“Well, it may not be part of your title but I’d have to be an idiot to not see that with my own eyes. If you need a reminder, you know who to go to, although I’m pretty sure the rest of the ladies here think so too.“ Ivy flirted with her fake mom, knowing she couldn’t do that in public. In fact, every member of her new ‘family’ was smoking hot. Too bad for her. But a little flirting while they were inside couldn’t hurt, right? “Oh, I’m a waitress at the diner down the street, just the kinda same job I had. I’ll probably die with the same job, but at least they pay and I have a bed and a fridge to check whenever I want, which is a fucking dream.”
Tumblr media
The words from the younger woman brought the lightest of blushes to settle over the cheeks of Caitlin. The color on her cheeks only served to further highlight the bags under her eyes - normally hidden by make up but not at this early hour - as she sipped from a glass of water. She knew the girl was flirting, but she didn’t have it in her heart to flirt back, not yet. “Oh. I passed by there today. I might have to drop in while you’re working and check it out some time. Y’know, do the ‘motherly’ thing and make sure it’s a good work environment for you.” The happy tone conveyed with having a bed and a fridge to check whenever she wanted caused one thin eyebrow to quirk. “Did you not have that before...?”

Jude grimaced, trailing her hands over the soft, real grass. “Gross, that’s some… Brave New World crap. Like you’d lose the softness, the smell when it’s freshly cut, the smell after it rains, wet soil, hell… Even bugs. Bugs are pretty bomb. I doubt they like that Astro lawn things.” The conversation was quiet, but Jude was starting to feel like maybe it was less awkward, comfortable even. She hoped it wasn’t just her imagination.
The older blonde was so serious. And Jude could swear she had the saddest eyes she had ever seen. Probably everyone in that damn house had but Jude knew she was a dumbass and her brain was already on track to make Caitlin laugh or maybe just smile. “Yeah, and then us chicks ban together to march with our pink pussy hats and men everywhere crap their pants, amirite?” The pink haired girl nodded, looking around absent-mindedly. “For sure. I don’t think I had ever been in any suburbs before now.” Just the forgotten alleys of Silicon Valley, with its ghost and bankrupt dreamers. Jude was usually a rambler. Speak before thinking kind, so it was so hard to carry on a conversation without revealing anything about herself or casually asking the older woman things that would be considered normal like ‘Where you from?’, ‘You hate the suburbs?’, ‘Why the sad eyes?’
Jude scrunched her nose. “I know, I know… But right now blackening my lungs feels kinda worth it. Plus, there’s a lot of this grass and I love it and all but I’d prefer to have some other kind of grass.” She added with a small wink. “That you would be…?” Jude wanted her to continue. “A hot-shot? Well, recognized or not, assuming you were super famous…” Abort, Jude. Abort. “Anyone with eyes can see that you’re in fact, a hot-shot, madame professor.”
Caitlin couldn’t help the small chuckle that rumbled up from deep in her throat at the disgusted reaction to the thought of Astro-turf from the younger woman. Though she herself had no real preference for real over fake grass, even after growing up in a rural town, she did understand that most people preferred things that were real. Though... what was real and what was fake, anyway? Wasn’t it all subjective? Ah, hell.
“Pink pussy hats?” The older woman shook her head. She’d seen the movement, of course. Her wife had been a part of it but... Caitlin - back when she was Catarina - had put one on just a singular time in order to satiate Trix’s desire to see the woman wearing one. “You haven’t?” Cait wasn’t sure why that surprised her about the pink haired girl, but it did. And every time she looked at the other people in her ‘family’ - especially Jude and Ivy - she wondered what walks of life had brought them to this point. Were they criminals like those Cait had worked for, or criminal-ish like Cait herself? All questions she wasn’t allowed to ask, but a part of her yearned to know.
“It does feel good in the moment...” The red head mused, half-contemplating smoking her first cigarette in nearly a decade. She decided against it, though, knowing if she did her dreams that night were sure to be flooded with images of Trix that would rack her with guilt. The mention of other ‘grass’ does bring about another chuckle, but the older woman doesn’t comment to it - not for now. “Not famous by sight.” Was Cait’s reply before she moved to stand, intent on heading toward the pool to dip her toes in the water, when Jude’s words caught her ears. She quirked her eyebrow at the other woman. “I’m old enough to be your mother.” Okay, that sounded... weird. No weirder than... “And I’m your aunt, remember? Be careful who you make comments like that around. Last thing we need is to be getting in trouble when we’ve only just started to get settled.”

