Degree Show! Day 13
Friday 25th May 2018
Printed A2 with Colin
Cut images out and double sided taped them onto foam board
Painted edges on A1 photos
Put bodice back onto mannequin
Chloe and Steph put up my name and statement
Also helped Chris and Zoe line and put up my A2 images on the wall. Due to the walls being dusty, the images wouldn’t stick and were falling down so Chris wiped down the walls with a wet wipe.
Kevin screwed business card box onto wall under my statement
Moved scrap MDF into sink space
Gave Paul spare printed photographs for Summative assessment
1 photo had dropped just before the Degree Show so I will have to pin them over the closed week
Had great feedback on the show and over half of my business cards had been taken by the public

Degree Show Day 12
Thursday 24th May 2018
Spoke to Colin about printing at 11:30am
Spoke to Paul and John about deadline
Did mock set-up with 10 images on the wall. Paul didn’t like the dress on top of the box and wanted fewer images but A2 not A3
Spoke to Colin about printing Friday morning
Stuck A1 images on boxes
Painted edges of box/images with white wall paint
Spoke to Susana about her makeup for the Degree Show and decided she would do it herself. Also did skin tests on her
Spoke to Chloe and Steph about my space and they both agreed on keeping the dress on the boxes and we decided on 5 images for the wall space. Steph ruffled the tutu giving it a more interesting shape
Helped Kristian move his sculptures so the caretaker can plug in the lights above his space in the morning
Painted bottom of some of the walls as they weren’t done properly
Swept space
Got foam board off Pauline (Graphic Design)
Friday’s to-do list:

Degree Show Day 11
Wednesday 23rd May 2018
Spoke to Colin about printing more
Double sided tape and PVA tests on scrap MDF. Tape gave a smoother finish and didn’t require drying time.
Dusted boxes
Put double sided tape on each edge and side of the boxes to stick on each picture
Found it was easier to line up the image from the top of the boxes for the A3 and A2 boxes and in case I needed to reline the images, I only peeled the bottom strip of tape until I was happy with the placement of the photograph.
The A3 images fit almost perfectly but the A2 images were slightly off by a few mm.
Filled in each gap between the photos and the box with black gloss paint and then along the edge of the paper on each photo to blend it in seamlessly to the boxes.
Realised due to the beams being in the centre of the walls I would need to hang 8 images up rather than 6
When looking at images, I thought it would be nice to have film stills included in my wall display. I will print 10 images, that way I will have more photos to play around with on the walls.
Thursdays to-do list:
A1 images on boxes
Paint A1 image edges
Bring in mannequin cover
Print with Colin
Speak to Paul about hand in and Contemporary Bibliography
Journal
Creative Futures
Scrap gloss paper for bottom of A1 box

Degree Show Day 10
Tuesday 22nd May 2018
Have to take mannequin cover home to wash as it was chucked under a table by someone while the room was being painted meaning there was white paint all over it.
Cut out the 12 images I printed with Colin using a large cutting board, large ruler and scalpel.
Used tins to hold the ruler in place as had to get the ruler bang on the correct mm for each picture. Each picture was cut almost perfectly.

Degree Show Day 9
Monday 21st May 2018
Printed 12 images with Colin
Had some trouble figuring out how to size the image to the paper I had so wasted quite a lot of paper doing this, also with the printer slowing down and stopping due to being on all day. Printing took about 6 hours in total.

Degree Show Day 6
Wednesday 16th May 2018
Spent the most of the day sanding my Polystyrene mannequin to my size, every so often brushing it off and holding my bodice to it to see how much was needed to be taken off. I began my using a scalpel to carve into it but this took far too long and was taking out chunks rather than it being an even surface.
Tumblr media
Late afternoon I sanded the majority of room 6. Thought the room would have started to be prepped today like arranged but due to 1st and 2nd years either not turning up or going home for lunch, there was no one to do it. I decided to do it myself so that painting wasn’t delayed during the week.

Degree Show Day 3
Friday 11th May 2018
Caron rang to say paper had been delivered late Thursday so no need to ask about next day delivery refund
When I went to collect the paper, we opened and checked it as there were a few rips and dents in the packaging. She also wanted me to keep it somewhere safe so it didn’t get stolen, so I suggested Colin’s office like he has offered a few days ago.
Spoke to Paul about Focus Wales being on in Undegun so not being able to do any new film or photography there. This meant I would have to print some images late with Colin at his busiest time so have to okay this with him.
Spoke to Colin about storing my paper with him and printing some images later than I expected. All of this was okay to do.
Primed backs, tops and bottoms of boxes.
Put tutu on mannequin to see if it needs shortening. Right now it is a good length but may change my mind later on in the prep.
Went shopping and bought 2 packs of cotton gloves, a large dust sheet, paint brushes and one coat black gloss.
Spoke to Paul about gloss paint and formative. Asked me to open windows when using the gloss to ventilate the room.
Cut dust sheet in half and tapped every edge that shouldn’t be painted. Masking taped dust sheet to boxes.
Myself and Sophie from 1st year painted the top of each box
Weekend to-do list:
Write statement
Research different business card websites
Pick photography to go on boxes

