Sometimes you find a wild yarrow while weeding and you dig it up and befriend it.... my coworker was trying to tell me yarrow is related to poison hemlock and I was like no... no look closely at the flower structure you fool. That's classic asteraceae flower structure THE BRACTS LOOK FOR THE BRACTS but I could not convince him anyway it's asteraceae of course. I diagnose him with friend

Ah you're right. It is a Heurnia. They're just closely related genera.

Plant haul of the day. I'm fairly impressed with this honestly. I love visiting little family owned places with eclectic selections most of all because there is just so much joy in these wee little bastards.
The heurnia are not plants you see often locally! I got the lifesaver one in bloom and one labelled "black" which has some buds. Also a very fuzzy NOID cactus (opuntia?). Two senecio another place and a very large Lana begonia at a farmer's market

People will say “I don’t dream of labor” like that is nice but I just want to shelve books and generate curricula for information access and youth literacy and just because I am opposed to the fact that labor is an obligation to survival under capitalism does not mean that I don’t aspire to labor for the benefit and maintenance of society. I dream of labor that is meaningful and life-giving to my community. I know capitalist alienation has convinced you that existence is ineffectual but it’s not a revolutionary belief. It’s an outgrowth of individualism.

Well, i know the one with the strange bloom to be an Orbea. Couldnt tell from your description if you knew this already, so I'm putting it out there, since i love Orbea plants.

Honestly this is what I love abput this generation. The fundamental rework to information organization that the internet has allowed us.
who wants to found a startup publishing company with me where we use an ao3 tagging system for all books so people can actually find what they want

An older gentleman came into the nature center and asked me a bunch of questions about tarantulas. Then he pulled out his phone and showed me a picture.
“My son is a DNR officer in Arizona,” he said. “He found this tarantula with a tail in his house. Do you know what species it is?”
I looked at the photo, but from six feet away it was difficult to understand what I was seeing. I had him send it to the official park email so that I could take another look at it. Here is my reply:
Upon closer examination, it appears that this is not a tarantula at all. I was happily able to identify it as Manumala noxhydria during the parasitic secondary stage of its lifecycle. It was probably wandering into your son’s house in search of a suitable host. Use caution when approaching. They are considered an invasive species in all parts of the world and are capable of spraying a paralytic chemical into the face of predators and potential hosts. Careful destruction is recommended. For more information regarding pest control, contact species expert Ellen Ripley.