Yeah, I think that will pass soon for all of us. We have to get used to this, am I right? [Ivy chuckled before finishing her bowl, setting it by her side once again.] Eh, it’s alright. There’s a bed and that’s all I ask for, honestly. [She stopped herself from keep talking about the night she slept in her car as soon as she remembered they couldn’t talk about their past. It would have been weird telling all of that to someone she barely knew and trusted anyways.] So, what are you now…? Aren’t you a hot professor or something like that? [Ivy changed the subject quickly, trying to make small talk with her new mom.]
Tumblr media
I suppose we do, yeah. For the foreseeable future at least. [Or until I can find a way to properly execute my revenge, Caitlin thought. She wouldn’t dwell on that now though. She eyed Ivy as the younger woman set the bowl aside and made quick work of jumping from the subject of her room to Caitlin’s job and though she quirked an eyebrow in curiosity, the older woman allowed the subject change. Her eyebrow raised further, though, at the comment of being a ‘hot professor’.] Hot? I’m not entirely sure if that’s part of my title but I am a Professor now, yeah. [And how different it would be to work with the living day in and day out instead of being able to divide her day between dealing with co-workers and examining bodies.] What job did they give you?

Jude smirked, narrowing her eyes. “Astroturf? What is that? If it’s fake grass then that’s a hell of a name… Sounds more like, some sort of outer space sport. I’d play it.” Jude rambled casually, still laying on her spot on the lawn, blowing the blades of grass off of her glasses. It was so weird. Who had come up with the idea that people just just band together from one second to the other as a unit, as families. God, they were barely even introduced. And suddenly Jude had a “dad” and was living with the most gorgeous family ever created. How were the neighbors even buying any of this? She had it easy though. The two “moms” had to play their part to a “T” and that meant like… sleeping in a bed together. Yikes. It was all very… Yikes. At least she had her own room and nobody to disturb because she knew she tended to sleep talk in Russian. This is was all a mess.
The pink haired girl shrugged again. “Not really, actually… I’m starting “work” in  a couple of days and they gave me some courses to catch up but it’s all like… kiddie computer games. This fellas aren’t taking me seriously, ya feel? But they’ll see.” She cleared her throat, sitting up and wincing at the fresh stitches. “The suburbs are weird as fuck but I had never… Y’know, been anywhere this nice. And like… been free.” Welp, Jude’s voice almost broke at that last word, thinking of her months in the concrete room, with the chain around her ankle and the mattress on the floor with the horrible stains. She shuddered, taking a long drag of her cigarette and offering the carton to the older blonde. “You smoke?” Another drag and she made smoke ringlets that got lost amongst the trees overhead. “How was your um… Day? Lecture? Office hours? You’re like a super smart, hot-shot, doctor-professor, right?”
Tumblr media
“Yeah, fake grass that’s usually on athletic fields. Though I heard recently that people were using it to decorate their backyards because it requires less maintenance.” Caitlin leaned back in the chair, her eyes dancing between the pink hair framed by grass and then over to the pool, contemplating if she wanted to take a swim at all today. It was a nice day, after all, and if they had a pool they should use it, right? She’d need to go shopping, though, she hadn’t thought to bring any swim wear. Not that she had much left anyway....
“Most people have a tendency to underestimate others...” The older woman glanced away as she said this, an almost far-off tone to her voice. She drew her attention back to the younger woman just in time to see her wince. She wondered what was bugging Jude, but if the girl didn’t offer up any words, Caitlin wouldn’t ask. “The suburbs are definitely a far cry from what most of us are used to, I’m sure.” She eyed the girl at the inflection to the word ‘free’. What would she have found if this girl was a body on her examination table? What stories formed who she was and made her put such an inflection into the word? It could range from what Caitlin had experienced to something vastly different with no real way to gauge it without asking. Before she could, though, her ears caught the questions being spoken and she quirked an eyebrow at the words ‘hot-shot’.
“I quit smoking years ago. It does horrible things to your lungs.” She gave a slight shrug, “And I don’t know about hot shot. I think they meant for me to just be a standard college Professor and not be recognized or show off to the point that I would be...”

