and insist on keeping that a Secret.

They also know some of the other's secrets, like Uther sees much more of what Merlin sacrifices for Arthur than Arthur does and Merlin sees what Uther sacrifices for his son. To an extend, of course. But Merlin knows of the circumstances of Arthur's birth, which Uther knows he knows and thanks him for keeping it for him. Also the first time with Excalibur and Uther understands the bond between Merlin and Arthur.

Uther and Merlin are, in every sense, accidental allies. And I think we deserved more of that.

Merlin's opposite is not Morgana. It's Uther. His dynamic with Uther, however, is opposite to that between him and Morgana.
