GoHawaii.com immediately caught my eye as I was browsing different websites for different destinations. Not only does it use an abundance of interesting typography (look at the brush lettering of that Aloha!!!), but the overall design of the website is extremely visually pleasing and easy to use. The website takes advantage of the beautiful scenery of Hawaii, using many images that will be sure to draw the viewer in and make them want to go to Hawaii (I want to go surfing as I type this) ((I hate the cold weather of Philadlephia)) (((even though I’m from New Jersey but whatever)))
The website also emphasizes the color blue. Blue has been said to be the most appealing color to use in marketing as it gives a sense of serenity and GoHawaii’s use of blue definitely gives off that vibe perfectly. Additionally, the graphics of the Hawaiian map are just beautiful. Can you tell I really want warm weather and to go to Hawaii?

Designer Spotlight

I chose to spotlight the designers Alan Fletcher and Eddie Lobanovskiy. Although I was drawn to both designer’s works, their styles are very different. Alan Fletcher’s style has a very clever use of bright colors, especially primary. I like his work because it is simple, consisting of mark-making rather than straight and linear shapes all of the time. Much of his work includes primary colors and the basic shapes: circles, squares, triangles. And yet his simplicity still gives something fresh, something that you want to look at again.
Eddie Lobanovskiy’s style, on the other hand, is very modern. Smooth shapes, gradients for depth, modern type faces and secondary/tertiary etc. palettes. Rather than hand drawn designs, Lobanovskiy takes sketches and renders them on online softwares to create beautiful pieces. My favorite of his works shown here has got to be the purple and yellow landscape. I love the complementary palette, as well as the use of atmospheric perspective, figure ground, and transparency. It’s basically everything that we learned in design II and for some reason that satisfies me hehe.

barnes foundation web presence
The Barnes Foundation is an art institution and educational facility. It is home to many works of art which are housed in a modern, state-of-the-art building in Philadelphia. Although I was not able to visit the Barnes, I looked through their social media pages and website. The Barnes main color scheme is black, white, and orange. This is a very simple and minimalistic palette that is used throughout their pages and logos. Their Instagram and Twitter profiles carry the same simplicity. Their feed on Instagram is very simple and not messy. The posts consists mostly of single photos rather than collages, focusing on pieces of art and featured guests and visitors.

book design/library visit

What really caught by eye about this book was the the use of bright colors on the cover. The contrast of the pink background and green leaves really stands out. As well as, the gold metallic lettering of the title.

Within the book, there are many beach themed designs and colors used that are reminiscent of summertime and warm weather.

The design of the left page directly corresponds with the pink of the swim trunks in the photograph on the right.

Many of the pages throughout the book resembles beach towel designs.

fashion design
I couldn’t choose between my favorite designers. I’m very attracted to flowing, intricate, and delicate gowns with lots of movement. Many of the gowns shown here are made with delicate fabrics. The designers I chose are Elie Saab, Marchesa, Monique Lhuillier, Maison Valentino, and Zuhair Murad. Many of these pieces have similar elements of design.
A lot of the fabrics chosen for these pieces are transparent with elements of texture to enhance the design. For example, the first dress (Marchesa) utilizes a simple background and enhances the dress with delicate floral pieces that give the effect of real vinery. That combined with the choice of tulle and lace fabric give the dress a fairtytale and dream-like vibe. The black dress and blue dress with waves (Maison Valentino) utilize gradients. The black dress gets less busy with stars as the dress moves up the body and as the black gradates to transparent grey.

design and explore - east passyunk
This past Sunday, Addison, Madeline, and I got to explore East Passyunk. Fortunately, it was a beautiful, sunny day, making it even more enjoyable to walk the streets of the small neighborhood. Originally, we were going to eat brunch at a small bakery. However, when we got to the bakery, there was a sign on the door that said “sold out.” Which we, uhhhhh, were confused by LOL. So we walked around a bit more and found an old looking pub that seemed like a good spot to eat at. It was called the Pub of Passyunk East or “POPE” for short.
At the restaurant, me and Addison ordered breakfast burgers and Madeline ordered coconut french toast where she had her first experience tasting maple syrup! After we ate, we explore some stores. One store we went to was dedicated solely to Philly merchandise based off of pop culture. There were t-shirts that appropriated the Wawa logo but saying “jawn.” We were thinking of buying some stuff, but the t-shirt itself was around $30 and we’re broke college kids so we said nevermind.
We also explored a beautiful garden shop called Urban Jungle. Again, we wanted to possibly buy something but then we saw that one flower pot cost $500 so we were like bye. There was a cute little greenhouse at the top of the building and we got to see cute succulents and cacti.
Finally, we got rolled ice cream and were very indecisive with what flavors we wanted so we got two cups of mint and cinnamon. The lady behind the counter was definitely annoyed with how much time we took to make a choice for what we wanted! Overall, we got some good eats and some fresh air and it was fun hanging out with my classmates and exploring parts of Philadelphia I’ve never been to before!

Time Management
This winter term, my schedule has been busier than usual. Sometimes it’s hard to keep up. I have dance rehearsals, classes until 9:30 on Wednesdays, design homework, plus keeping up with extra curricular activities. Some ways I stay sane and stress free (barely) are to do homework in between classes. I don’t usually like to stay up too late doing work since I have 9 AM classes everyday so I have to wake up early. So whenever I have breaks between classes, I always try to get as much homework done as possible in that time so that I don’t have to stay up until the ass of dawn trying to match a piece of Color Aid. Despite my busy schedule, because I manage my time well I still have time to be social during the weekends.