Jude stepped out into the backyard, squinting against the light. How long had she been holed up in her new room? Hours? Days? God fucking knew. The whole Witness Protection Program explanation from the government agent was still swarming in her head. It felt like she hadn’t even started processing it yet, but she was now apparently living in the nicest house she had ever seen, had a job and some sort of family. That word was fucking strange. Oksana had been the closest thing she ever had to a family, but she was more like mentor than a parent. Jude didn’t know much but she was pretty sure parents didn’t just stab their kids with icepicks when they misbehaved. Maybe it was just Oksana’s very Russian self. The scar from that was kinda cute on Jude’s arm, shaped like a saxophone.
The pink haired girl plopped down on the soft, well-kept grass and flopped down on her back, careful of the healing bullet holes in her hip and collarbone. She swiftly lit a cigarette and closed her eyes, drowning in the sounds of the birds, rustling wind and leaves. It was nice. Then there were footsteps approaching and Jude didn’t bother opening her eyes. “This grass is hella nice. You should try it out. Don’t bother figuring out if it’s real…” She tore out a few pieces lazily, letting them fall on her own face. “It is.”
Tumblr media
Catrina -- shit, Caitlin -- let out a breath as she stepped out of the car, relishing in the cool breeze that blew across her face as she did so. She should probably park in the garage, but she didn’t feel like going inside right now. She’d had her first partial day of work and seeing the name ‘Professor Caitlin Jones’ written on a plaque on her office door had almost been more than she could take. A Professor, that was the job they had chosen for her. She was no longer allowed to be a medical examiner, though she was still allowed to teach a medical class at least. So she’d spent six hours planning lessons and adjusting the syllabi left from the previous Professor.
Now she was home, though this place hardly felt like home to her. It was a far cry from the bustling streets of New York City and the people that inhabited it were not the familiar faces of loved ones... though only those that occupied the house knew that. She waved to one of their neighbors, out walking their dog, before she moved around to the side gate and unlatched it to head into the backyard. Laying there on the grass was a head of pink hair and Caitlin found herself drawn over to the woman. Jude, that’s what name the woman had been given. It took all Cait had not to sing ‘Hey Jude’ under her breath whenever she saw the woman but she knew that was in bad taste.
The words caught her off guard, and the sight of the grass blades tumbling past her face made the older woman freeze for a second. “Yeah... I figured they wouldn’t stick us with astroturf - it’s more expensive.” She moved over to a nearby lawn chair and seated herself, glancing over to the young girl on the ground. “Bored, I take it?”

Yeah, kind of. [Ivy nodded, setting the almost empty bowl on the counter for a moment. That was Caitlin, her new mother. It was still weird for her to have a mother she know nothing about after so many years of fending for herself on the streets since she was of age. It was no different from all those times she was assigned to a foster home for so many years, yet it felt way different than that] I couldn’t sleep, I guess. [Ivy picked up her bowl in her hands] Everything good…? [She paused, not sure what to call her. Calling her mom when no one was around still seemed like getting too personal]
Tumblr media
[Caitlin’s eye searched the young girl’s face as she spoke. Unlike other girls that age that Caitlin had met - or even the ones she had examined post mortem - Ivy seemed more aged. An older soul stuck in a younger body, with a heftier past than most. She was supposed to be this girl’s mom, yet she’d been told she couldn’t ask about the past. Where did that leave them? She gave a small shrug at her ‘daughters’ question.] Yeah, it’s the same for me. A little weird sleeping next to a stranger that’s supposed to be my wife.
Tumblr media
[She reached a hand up to tuck some of her own hair behind her ear.] Is your room okay for you? I noticed they decorated everything the barest possible.

[Being moved to a house with a bunch of strangers was something Ivy was expecting, but pretending they were all part of the same family? Well, that wasn’t something she was counting on. Pretending she was the only daughter to two women, a cousin to a stranger and a niece to an old man wasn’t something she was either enjoying or hating. They were just there, they barely spoke with each other and Ivy was okay with it, if she had to be honest.
The only good thing there was about all of it was that she finally got to sleep in a bed instead of her car, and she could finally say she was waking up to something that was at least apparently good. She didn’t know for how long would that last before she had to leave the house or anything but she was going to make the most of it.
Ivy walked downstairs to pick up something to eat at 3AM. She wasn’t still used to sleeping in a bed so she was having trouble sleeping… and the thoughts of the murder she witnessed weren’t helping either. She grabbed a bowl and poured some milk on it before adding cereals to it, sitting on the counter and eating them in silence. She didn’t notice someone entering the kitchen, and if she had knew someone else would be awake, she would have put on some damn pajama pants.]
Can’t sleep? [Ivy asked with her mouth full of cereals, not really sure of what to say to her new relative.] Or did you want a midnight snack too?
Tumblr media
[Caitlin had actually managed to get some sleep this evening, but it was short lived as a dream that had started out sweet had taken a dark turn and roused her with a start in a cold sweat. Glancing first to Laurie at the other side of the king sized bed, and then to the alarm clock whose red numbers angrily flashed ‘3:23′. With a sigh, she slipped from the bed and carefully slipped from their room to pad down the hall into the kitchen.
As she passed through the entryway, her eyes caught sight of one of the two young girls seated on the counter eating a bowl of... something. Her eyebrows rose at the sight but she made no comment as she moved over to the fridge to fetch out a bottle of water. With the fridge door closed, she leaned against it to eye the young girl. Ivy, she recalled. This girl was meant to be her daughter. How strange that sounded to Caitlin, that she suddenly had a 23 year old daughter when this time two years ago she had a spirited little 4 year old daughter. She took a deep breath as those thoughts were pushed away, replaced instead with her focus on the words from the girl.]
Something like that. [Caitlin sipped from the water.] ... You okay?