Degree Show Day 2
Thursday 10th May 2018
Spoke to Steve about him possibly having my boxes after the Degree Show as they’re too big for me to take back to South Wales after the show
Bought 4 sheets of sugar paper, A1, from the Art Shop. Photo paper still not been delivered
Tipped boxes onto sides ready to prime
Added 1st layer of primer on. 1 part PVA, 5 part water. Did 3 sides of each box
Primed one piece of MDF and painted the other piece. (Scrap pieces)
Spoke to Steve about walls in my space
Discussed if I needed anything removed/added and securing the walls. Talked about removing the beam in my space at 1pm and possibly drill the holes in my boxes afterwards
Showed Steve the mannequin pole
Measured the diameter of the hole which needed to be 5.6cm
We stacked the boxes and held the mannequin up to find that we could have a big hole approximately 6cm in the A2 box and a small hole in the A3 box
When sliding the A3 box onto the pole, the thicker wooden part of the pole was making the box balance, rather than allowing it to sit on the A2 box. So Steve suggested cutting down the wooden pole so the boxes would sit firmly
Once Steve had cut the pole, we were able to slot all of the boxes onto the mannequin pole
Spoke to Paul and Chloe about room being painted  Tuesday 15th May onward as both myself and Susana have work/painting to do before studios are painted white
Filled the rest of the pin holes on stacked boxes
Primed all sides. 3 sides of each box having 2 layers and 1 side of each box having 1 layer of diluted PVA
Friday to-do list:
Speak to Caron about paper delivery and next-day delivery refund
Prime back and edges of boxes
See if tutu is long enough on mannequin
Buy cotton gloves and test paint from Wilkos

Degree Show Day 1
Wednesday 9th May 2018
Spoke to Colin about paper and printing
A1 print is 89p
Looked at boxes and realised the top of each box was square and so I will paint the top of each box black. Experiment with matt and shiny paint.
Spoke to Caron in the shop about paper. She rang a company to see if they supplied what I want.
She had to have the order approved by the uni before confirming it with me
Paul Talk
Test paste, double-sided tape and pva on scrap mdf
Bring mannequin in Thurs 10th to measure pole circumference for hole through the boxes.
Video-do same dance at different angles
Cotton gloves to handle photography
Test paint on scrap mdf
Spoke to Dan Berry
1-Fill small holes with wood filler
2-Prime mdf with decorators PVA
3-Let dry, then add 2nd coat
4-Try decorators pva for sticking photos
5-Trim down with a scalpel blade
(Print bigger than A3 and A2!)
Caron confirmed my order.
240 gsm, 40 sheets, high gloss, A1. £132.19, next day delivery paid for
Works out at £3.30 per sheet
I need 4 A1, 4 A2 and 4 A3 images for boxes
12 images x 89p print=£10.68
£10.68 print x £132.19 paper=£142.87
I saved £32.13 by printing at uni instead of instantprint
Taylor and Chris carried A1 box from room 45 to room 6
I carried A2 and A3 boxes from room 45 to room 6
Discussed holes being drilled into boxes for mannequin pole with Paul and Steph
Spoke to Chloe about being able to prime boxes without wall paint getting on them. But she doesn’t know when more paint is being delivered so will have to risk priming my boxes in my space.
Bought decorators PVA, paint trays, foam rollers, roller handle and wood filler at Wickes.
Thursday to-do list:
Get paper off Caron
Buy newsprint to cover box bases to prime
Prime first side of boxes
Speak to Paul/Steve about the holes and show them the mannequin
Test wall paint and PVA on scrap MDF pieces

Failed video idea
Thursday 3rd May 2018
When thinking of other video ideas, I thought a video version of my wounded Dancers feet would be really effective with an old music box chime. A friend from home does Ballet and so I contacted her about arranging to meet up and video together whilst I was visiting home. We originally planned for it to be done on the Thursday 3rd May but due to my own complications I had to rearrange for Monday 7th May. On Saturday 5th May I contacted her to arrange a time for Monday but unfortunately she didn’t get back to me so I wasn’t able to do the video.
In my work, I have always used myself, using only 3 other people in my entire art practice. This is due to me being the most reliable person as I don’t have to wait for people to arrange dates and times with me, doing makeup is easier if I do it on myself as I can avoid having to do skin tests with materials I frequently use and I am the only person that can picture my visions and outcomes.

Undegun Ballet Photography
Thursday 26th April 2018
Looking into the deeper pain a Ballet dancer experiences, I booked to go to the Undegun hotel rooms as the rooms had a Francesca Woodman feel to them. Morgan help me do up the ribbon corset on the back of the bodice and then we looked in each room to see what I could work with and what rooms weren’t worth using. I started off using the darkest room on the floor, forcing myself to cry whilst curling myself up into different positions, keeping my toes pointed at all times. I used flash and a big torch as my lighting as the room was just too dark to see in otherwise, also keeping the door open for extra light to prevent too much noise being created on the photos. Myself and Morgan found an old looking chair in one of the rooms which I thought would be perfect for some of the images as it fit in really well with the room I was using. For some of the chair poses, I placed my camera at an angle and positioned the torch so that it would create a shadow on the wall, making my shadow and the chairs shadow sit largely in the round torch light.
Next, I went into one of the natural lit, wallpaper rooms and sat on the floor in front of the camera. By this point I was very drained from taking the photographs and making myself cry for them so the photos in this room turned out to be very emotional, powerful and disturbing all in one. One photograph I had a smudged face which once I had looked back on all of the images which I had done in all of them with slow shutter as I had done in previous photographs.
Lastly, myself and Morgan went into The Void to do two short video behind a white screen they had up for performances. Going behind the screen and up close gave a really creepy look as the further away from the screen, the more ghostly you look which I thought tied in well with my previous images.

Feathered straps
Wednesday 25th April 2018
At Girls Who Make I finished the straps, sewing 2 feathers onto each strap at the front. I decided to leave the back of the straps as bare elastic due to them stretching when I move meaning the feathers would pop out of the thread and fall out anyway.

Boxes made
Monday 23rd April 2018
Dave finished the boxes and started moving them over into my space. When speaking to Paul about my Degree Show space, we discussed me being in room 47 so Dave brought the boxes up to my studio space in room 45.