[This entire area is completely different than anything she’s used to. Theresa – er… Laurie as her new name is supposed to be engraved her in her head– just looks completely confused about this entire place. She’s supposed to be happy that she’s in a safe environment away from everything in California, but it honestly just makes her feel a bit uncomfortable.] Oh. [She looks over at the other woman– who’s supposed to be her wife– and just smiles, moving to take the donut package and smiles at the woman across from her.] Thank you. You definitely didn’t have to do that. I appreciate it though. I was thinking about making up some food for dinner. Have anything you love specifically?
Tumblr media
[Even though she’d been in Georgia and settling into this home for a few days, Cait still hadn’t acclimated to the fact that she was now married for a second time in her life. Though this one was more of a ‘say you’re married’ than actually being married, she still couldn’t help but to nitpick at all the differences between this wife and her last. Laurie was pretty, and it was obvious she wanted this to work as much as they all did but... they all had their pasts - which they weren’t supposed to talk about - and Caitlin didn’t trust her one bit. This was not the woman she had chosen for a wife, this was a woman assigned to be her wife. Caitlin could just imagine Trix looking down from Heaven with disdain that she was sharing a bed with another woman. Perhaps that was part of the reason she’d spent most of her nights laying awake...]
Tumblr media
It was no problem. I figured everyone was hungry and we’re getting low on the initial food they supplied us. [Watching as the brunette tore open the donut package, Caitlin let out a breath and moved to take care of the food she’d bought.] Anything’s fine by me, honestly. [There was a part of her that wanted to connect with this woman, to let her guard down enough to make this whole experience easier but she couldn’t, not yet.]

F2F || Caitlin & Laurie
[Sleep is not something that has come easy to Cait ever since the incident. As a result, she often finds herself awake earlier than anyone she knows. This warm Tuesday morning finds her taking a long walk through the neighborhood and surrounding areas just as dawn breaks.
She is out of the house for a few hours and when she returns, shopping bags in hand, she heads into the kitchen with the expectation of finding it empty. Instead, she is surprised to see one of her new ‘family’ members already awake as well.
After an awkward moment of silence wherein she sets the bags on the counter, Caitlin speaks in her usual tone which gives little emotional or energy behind her words.]
Tumblr media
... I picked up some of those packaged little donuts from that convenience store down the road if you’re hungry.

[Caitlin’s Journal; June 11, 2018]
[Scrawled into a notebook that she keeps locked in the top drawer of her nightstand. There are entries dating back as far back as six months ago. Many pages, including this one, have tear stains on them.]
Hello baby girl,
I have officially arrived in Georgia. It’s... quaint. You would have loved the backyard on this house - we have a pool and a beautiful view of trees! Our neighbors are nice, too. They brought us a casserole. I took it with a smile even though in the back of my head I could hear your Mama muttering about how tired of casseroles she is. She’d like the cake though - a Hummingbird cake. Her favorite, and that gripped my heart so fiercely...
Listen to me prattling on. You don’t want to hear about that. No, you’d much rather know about my new ‘family’. I don’t know them well yet, nor do I really want to, but... I don’t have much of a choice if I want to keep my life. You know I’m only living so that I can eventually get revenge, right baby girl? Mommy wants nothing more than to be there with you and Mama but... putting that bastard in jail wasn’t enough. I need to make sure he suffers and then I can join you guys.
To do that, I have to bide my time here with these people playing happy family. We were put into pre-chosen roles and surprise, surprise they made me have a wife ... and a daughter. She’s 23, an age you’ll never get to see, but she seems to be every bit as interesting as I imagine you would be.
No matter how interesting she is, though, she’ll never be you. She’ll never be my little Theo....
